An EV specialty shop opened up in Marion two years ago and their car lift purchase almost went sideways because of five myths that keep circulating in EV forums and Facebook groups. The owner had specced a general-service 10,000 lb 2-post for tire rotation and wheel work because “EVs are just heavy versions of gas cars.” That is not quite right. We are Auto Lift Services, and this piece is the myth-busting conversation we had with the shop, laid out with the actual model numbers and specs so you can decide for your own EV business. The right car lift matters more with battery vehicles than with any prior generation.

Myth One: Any 10K Lift Handles an EV
A Tesla Model Y Long Range weighs about 4,555 lb curb. A Model X Plaid is 5,390 lb. A Rivian R1T comes in at 7,050 lb. A Hummer EV is over 9,000 lb before payload. “Any 10K lift” is fine for the Y and X but starts to get uncomfortable on the Rivian and is unsafe on the Hummer. The safety margin the industry recommends is that the lift capacity should be at least 20% above the loaded vehicle weight, which for the Hummer means a 12K or 15K lift, not a 10K.
The Marion shop’s initial 10K spec would have covered 80% of the vehicles walking in the door but would have refused the other 20% — including the shop’s showcase Rivian tire package customers. We swapped the spec to a Rotary SPO12 (12,000 lb, still asymmetric 2-post), which handled every EV in Marion’s service list including the R1S. The car lift capacity rating is not marketing; treat it as engineered.
Myth Two: EV Pick Points Are the Same as Gas Cars
Nope. Tesla and Rivian both publish factory-approved pick-point diagrams that are different from the pinch-weld or frame-rail points on a gas car. Miss the spec and you can crush a coolant line for the battery pack, deform the aluminum lower control arm mount, or worst case put a load into the battery structural case itself. Every EV service shop should have laminated pick-point diagrams for the top 15 models they see, posted at the lift.
The lift arms need pad adapters tall enough to reach the specified pick point without touching adjacent components. For Model Y, that means the mid-rise polyurethane pads plus a 4-inch tall adapter. For Rivian, the factory spec is a puck at a specific point that requires a shorter, precision adapter. Myth Three: Tire Rotation Does Not Stress the Lift
Tire rotation is one of the highest-cycle jobs a shop runs. A tire rotation and set of four wheel weights takes 15 to 25 minutes with a good tech. That is 20 lifts per bay per day on a busy tire schedule. Over 20 years that is roughly 100,000 cycles per bay — five times the lifetime cycles of a repair shop that mostly does brakes and diagnostic work.
An EV specialty shop that does tire service exclusively (which is common for Tesla-focused tire shops) needs commercial-duty lifts, not a repurposed home model. The Rotary SPO12 and Challenger CL12 platforms are engineered for that duty cycle. A cheap import at half the price is designed for 8,000 to 10,000 cycles before major overhaul. The Marion shop’s Rotary is expected to hit year 15 before the first power-unit rebuild, and that is with heavy tire work every day. That is what the right car lift buys you.
Myth Four: Wheel Alignment Needs a Different Lift Entirely
Only for high-volume alignment work. If the shop is doing 6 to 10 alignments a week, a 2-post with a proper alignment package (turn plates on the arms, slip plates at the rear) will handle it. If the shop is doing 40 alignments a week, a dedicated 4-post alignment lift is the right call because setup is faster and repeatability is better.
Marion runs 12 to 15 alignments a week (many EVs pull their alignment out of spec after the first pothole because of the added weight and torque). We recommended keeping the 2-post as the primary and adding a scissor alignment lift as a second bay for dedicated alignment work. That let the shop keep tire rotations flowing on the 2-post while the alignment tech worked the scissor without cross-blocking. Two bays for two workflows is more productive than trying to make one car lift do both.
Myth Five: Battery Access Requires Ground-Up Lifting
Battery pack service (drops, swaps, thermal management repairs) does need dedicated equipment — a battery table or transmission-style pack cradle — but the lift itself does not have to change. A standard commercial 2-post car lift at full height gives you 6 feet of underbody clearance, which is enough to slide a battery table in and roll the pack out. Some shops build custom low-rise scissor tables for pack drops; those are a nice-to-have, not a must-have.
What matters more is anchoring. Battery packs on a Model S or Y run 1,000 to 1,300 lb. When the pack drops onto the table, load transfers off the lift and onto the floor. When the pack goes back up, the lift takes it plus the vehicle plus the table. Sizing the lift for peak load (vehicle + pack + table + tooling) is what keeps the safety margins where they belong. The Marion shop’s 12K handles this easily. A borderline 10K would not.
Myth Six: The Motor and Hydraulics Are the Same as 10 Years Ago
The pump and cylinder architecture on a modern Rotary or Challenger is very close to the 2015 model, and the seal materials and cylinder machining have improved but the fundamentals are steady. The bigger change is in the safety-latch mechanisms, the automatic arm restraints, and the electronic monitoring. The Rotary SPO12 we sold Marion has automatic arm-restraint locks that engage when the arms extend, versus manual latches on the older 2015-generation lifts. That saves the tech a step every cycle.
The other change is fluid recommendations. Modern hydraulic power units run better on AW32 anti-wear fluid than on the Dexron transmission fluid many older lifts used. If you inherit a used car lift from 2005, plan on flushing the reservoir and swapping to AW32 as part of your first service. Fresh fluid, fresh filter, and a working duty cycle are 80% of what makes a lift feel new.
What the Marion Shop Actually Bought
Final config: two Rotary SPO12 asymmetric 2-post lifts, 12,000 lb rated, tall 12-foot columns for headroom over Rivians, EV pad-adapter kit on each, ALI certified. One scissor alignment lift as bay three. Total install took our crew two days across both bays. The shop was running paid work on day four.
