A dealership service manager along the Iowa-Illinois corridor asked us to write up the symmetric versus asymmetric arm question for a car lift for storage that also runs daily tire rotation and wheel work through the same bay. This is normally a two-post question rather than a four-post question, but it matters even on a four-post storage setup where a rolling bridge jack has to pull wheels or where a satellite two-post shares the bay footprint. Symmetric Arms: What the Geometry Actually Is

Symmetric arms on a car lift for storage mean the four lift arms are all roughly equal in length, and the vehicle sits centered between the two columns. On a Rotary or Challenger symmetric two-post that shares a bay with a storage lift, the front and rear arms each reach about the same distance from the column. This positions the vehicle’s center of gravity exactly on the column centerline, which is the most stable loading condition possible for a two-post. Symmetric geometry is what we recommend when the primary vehicles are trucks, vans, and heavier SUVs, because it keeps the load evenly distributed. The tradeoff is that the driver has to walk around the columns to open the door once the vehicle is loaded, and door swing clearance is tight. For a dealership service department doing a mix of passenger cars and light trucks, symmetric is the safer geometry when the vehicle mix skews heavy.

Asymmetric Arms: Where the Load Sits

Asymmetric arms on a car lift for storage bay two-post are geometrically different: the front arms are shorter and the rear arms are longer, and the columns themselves are usually rotated about 30 degrees from square. The vehicle sits slightly rearward of the column centerline, which puts the driver’s door directly between the columns and gives easy in-and-out access with the vehicle on the ground. This is why asymmetric is the dominant geometry in dealership service departments where techs are getting in and out of vehicles all day. The tradeoff is that the vehicle’s center of gravity is not perfectly on the column line, so the load is not as balanced as symmetric. For passenger cars and light SUVs this is a non-issue. For heavy trucks it starts to matter. Most dealership service departments run asymmetric because their vehicle mix is predominantly passenger.

Real Arm-Length and Pad-Height Dimensions

On a symmetric two-post next to a car lift for storage, front and rear arms typically reach 36 to 46 inches at full extension, with the retracted minimum around 24 inches. Pad heights adjust from about 3.5 inches at the lowest setting to 5.5 inches at the highest, with a stackable adapter that adds another 3 inches for high-clearance vehicles. On an asymmetric two-post, front arms typically reach 25 to 32 inches at full extension, rear arms reach 38 to 50 inches, and pad heights are the same as symmetric. The specific numbers vary between Rotary and Challenger, and between capacity classes. On a 10,000 lb two-post, arm lengths are longer than on a 7,000 lb. Do not guess these numbers; the manufacturer publishes them and we send them.

Which One Fits a Storage-First Bay

For a bay whose primary role is a car lift for storage with an ancillary two-post for actual service, the geometry choice depends on how often the two-post gets used. If the two-post handles daily rotations and wheel work, asymmetric is more ergonomic for the tech. If the two-post is truly ancillary and mostly for occasional heavier service, symmetric is fine and slightly more stable. For dealerships along the corridor that do high daily volume, we recommend asymmetric on the two-post and a four-post extended-height for the storage function above. On the four-post storage lift itself, symmetric versus asymmetric does not apply the same way, because the runways carry the vehicle by the tires, not by lift arms. But the bay layout still matters: place the four-post so its columns do not interfere with the asymmetric two-post’s swing arcs.

Tire Rotation Ergonomics on Each Type

Tire rotation is where symmetric versus asymmetric shows up most day-to-day for a car lift for storage bay. On a symmetric two-post, the tech works from between the columns and reaches around them for the tires. On an asymmetric, the tech works with the driver door open and can pass tires between the columns without going around. On a four-post storage lift with a rolling bridge jack, tire rotation happens above the runways with the jack raising the wheels off the runway rails. That is a different ergonomic entirely and generally faster for a solo tech, but the four-post plus bridge jack is a heavier upfront investment. For a dealership service department doing hundreds of rotations a month, we usually see asymmetric two-posts in the working bays and four-post storage lifts in the overflow bays. That combo optimizes both throughput and storage capacity.

Wheel Alignment Impact and Rack Clearance

If a dealership does alignment work in the same footprint as a car lift for storage, the arm choice matters because alignment racks are wider than most vehicles. A symmetric two-post typically has enough side clearance to accept an alignment turntable at each front wheel. An asymmetric two-post has less side clearance because of the column rotation, and some alignment turntables interfere. On a four-post storage lift used for alignment (which is unusual but does happen), the runways need to be wider than standard, roughly 21 inches, and the front turnplate cutouts must be present at the factory. Retrofitting alignment cutouts into a runway is not a good idea and no manufacturer supports it. If alignment is on the service menu, spec the four-post with alignment cutouts at order time. We do this for a couple of dealerships along the corridor every year.
