The Collector’s Ask and the Building
The collector’s building was a common Iowa spec: 30 wide by 40 deep, 12-foot side walls, four-inch slab, single overhead door on the short end. His collection was three vehicles rotating through a single space, and his ambition was to make the pole barn a real usable garage for the two vehicles that were not currently on the road. The number-one requirement was that a car lift for storage had to give him a clean tire rotation and wheel-work workflow on the underside vehicle without dropping the stored vehicle first. If he had to lower the top car to rotate tires on the bottom car, the lift was a failure.
Ceiling height was the constraint. A 12-foot wall gave him a working ceiling of about 132 inches under the trusses. That is enough for a standard nine-thousand-pound four-post to hold a stored sedan and give him roughly 60 inches of underside working clearance — enough to stand under, work on tires, and rotate wheels without stooping. It would not have been enough for a taller SUV overhead; taller stored vehicles push the working height under 48 inches and the whole workflow collapses.
Choosing the Lift — Brand and Model
For a home-storage collector build we default to BendPak or Atlas on the home-storage allowlist. Both hold their value on trade-in, both have a dense parts pipeline through our Ames warehouse, and both have common runway and column dimensions that a second owner can source parts for in ten years. We chose a nine-thousand-pound BendPak four-post car lift for storage with 173-inch runways, standard drive-through width, and lock latches every three inches. That lock spacing became critical the first month when he wanted the top vehicle at a specific height for cover clearance under a wall-mounted heater.
Brand history matters more than most collectors realize. BendPak has been shipping consumer-grade home lifts since the early 1990s, and their column and runway dimensions have stayed compatible across generations. A 2003 BendPak four-post can still get lock latches and cables through the current pipeline. That is not true for every brand — several off-brand imports from the late 2000s have dead parts pipelines today. When you buy for a decade of ownership on a numbers-matching muscle car sitting on the runways, you buy a brand with parts continuity.
Install Day and the No-Forklift Problem
The pole barn did not have a forklift and the customer did not want to rent one, so we routed the shipment to our Ames warehouse, broke the crate down, and delivered piece-by-piece on our own truck. That let us bring the lift in through the overhead door without needing a forklift on-site at all. Install ran seven hours for the four-post — a little longer than average because we shimmed two column feet to level the runway across an out-of-flat slab, and because we added a caster kit that lets him roll the lift five feet in either direction to reconfigure the bay for winter storage.
We handed him a printed maintenance log, the manual, the torque records, and a first-year checklist stapled to one column. Every install goes home with the same package. On a collector build the paperwork matters more because the lift itself becomes part of the collection story if it ever moves with the cars to a new garage. First-year callback rate on our home-storage installs runs under three percent, and when a callback does happen the parts pipeline is the difference between an afternoon fix and a two-week wait.
First Tire Rotation Under a Stored Vehicle
The first tire rotation on the underside vehicle came about six weeks after install. The collector raised the top car to the third-highest lock position, blocked the wheels of the stored vehicle, then rolled a floor jack under the lower car and lifted it by the frame at the standard rotation points. Total time from bay entry to bay exit was 45 minutes for a four-wheel rotation, which is on par with what a shop would do. The important thing is the top vehicle never came off the lift during the rotation.
That workflow proved out the whole design premise. If a car lift for storage forces the owner to drop the top vehicle to service the bottom vehicle, the storage utility disappears the first time he wants to rotate tires. The Parts Pipeline Test — A Six-Month Callback
Six months into ownership the collector called us with a lock latch that was slow to click on one column. It was a straightforward wear-in issue — the latch was fine, but the spring return had picked up a piece of grit during a garage cleaning and was catching. We shipped a replacement spring the same day from our Ames stock, and he installed it himself in twenty minutes with the phone on speaker. Total downtime on the lift: less than a day. Total cost: under fifty dollars in parts.
That is what the parts pipeline is supposed to look like on a home-storage brand. Off-brand lifts can turn the same issue into a two-month wait for a shipping-container replenishment at the importer, during which the collector cannot use his stored vehicle safely. What We Would Change After Year One
The one thing we would change on this build is drip tray coverage. We shipped four runway drip trays and the collector wanted to add a fifth center tray to catch any transmission or diff drip when he does fluid work on the underside vehicle. We recommend the center tray on any build where fluid service happens under a stored vehicle, and we now include it by default on collector installs. It is a small cost and it protects the finish of the parked car above from any surprise drip during a lower-vehicle service.
Everything else on the build has held up. The cables, cylinder, power unit, and lock latches on the four-post are all within spec at first-year inspection. The stored vehicle has moved off the lift twice in twelve months for a car show; the underside vehicle has been serviced eight times. Utilization has settled into exactly the pattern the collector planned for. On a car lift for storage that is what a successful first year looks like — quiet, boring, and predictable.
