A tire-and-alignment shop puts more cycles on a car lift in a week than most repair bays do in a month, and every one of those cycles is another chance for an arm restraint to slip, a safety pawl to hang up, or a tech to skip a step because the day got busy. An Ankeny tire-and-alignment operator brought us in last year to do a safety walkthrough with his crew after he acquired the shop from a previous owner, and this article documents what we covered — from the daily pre-shift inspection through the once-a-quarter deep check. Daily pre-shift: the five-minute walkaround
Before the first car of the day goes up, we ask techs to spend five minutes walking each car lift in the shop. It is a boring five minutes and it will save an incident about once every eighteen months. The walkaround: eyeball the cables for fraying, listen for the safety-pawl click on a slow raise with no load, cycle the arm restraints by hand to feel for smooth engagement, check the hydraulic fluid level at the power unit, and sweep the anchor bolts for any visible movement or concrete chipping.
The Ankeny shop had inherited three lifts from the previous owner. On the first pre-shift walkaround with the new crew, we found one arm restraint that engaged but did not disengage cleanly — the pawl was sticking on a burr in the ratchet. Five minutes of file work and a shot of dry lube fixed it. If the tech had not caught it, the next raise would have gone up fine, and the load would have come down on a partially engaged restraint at the wrong moment. That is the incident we prevented, and it is why the five-minute walkaround is non-negotiable in a tire-shop workflow.
Loading position and the arm-swing dance
The most common source of arm-related incidents on a car lift is loading at the wrong position — arms swung too far inboard, pads set on a body panel instead of a factory pinch-weld, or a wheelbase mismatch that puts the vehicle center-of-gravity outside the arm sweep. A tire-shop tech doing 15 to 20 vehicles a day is exactly the person most likely to shortcut the load. Our safety walkthrough covers three loading rules that eliminate 90 percent of the risk.
Rule one: identify the factory lift points on the door jamb sticker or the shop manual before the wheels leave the floor. Rule two: place each pad by hand and confirm it is on structure, not sheet metal. Rule three: raise the lift only enough to take the vehicle weight off the tires, stop, and re-verify the pad position before continuing up. The Ankeny crew added a visual check at the 6-inch height as standard practice, and their manager mentioned it caught two mis-loaded vehicles in the first month of the new workflow. Six inches is far enough up to see the pad and far enough down to lower without incident if something looks wrong.
Arm restraints and safety-cam engagement
Every ALI-certified car lift has automatic arm restraints that engage as soon as the arms leave the floor, and mechanical safety pawls that lock the carriages at fixed positions on the columns. Both systems have to work every cycle, and both are wear items. The restraints are gear-and-pawl assemblies with a small return spring; the safety pawls are on the columns and engage against toothed racks. Neither has a long service history if abused, but both are cheap to replace when they wear.
The Ankeny walkthrough included a hands-on test of each system on all three lifts. Restraint test: raise arms two feet, try to swing an arm horizontally — it should not budge. Safety-pawl test: raise the carriages, release the hydraulic pressure, and listen for the pawl to hold the load with the pressure gone. Any hesitation, any drop, any groan — take the lift out of service and call us. On the middle lift we found a pawl that took a half-second longer than the other two to seat. Not urgent, but scheduled for a spring replacement. Same-day parts availability on those pawls made the fix trivial.
Cable inspection cadence for high-cycle shops
A tire-and-alignment shop cycling a car lift 60 or 80 times a week accelerates cable wear compared to a general repair bay. On our recommended inspection cadence — visual weekly, hands-on quarterly, professional annually — the Ankeny shop found no issues on the first quarterly check, and one broken strand in the equalizer cable on the second. We replaced the cable set the same week. Twelve months in, no further findings.
Broken cable strands are a canary — one strand today, five strands in six months if you ignore it. The cable is designed to fail visibly before it fails catastrophically, and every shop owner should know what a broken strand looks like: a small hooked wire poking out from the twisted bundle, usually near a pulley or the anchor point. If you see one, do not panic — the cable is not going to snap in the next raise — but do schedule the replacement inside 30 days. Waiting past that is where the risk lives.
Hydraulic fluid and power-unit hygiene
A tire-shop bay tends to be dirtier than the average bay — wheel-weight lead, tire dust, brake dust, and the occasional coolant spill all end up on the floor near the power unit. Any of that stuff finding its way into the hydraulic reservoir is a fast way to shorten seal life. Our walkthrough with the Ankeny crew covered fluid-check frequency (monthly minimum in a tire shop), the correct way to top off (through a clean funnel, from a sealed container, never from an open jug that has been sitting), and the annual full flush that should be scheduled around a slow week.
Fluid contamination shows up as cloudiness or a milky sheen on the dipstick. If the tech sees either, the fluid is compromised and needs to be changed, not topped off. The Ankeny lifts had all been well-maintained by the previous owner — no cloudiness, no unusual color — so we set the new crew’s baseline to weekly visual and annual full flush. Twelve months later, no cylinder issues. Fluid hygiene is unglamorous and it is the single highest-ROI safety habit in the shop.
Documentation, log books, and the annual inspection
Every commercial car lift in a shop that serves the public should have a written maintenance log kept at the machine. Not a computer file — a physical log book or a laminated sheet on the column. The log captures every cycle count reset, every fluid check, every restraint or cable finding, and every professional inspection. Insurance carriers ask about it. OSHA compliance officers ask about it. And, more practically, the log makes it obvious when something is trending in the wrong direction before it becomes urgent.
The Ankeny shop started fresh log books on all three lifts the day of our walkthrough. Twelve months in, the log has caught one trend — the middle lift’s fluid is showing a slightly faster cycle-to-cycle drop than the other two, suggesting an early rod-seal weep that we will address at the 18-month mark. Without the log, that trend would have been invisible until it became a leak. With the log, it is a scheduled maintenance item on the calendar.
Training the next tech
The final piece of the walkthrough is what happens when a new tech joins the shop. The Ankeny owner asked us to write a one-page onboarding sheet that any new hire could read through in ten minutes and sign as acknowledgment. We drafted it with him: five daily checks, three loading rules, two weekly checks, one monthly, and the phone number to call if anything looks off. Simple, laminated, on the wall next to each lift.
