Buying a car lift is the easy part. Living with one for a year — parking a restored coupe on the top deck all winter, dropping an oil pan on a daily driver underneath, and figuring out when those four lifting cables actually need attention — that is where most collectors learn what they wish they had known on day one. We install and service lifts across Iowa from our base in Ames, and a good share of our residential work sits in the southeast corner of the state, in pole buildings and converted machine sheds between the river towns and the farm ground. This article walks through one collector’s first twelve months of ownership, from concrete questions before the truck arrived through the first honest cable inspection.

The Pole Building That Started It

The owner reached out in early spring with a description we hear constantly: a 30×40 pole building, poured concrete floors, roughly twelve-foot sidewalls, and a growing collection that had outrun the driveway. He wanted to store one vehicle up high and keep another usable underneath, and he wanted to be able to do his own maintenance instead of hauling everything to town. Nothing in that list is unusual. What made the conversation productive was that he asked about the floor before he asked about the price.

Twelve-foot sidewalls sound generous until you stack the math. A mid-size sedan is roughly 57 inches tall. Add the deck height of the runways when the unit is fully raised, add the vehicle sitting underneath, and add a few inches of honest clearance so nobody scrapes a roof rack. On a nominal twelve-foot wall with trusses eating into the corners, you generally end up wanting a storage-height four-post rather than a tall service model. We measured to the lowest obstruction — a light fixture, not the truss — and sized from there. That single measurement changed the model recommendation and saved a return trip. Anyone shopping for a lift in a farm building should start with a tape measure and a flashlight, not a catalog.

Concrete, Anchors, and Why We Ask Twice

Pole building slabs are a mixed bag. Some are beautifully poured six-inch pads with fiber and rebar. Others are four inches of whatever the crew had left over, floated on a wet fall day, with a control joint running exactly where you want a post. Before we schedule an install, we ask about slab thickness, age, and reinforcement, and if the owner is not sure, we core-test or at minimum drill a test hole in an inconspicuous spot. On this southeast Iowa job the slab came back a genuine five inches, cured for years, with no visible cracking under the intended footprint.

Four-post units are more forgiving than two-post units because the load spreads across four base plates rather than concentrating into two columns fighting an overturning moment. That does not mean anchoring is optional. We still anchor, still torque to spec, and still verify that the runways sit level within manufacturer tolerance across the length and the width. A lift that is off by a quarter inch front to rear will slide a vehicle imperceptibly toward the low end every time you lower it, and after a hundred cycles you will notice your tire stops are doing more work than they should. Getting a car lift level at install is cheaper than chasing symptoms later.

First Real Job: An Oil Pan Gasket

The first meaningful use came about six weeks in — a weeping oil pan gasket on a sedan that had been marking territory on the shop floor. This is the job that sells people on ownership. On jack stands it is a miserable afternoon of scooting on cardboard, fighting bolt access, and dropping the crossmember hardware into your own eye. At working height it becomes an ordinary two-hour repair with real tool clearance and real light.

A four-post does introduce one wrinkle for pan work: the runways sit under the tires, so suspension stays loaded and the pan is bounded by whatever is above it. The owner bought a rolling bridge jack, which is the accessory we recommend to almost every four-post buyer. It lets you pick the vehicle up off the runways by the frame or the pinch welds, unload the suspension, and get a wheel off without moving anything. For the pan job, the bridge jack supported the engine cradle while the mounts came loose. We also talked through drip trays. Collectors tend to store one vehicle above another, and a leaking transmission on the top deck will ruin the paint on the car below faster than any hailstorm. Trays are inexpensive insurance and take ten minutes to drop into the runways.

How Cables Actually Wear on a Car Lift

Every four-post equalizer cable system works the same way in principle: a set of steel cables runs over sheaves at the tops of the columns and ties the four corners together so the runways rise evenly while a single hydraulic cylinder does the lifting. The cables are not usually the primary load-bearing element in the way people assume, but they absolutely control level, and a failed cable means an unlevel deck with a vehicle on it. That is why inspection matters more than most owners realize.

Wear shows up in predictable places. Look where the cable crosses a sheave, because that is where it flexes and where individual wires break first. Look at the swaged fittings and the threaded ends at the anchor points for corrosion or elongation. Look for birdcaging, where the strands separate and the cable looks visibly fatter in one spot. And run your gloved hand slowly along the length — you will feel a broken wire before you see it. Industry guidance is straightforward: replace a cable if you find broken wires in the strands, obvious kinking, corrosion pitting, or any flat spot from riding a misaligned sheave. Never replace one cable by itself. Replace the set, because a new cable next to three stretched ones fights you every cycle and you will be re-leveling the deck forever.

Inspection Intervals That Make Sense for Home Use

Commercial shops running a lift twenty times a day should be on the ANSI-referenced annual inspection schedule at minimum, with daily visual checks by the operator. Home and collector use is lower cycle count, but the failure modes are different, not absent. An unheated Iowa pole building swings from ninety-five and humid in July to below zero in January, and condensation cycles are hard on steel cable and harder on the sheave bearings.

Here is the schedule we give collectors. Monthly: a two-minute walk-around. Cycle it empty, listen for a sheave that squeals or clunks, and eyeball the cable runs. Every six months: lubricate the sheaves and cables with a penetrating cable lubricant, not chassis grease, and check that all four corners lock into the same safety notch at the same time. Annually: a full inspection with the cables wiped clean, plus a look at hydraulic hose fittings, the cylinder rod for scoring, and the anchor bolt torque. If the unit spends most of the year holding a stored vehicle at full height without moving, add one item — cycle it fully up and down at least monthly anyway, because cable sitting motionless under tension in one spot develops a set. Realistically, most collector cables go seven to ten years. Cheap cables in a damp building go a lot less.

What the First Year Actually Cost Him

We do not quote hard numbers in an article because freight, slab work, and accessory choices swing the total more than the unit price does. But we can lay out the tiers honestly. The equipment itself is the largest single line, and a quality 8,000 to 9,000 pound four-post from a name we actually stock parts for lands well above the import specials you find on marketplace listings. Professional installation is a modest fraction of that number if the slab is ready and the building has power where you need it.

The accessories are where budgets drift. Caster kits, drip trays, a rolling bridge jack, an approach ramp extension, and a jack tray each add a slice, and most owners want at least two of them within the first year. Then there is the electrical: many residential units run on 110V single phase, which is convenient, but if your building only has a couple of circuits fed from the house you may need a subpanel or a dedicated run. Budget for an electrician even if you think you will not need one. Over the full first year, this owner spent roughly a third again on top of the equipment price once install, accessories, and a dedicated circuit were counted. He also spent nothing on repairs, which is what happens when the install is done right and the maintenance is not skipped. Buying Smart the Second Time Around

The collector we worked with is already talking about a second unit for the other bay, and the questions he asks now are completely different from the ones he asked two years ago. He no longer asks what capacity number is printed on the placard. He asks what the sheave bearings are, whether the cables are commercially available or proprietary, and how fast we can get a hydraulic cylinder if one starts weeping. Those are the right questions.

We get calls constantly from people who bought an off-brand unit from a marketplace ad, cannot identify the manufacturer, and now have a vehicle stuck in the air on a leaking cylinder. One recent caller from out of state described his equipment only as “four post, seven thousand pound, black” — no model, no data plate, no manual. There is no parts book for black. That is the real hidden cost of buying the cheapest thing available. Stick with brands whose parts we can put in a box the same week: Rotary and Challenger on the commercial side, BendPak and Atlas for home and collector garages. And when it comes time to replace worn cables, order the correct set for your specific model rather than a generic length.
