A car lift is the anchor of a tire and alignment shop, and the way you lay the bay out around it decides whether your techs finish a suspension job in an hour or three. This is a safety-first walkthrough for the tire-and-alignment shop owner who cares about doing the work right, keeping techs uninjured, and getting real throughput through a fixed floor plan. The differences between a good bay and a bad one are small, cheap, and worth naming.

Column Placement: Distance From Walls and Other Lifts

Every two-post lift manual specifies a minimum column-to-wall distance and a minimum column-to-column distance for adjacent lifts. Rotary spec is typically 24 inches minimum from column to wall, and about 12 feet between columns of adjacent lifts. In practice, we lay out an Urbandale tire shop with more like 36 to 48 inches column-to-wall so a tech can walk around the base with a wheel in hand, and 14 to 15 feet between adjacent lifts so two techs can work simultaneously without bumping arms or dropping wheels on each other.

The reason to give up floor space here is that tire and alignment work involves carrying loose wheels — sometimes four at a time on a rack. If a tech has to slalom between column bases and toolboxes with a wheel, one of two things happens: he moves slowly, or he moves fast and drops a wheel. Neither outcome pays the shop back. Every inch you steal at the column-wall margin costs you an inch of walking room on every single tire job. This is the number-one layout mistake we see in older Urbandale shops that were retrofitted for a car lift rather than designed around one.

Arm Reach and Low-Pad Clearance for Tire Work

Tire and alignment work needs a two-post with two specific arm attributes: short minimum reach (24 inches or less at the pad center) and low-drop pad clearance (three inches or less at the ground). A modern sedan’s factory jack points are close to the rocker — a symmetric older lift with a 30-inch minimum reach cannot get its pad under the pinch weld without you shoving the vehicle sideways or using a jack extension that lifts the pad off center. That is where alignment settings drift on a single job.

Every Rotary and Challenger commercial (PKS) two-post lift we install in an Urbandale tire shop is versymmetric or asymmetric with proper low-pad clearance and short arm reach. When we quote, we ask what your typical vehicle mix looks like — sedan-heavy, SUV-heavy, or pickup-heavy — and match the arm and pad package accordingly. Sedan-heavy shops get short-reach arms and low pads standard. Pickup-heavy shops get taller arms with drop-in extensions. Mix-heavy shops get the versymmetric platform that handles both. A car lift arm setup is not one-size-fits-all, and picking wrong costs you a minute per vehicle for the next fifteen years.

Alignment Bay: Turn Plates, Slip Plates, and Reference

If you are doing alignments in the same shop, the alignment bay is a separate car lift — usually a four-post 12K with factory turn plates at the front and slip plates at the rear. Do not try to run alignment off a two-post. It works, but the throughput drops by half and the accuracy tolerance is right at the edge of what a modern all-wheel-alignment machine can compensate for. If your shop books more than five alignments a week, dedicate a bay.

The alignment bay wants at minimum sixteen feet of clear floor length (to accommodate the vehicle plus the alignment console pull-out), and the four-post rack should sit square to the shop’s reference wall — not the outside building wall, which is often slightly off square. We lay a shop out with a laser reference from the reference wall, and shim the four-post columns to bring the deck level to within about 1/32 inch across the wheelbase. That is tighter than a two-post gets, and it is the tolerance that keeps the Hunter alignment machine reading true across every wheel-thrust cycle. Precision at install saves hours of alignment recalibration over the life of the lift.

Ceiling, Lighting, and Overhead Obstructions

Urbandale tire shops typically have 12- to 14-foot ceilings. A commercial two-post car lift stands about 11’6″ overall, so 12-foot ceilings clear but only barely, and any drop-down light fixture, HVAC duct, or overhead door track becomes an issue. We map the ceiling before we set columns — walking the bay with a laser and marking every obstacle. About one in three Urbandale shops we lay out has at least one light fixture that has to move before the lift goes in.

Lighting under a raised vehicle is the other safety-first consideration. Overhead shop lights aimed at the floor cast a shadow under a raised vehicle at chest height, right where the tech is working. Add per-bay LED task lights aimed at the underside of a lifted vehicle, or use a magnetic drop light on the frame. This is not glamorous work, but it is what separates a shop where techs see brake lines and shock bolts clearly from one where a stripped bolt costs an hour of shop time. Good under-lift lighting pays for itself in the first month.

Suspension and Shock Work: What the Lift Needs to Do

Suspension and shock replacement puts specific stress on a car lift. When you compress a spring on a strut assembly or break loose a suspension bolt with a breaker bar, the vehicle can twist slightly on the pads. If the lift’s arm restraints are worn or the ratchet mechanism is loose, the vehicle rotates. A well-maintained ALI Gold two-post catches that with a locked ratchet at the pin. A worn or cheap lift does not.

We service arm restraints as part of our annual PM check on every commercial lift we install. The ratchet teeth wear on the driver’s side more than the passenger side (because the driver-side arm gets swung further every cycle), so we swap or re-tension the driver-side restraint at about the eight-year mark on a typical Urbandale tire shop lift. It is a hundred-dollar part and thirty minutes of shop time, and it keeps the vehicle from ever twisting on the pads under a breaker bar. Ask about the annual PM service when you buy — we discount it heavily when it is scheduled as part of a service plan rather than a call after something wears.

Concrete, Anchors, and the ALI Listing

Every ALI Gold commercial two-post requires 4-1/4 inch of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and every column base gets anchored with either wedge anchors (torque-set) or epoxy anchors (poured into the drilled hole). We prefer epoxy anchors on any Urbandale shop with a slab older than fifteen years — they distribute load better across a slightly-fatigued slab and do not rely on wedge friction that can loosen over decades.

The listing side matters too. Every lift we install ships with an ALI Gold decal that goes on the driver’s column. That decal is what your insurance carrier looks at when they audit the shop, and it is what OSHA looks at if you ever have an incident. If the sticker is missing or aftermarket, the lift is treated as uncertified and any claim is fought. We hand every Urbandale customer the ALI listing paperwork on install day and file the registration for the annual inspection recommendation. Certification is not a hassle; it is what keeps the shop running when the paperwork side of things gets scrutinized. A car lift without a valid ALI listing is a liability, not an asset.

Ongoing PM and When to Call Us

That includes cable tension (four-post), fluid check, arm-restraint ratchet verification, safety-lock timing, anchor bolt re-torque, and a visual on the power unit for leaks. We build a PM schedule into every install quote and bill it monthly — it works out to less than a hundred dollars per lift per year across the shop, and it is the single best insurance premium you can pay.
