Waukee’s newest garages are getting taller and cleaner, and European-marque specialty owners are asking better questions when they shop a car lift. But the model-number game — the way manufacturers name their lifts — still trips up more buyers than any other single factor. We spend more time than we’d like translating spec sheets for Waukee owners who came in with a printout from another dealer’s website and a story about why one model is “just like” another. Usually it isn’t. This is the myth-busting piece that decodes the model-number system and shows what actually matters for seasonal storage of a European coupe or roadster.

The model-number myth that costs European owners money

Every car lift manufacturer names their models with a mix of letters and numbers — SPOA10, SPO12, HD-9, TD6, CL10, and so on. Buyers assume the number is capacity in thousands of pounds and the letters describe some feature. Sometimes that’s true. Often it isn’t. A Rotary SPO12 is a 12,000 lb symmetrical two-post overhead car lift, but a BendPak HD-9 is 9,000 lb and drive-on. There’s no universal decoder ring. Owners who assume there is end up comparing apples to escargot.

The costly mistake is assuming two models with similar numbers are similar in real dimensions. A Rotary two-post at 10K has a completely different column footprint, arm swing, and ceiling requirement than a BendPak four-post at 10K. Both say “10” in the name, but they solve different problems and cost different money. A European specialty owner in Waukee comparing brochures side by side, without translation, will end up spending on a car lift that doesn’t fit the actual garage or the actual storage plan.

Why spec sheets don’t tell the whole story

Brochure spec sheets list rated capacity, rise time, motor voltage, and overall height. They rarely list the numbers that matter to a Waukee storage buyer: minimum ceiling under a fully lifted vehicle, drive-through width between columns, runway length, chock accommodation, low-profile ramp availability, and caster-kit compatibility. Those are all in the install manual, not the marketing sheet. We pull the install manual for every model we quote, and we send it to the buyer before they commit.

The other missing piece is stock-photo geometry. Marketing photos show the car lift in a bare warehouse with 20-foot ceilings and no walls. Your Waukee garage has a header at 9 feet, a side wall three feet from the intended column, and a workbench across the back. All those pinch points constrain what will fit. Spec sheets never draw your garage; only a site visit does.

Two-post model comparison — SPO12 vs SPOA10 vs equivalents

Since some Waukee owners still want a two-post car lift for occasional service work in addition to storage, here’s the honest comparison. Rotary SPO12 is a 12,000 lb symmetric overhead two-post. SPOA10 is a 10,000 lb asymmetric. Challenger CL10 is a 10,000 lb symmetric. Challenger CL12 is a 12,000 lb version. For a European coupe or roadster at 3,500 to 4,000 lb, all four have plenty of capacity. The difference is the arm swing and the overhead crossbar height.

SPO12 has longer arms and a taller crossbar — needs 12 feet 6 inches of ceiling minimum. SPOA10 fits 11 feet 6 inches. CL10 splits the middle. For a Waukee garage with 12-foot ceilings, SPOA10 is the sweet spot. It reaches every European pinch weld we’ve seen — Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, older Saab — without over-stretching the arms. When a Waukee owner comes in wanting SPO12 because “12 sounds better than 10,” we ask about the ceiling and usually walk them back to SPOA10.

Four-post comparison for seasonal storage

For a storage-first buyer — which most Waukee European owners are — the four-post car lift is the right tool. Model comparison: BendPak HD-9 is 9,000 lb, 165-inch runway. Atlas Garage Pro 9000 is comparable. Rotary and Challenger offer their own drive-on models at similar capacity. Runway length matters if the stored vehicle is longer than 15 feet. A 356 fits any of them. A modern S-Class Mercedes doesn’t fit some of the shorter runways.

The model to watch is whichever one has certified caster-kit compatibility. Waukee garages get rearranged. Owners want to roll the car lift out in summer and roll it back for winter. Not every four-post has a factory caster kit. BendPak and Atlas both offer them; some off-brand lifts don’t, and adding aftermarket casters voids the manufacturer warranty. Read the model designation carefully — the suffix -CK or the accessory catalog will tell you.

Low-clearance sports cars and drive-on ramps

European sports cars from the 90s forward tend to have low front air dams that don’t clear a standard drive-on ramp. A stock BendPak HD-9 ramp has a 12-degree approach angle. That’s fine for a 356 or an M3, marginal for a lowered 911, and a hard no for a 991 GT3 or a McLaren. Low-profile ramp accessories exist and drop the approach angle to about 7 degrees. If the Waukee owner’s storage vehicle is anything lower than stock, order the low-profile ramps at the same time as the car lift.

Model number matters here too. Not every four-post has a low-profile ramp option available. Before you commit, verify the ramp accessory part number exists in the manufacturer catalog for that specific model. We do this verification on every quote. Waukee owners who skip it and drop off their car lift purchase decision to a builder without the check-in end up with a lift that won’t accept the vehicle they bought it for.

The Waukee garage template we see all the time

The typical Waukee garage we see for a European specialty owner is a three-car detached with 12 to 13 foot ceilings, a 9-foot overhead door, a 200-amp sub-panel, and a heated slab. The owner has one or two collector cars and one daily driver. Storage happens November through April. The car lift lives in the third bay. The typical spec that fits is a BendPak HD-9 or Atlas equivalent four-post with a caster kit and low-profile ramps.

Install for that template runs mid four figures with delivery, unloading, assembly, and anchor-bolting. Add the caster kit and the low-profile ramps and you’re in the high four figures. That’s the number we quote most often. Owners who came in expecting to spend twice that on a name-brand two-post usually leave happy that the storage-first answer is simpler and cheaper than the shop-forum told them.

What we recommend after decoding the specs

For a Waukee European specialty owner buying a car lift primarily for seasonal storage, our answer is almost always a four-post drive-on model in the 9K to 10K range, with the caster kit and low-profile ramp accessories ordered at the same time. Two-post lifts have their place, but they aren’t the right storage tool for a low-profile European coupe or roadster spending four months in the air.
