If a lock skips, an arm restraint fails, or a cable is stretched past spec, wheel bearing work – with the wheel off, the caliper hanging, and the technician’s face inches from a spinning hub – is where the consequences become life-changing. The Wheel Bearing Job and Why the Car Lift Matters

When a tire and alignment tech pulls a rotor off a spindle to press a bearing, that vehicle needs to be dead-still, dead-safe, and at working height for at least 30 minutes. That is a longer stationary loaded window than nearly any other job in the shop, and it’s exactly where a marginal car lift will bite you. A slow drift because of a weeping cylinder seal, a click-and-release on a worn lock, a cable stretch that lets one side settle a quarter inch below the other – none of those matter on a quick tire rotation. They matter enormously on a bearing job.

Our east-central Iowa customer’s near-miss involved a competitor’s lift dropping about half an inch during a bearing press because the mechanical locks had never been engaged – the tech had left the lift on hydraulics only, which is illegal in most jurisdictions and unsafe everywhere. The car didn’t fall. But it moved, the tech felt it, and the lift immediately became his top priority. The lesson isn’t buy a different brand. The lesson is: every lift, of every brand, must be dropped onto mechanical locks before any technician goes underneath. That single habit is 90% of what separates a safe shop from a scary one.

Mechanical Locks – What They Are and How to Use Them

Every ALI-certified car lift on the market has mechanical safety locks that engage independent of hydraulic pressure. On a two-post, those are lock ladders on each post with a spring-loaded pawl. On a four-post, they’re mechanical latches or bar-through-hole systems on each column. Their job is to catch the lift if hydraulics fail. Their job is not to hold the lift at position during normal operation – that’s what oil pressure does. But the moment a technician goes under the car, the lift must be lowered onto those locks so oil pressure becomes irrelevant.

Every one of our new-lift customers gets a hands-on demo of lock engagement, and we ask them to demo it back before we sign the walkthrough sheet. It takes 15 seconds – raise past the desired working height, hold the release, lower slowly, feel the locks catch, listen for the click. Any lift that won’t lock at every position is not compliant and should not be used. The habit – always lock – is the single biggest safety upgrade any shop can make without spending a dollar. Skip it once, and eventually you’ll join the statistics.

Twenty-Year Ownership: What Actually Wears Out

A car lift used in a tire and alignment shop sees more cycles than a shop that does long service jobs – 15 to 30 up-and-downs per lift per day. That cycle count is what drives wear. Over 20 years, the components that need attention are, in rough order of appearance: hydraulic oil (change at year 5 and year 12), arm restraint locks (rebuild at year 7 to 10), cylinder seals (rebuild at year 12 to 15), cables on four-posts (replace at year 12 to 15), and eventually the cylinder itself (replace at year 18 to 25).

That’s the timeline for a well-maintained mainstream car lift. Cheap import lifts compress that timeline dramatically – we’ve replaced entire hydraulic power units on off-brand lifts inside seven years because the pump castings weren’t up to the cycle count. That’s why we recommend Rotary, Challenger, or BendPak for any shop expecting real duty. The initial premium is repaid many times over across 20 years in parts availability, cycle life, and resale value. Our east-central Iowa customer runs three Rotary two-posts and one Rotary scissor, and his oldest lift is 19 years old with only oil changes and one arm-restraint rebuild in its history. That is what durability looks like when the brand and the maintenance rhythm both do their jobs.

Alignment-Specific Requirements

Wheel alignment adds a whole layer of car lift requirements. You need turning plates at the front, slip plates at the rear, level runways that stay level under load, and enough scissor jack capacity to lift the axle for suspension work. That’s why alignment shops almost universally choose four-post car lifts with alignment-ready decks – not because two-posts can’t do alignment, but because they can’t do it accurately or fast.

Alignment decks come in two capacities in the Iowa market: 12,000 lb for passenger cars and light trucks, and 14,000 to 18,000 lb for dually pickups and heavier vans. Our east-central Iowa customer specced a 14,000 lb alignment lift because his shop touches quite a few dually diesels – the extra capacity gave him a comfortable margin. Add a pair of scissor bridge jacks and a set of alignment-quality turning plates and you have a bay that will pay itself off in a few years on alignment revenue alone. We can also retrofit alignment plates and jacks onto a plain four-post if you already own one – that’s a common upgrade path we handle. Wheel Bearing Job Positioning

Positioning a car on the car lift for a wheel bearing job is a small skill that separates senior techs from apprentices. On a two-post, arms should be under the manufacturer’s designated lift points – usually pinch welds or sub-frame pads – with adapters as needed. On a four-post with rolling jacks, the axle should be lifted just enough to unload the tire and let the wheel spin freely, but no more. Over-lifting the axle from a runway lift can strain suspension components you didn’t intend to service.

Once the vehicle is at working height, engage locks. Then pull the wheel, unbolt the caliper, hang it on a wire (never on the brake line), remove the rotor, and press the bearing. Bearing pressing generates real force – up to 20 tons on a heavy-duty bearing press – and that force has to be reacted somewhere. If the vehicle is on a hydraulic-only lift, that force can transmit through the suspension into the lift arms, which is uncomfortable at best and dangerous at worst. Mechanical locks eliminate the concern. This is the kind of detailed positioning knowledge that every senior tire tech has and every apprentice needs to learn on day one. Annual Inspection and What Inspectors Look For

An ALI-certified car lift inspector – and there aren’t many in Iowa, we’re one of the certified crews – checks a specific set of items at every annual: mechanical lock function at every position, hydraulic system pressure and leak check, cable condition and tension, arm restraint lock engagement, anchor bolt torque, structural weld inspection, and control-system function. We hand every customer a written inspection report with photos of anything requiring attention. That report is what your insurance carrier and OSHA compliance officer will ask to see if there’s ever an incident. Shops that skip inspections are shops that eventually get a call from their carrier declining a claim. Our east-central Iowa customer’s shop has passed ten consecutive annuals with zero corrective-actions – a track record possible only because he does small daily inspections between our annual visits. He walks the shop every Monday morning, cycles each lift empty, checks the locks by feel, wipes the columns, and looks for oil drips. Ten minutes per lift, once a week. That habit is why his 19-year-old lift still meets spec.

Building a Safety Culture, Not a Checklist

The final piece isn’t equipment – it’s culture. A shop that treats the car lift as a piece of dumb equipment eventually has an incident. A shop that treats it as a piece of critical safety infrastructure never does. The difference is small habits: locking every time, cycling weekly, wiping columns, replacing frayed cables before they fail, keeping the ALI decal current, and taking apprentices under the lift on day one to explain why every step matters.
