An east-central Iowa dealership service manager called us in July about a car lift specifically for seasonal storage — the dealership takes about twelve trade-in vehicles a season that sit in inventory over winter and needs a way to store them stacked in the service building rather than leaving them exposed on the back lot. This is a different problem from a general shop lift, and the solution is spec-driven in ways that most dealer sales reps do not walk through. This is a technical deep-dive with real dimensions and model comparisons for the service manager who wants to spec the right car lift for stack storage without stealing floor space from the live service bays.

Model Number Decoding: The Suffixes That Matter

A dealership storage lift is a four-post car lift with three specific attributes: extended height, wide deck, and long deck. The base models we recommend are the Rotary AR9, Challenger CL4P9, and BendPak HD-9 — but every one of those has multiple suffixes that change the actual dimensions dramatically. Rotary AR9 is 84 inches lifting height standard, 88 inches on the extended, and 96 on the extra-extended. Challenger CL4P9X is the extra-tall variant. BendPak HD-9XW is the extra-wide and long variant.

For a dealership storing a mix of vehicles — sedans, small SUVs, and the occasional light pickup — you want the wide-and-long deck (accommodates track widths up to about 71 inches) and the extended-height lift (about 84 to 88 inches to top of deck). The extra-extended-height variants (96 inches) only make sense if you have 15-foot ceilings and you are stacking a truck on the top deck. Most east-central Iowa dealership service buildings are 14-foot ceilings, which caps you at about 88 inches lift height plus a 60-inch sedan roof plus 14-inch deck thickness — total about 162 inches or 13.5 feet. That fits, but only barely. Get the ceiling number right first, then choose the suffix.

Deck Dimensions: What Fits Where

Rotary AR9 standard deck is 174 inches long by 82 inches wide overall. Challenger CL4P9X extra-wide is 200 inches by 100 inches. BendPak HD-9XW is 218 inches by 100 inches. Those are meaningful differences. A 174-inch deck fits a sedan and most small SUVs comfortably; a 200-inch deck fits a full-size pickup with room to walk around it; a 218-inch deck fits a crew-cab long-bed with margin. If your seasonal storage inventory includes any long-wheelbase pickups or full-size SUVs, you cannot fit them safely on a 174-inch deck — the tires will hang off the ends of the runways.

For an east-central Iowa dealership with mixed trade-ins including F-150 and Silverado 1500 vehicles, we spec the 200-inch or 218-inch deck. The price difference between standard and long-deck variants is meaningful but not enormous, and the storage flexibility is worth it. This is exactly the spec decision that gets skipped when a dealership orders a lift from a distributor catalog: the deck length dictates what vehicles you can actually store, and undersizing the deck means half your winter storage inventory does not fit on the lift you just bought. Verify with your actual inventory mix, not with an assumed average.

Extended-Height Trade-Offs for Ceiling Fit

Extended-height four-post car lift variants are the specific SKU dealerships need for stack storage, but they come with two trade-offs worth knowing. First, extended-height lifts have slightly longer hydraulic cylinders and slightly more cable pay-out on each cycle, which means the drop cycle is about 15 to 20 seconds longer at full stroke. Not a big deal for storage where you cycle infrequently, but worth knowing.

Second, extended-height variants have a slightly higher center of gravity when the deck is loaded at full lift. In a poorly-shimmed install, that shows up as a wobble at the top of the cycle. We laser-shim every four-post install we do, but especially so on extended-height variants — the tolerance is about 1/16 inch across the column bases rather than the standard 1/8 inch. Ask your installer whether they laser-shim or just torque-shim; if they cannot answer the question, they probably do not. Storage inventory sitting at 88 inches for four months of a Midwest winter has to sit dead-square on the deck — there is no acceptable answer with a wobble.

Access Height for Getting a Vehicle Onto the Top

Storage stacking has a workflow problem nobody thinks about at spec time: how do you get the vehicle onto the top deck? On a fresh lift, you back the vehicle in, lift once, then park a second vehicle underneath. Simple. On a lift with a vehicle already parked underneath, you cannot lower the top vehicle to check tire pressure or move it without first moving the bottom vehicle out. That is fine for winter storage where nothing moves for four months, but it means your access to top-deck vehicles is essentially zero until spring.

Plan the stacking order accordingly. Top-deck vehicles should be the ones you expect not to touch until March. Bottom-deck vehicles are the ones you might sell mid-winter and pull out. A dealership service manager who spec’s a stacking lift without planning this workflow ends up moving vehicles constantly, which negates the storage benefit. Talk to us about deck accessories — specifically, drive-up ramps and safety-tail stops that keep top-deck vehicles secure — when you quote. A car lift built for storage has a specific accessory set, and getting it factory-installed is cheaper than adding it at year two.

Concrete Load and Anchor Detail for Extended-Height

Extended-height four-post lifts do not put more static load on the slab (rated capacity is the same 9,000 lb), but they do increase the moment load on the anchor bolts because the column is taller. Manufacturer specs require 4-1/4 inch of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, with the standard eight anchor bolts per column base at torque spec. On an east-central Iowa dealership building poured in the 1980s or 1990s, we usually see 4-inch slab in the service area — sometimes 5-inch. Verify with a test drill.

Anchor choice matters more than most sales reps mention. Wedge anchors are the manufacturer default and work fine on any modern, sound slab. Epoxy anchors are stronger and better for older slabs or slabs near joints, but require overnight cure time before torquing. On an extended-height install we recommend epoxy every time — the extra hold is worth the one-day delay in commissioning. This is a small line item on the install quote that most dealerships never see spelled out, but it is the difference between a lift that stays plumb for thirty years and one that starts to lean by year fifteen.

Long-Term Maintenance on a Low-Cycle Storage Lift

A storage car lift cycles maybe fifty times a year — twelve up in October, twelve down in April, and a handful of mid-winter cycles for the vehicles that get sold. That is dramatically less duty than a service-bay lift running fifteen cycles a day. The result is that everything except the hydraulic fluid lasts basically forever. Cables on a low-cycle storage lift are still tight and full-life at year twenty. Locks are pristine. Motors have a fraction of the wear.

The one thing that does degrade on a low-cycle lift is hydraulic fluid, because water condensation accumulates in the reservoir over the same twenty-year window whether the lift cycles or not. We change fluid on every dealership storage lift we service at the five-year and ten-year marks, and that is the single ongoing PM item that matters. Everything else — cable tension check, lock timing, anchor re-torque — still gets an annual look but rarely finds anything actionable.
