A car restoration shop owner in Cedar Falls asked us the question every first-time buyer asks eventually: how do I get this thing from the freight truck into my bay without a forklift? His shop does CV axle and half-shaft work on classic and modified cars, needed a new car lift, and had no dock, no forklift, and a gravel driveway leading to the shop door. That combination stops a lot of DIY freight plans cold. What Actually Ships When You Buy a Car Lift

Before you can plan freight, you need to know what shows up. A typical two-post car lift arrives as three or four crates: one long crate holding both columns (12 to 14 feet long), one heavy crate holding the hydraulic power unit and cylinders (~400 lb), one crate holding arms and hardware, and sometimes a fourth crate with runways or accessories. Total shipment weight is 1,600 to 2,200 lb depending on brand and capacity. A four-post lift ships slightly differently: two crates of runways plus a post crate and a hardware crate.

Everything ships LTL – less than truckload – on a common carrier truck. LTL trucks don’t have residential lift gates by default; you have to specifically request one, and it adds a fee. Curbside delivery is the standard; getting the crates into the shop is on the buyer unless you’ve contracted with an installer (like us) who handles freight logistics as part of the install package. Knowing what’s coming – dimensions, weight, and crate count – lets you plan the unloading step in advance instead of scrambling when the truck arrives. That single day of planning saves a full day of chaos, and the freight bill of lading arriving late in the process is the wrong moment to discover you need a forklift.

Decision Point 1 – Do You Own or Rent a Forklift?

The first branch of the decision tree: forklift. If you own a forklift or a tow-behind, unloading a car lift is a 20-minute exercise – driver lowers the pallet, you fork it into your shop, done. If you don’t, you have three options: rent one for the day, pay the freight carrier for a liftgate delivery (but the crates still end up curbside), or hire an installer with their own equipment (usually included in an install package).

Our Cedar Falls restoration customer didn’t have a forklift, didn’t want to rent one, and didn’t have a liftgate-accessible curb near his shop door because of the gravel driveway. We rolled our tow-behind forklift out to his shop on the delivery morning, met the LTL driver at the road, unloaded the crates onto our forks, and drove them across the gravel directly into his bay. Total added time: about 45 minutes. Total added cost: included in the install package. That is the argument for buying a car lift installed by us rather than DIY: we solve the logistics without turning it into a customer problem. If DIY is your path, own or rent the equipment before the freight truck shows up. Don’t figure it out at the curb – that is where change orders and hourly rentals both live.

Decision Point 2 – Shop Access and Doorway

Once the crates are off the truck, they have to get into the shop. That means a doorway wide enough for the longest crate (12 to 14 feet), a floor surface that will bear the forklift or pallet jack, and a path clear of clutter. Sounds obvious. It bites people every install, especially first-time buyers who assumed roll-up garage doors would swallow anything.

Our Cedar Falls customer’s shop door was 10 feet wide – plenty for the crates if they came in end-first. His floor was a solid 5-inch slab in the shop but a gravel driveway outside, which is why we needed the tow-behind forklift instead of a pallet jack. His path inside was mostly clear except for a workbench that had to be moved three feet. We handled all of that in advance because we walked the shop with him before delivery day. Every install we do includes a site walk – either in person for local customers or via a phone call with photos for further-away sites – and that walk identifies these obstacles before they cause problems. DIY buyers, please do the same walk yourself. Measure your doorway. Check your floor. Clear your path. Have somewhere to stage the crates once they’re inside.

Decision Point 3 – Storage Between Delivery and Install

Sometimes the freight arrives before the install crew. This is common because LTL delivery dates are estimates, not guarantees, and freight companies love to show up two days early. If your car lift install is scheduled for Thursday and the crates arrive Tuesday, where do they live for 48 hours?

Ideally, in the shop, on their pallets, out of the way of active work. If they must be outside, they need to be tarped and elevated because Iowa weather (spring rain, winter snow, summer humidity) does not respect factory-fresh cardboard. Water infiltration into a crate can rust hardware, wet electrical connections in the power unit, and generally cause install-day headaches. We’ve had customers leave crates uncovered in a spring shower and end up with a wet power unit that needed to be pulled apart and dried before install. Don’t do that. If the crates must be outside, tarp them completely, put them on 4x4s to keep the pallets off the wet ground, and check them every 12 hours. Better yet: schedule your install date, have the shipper hold freight until the day before install, and unload directly into a clean staged spot. That coordination is easy for us to arrange because we’re the shipper of record.

CV Axle Work – Why Your Lift Height Matters

Restoration shops doing CV axle and half-shaft work on classics and modifieds need a very specific lift height range. Working on a half-shaft requires the tech to remove the outer CV joint, sometimes the inner joint, and swap or reboot the shaft. That work is most comfortable at chest height – around 4.5 to 5 feet off the ground – because it involves torque wrenches, snap-ring pliers, and CV joint pullers all working from the outside of the wheel well.

A standard two-post car lift with 6-foot max lift height easily reaches that working range, and mechanical locks catch every position along the way. Restoration cars are typically lighter than modern vehicles, so capacity isn’t the concern – geometry is. Some early-70s classics have unusual lift points that don’t match modern arm-pad geometry, and that’s where adapter blocks become essential. When you’re supporting a 1972 Chevelle, a 1965 Mustang, and a 1969 Camaro all in the same week, versatile adapters are the difference between a smooth job and a bruised rocker panel. Restoration work rewards attention to detail; the lift setup is where that attention starts.

Install Day – Freight to First Job

Install day for our Cedar Falls restoration customer ran the standard 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. window. Freight arrived at 7:30 a.m. Our crew met the driver at the road with the tow-behind forklift, unloaded four crates in 25 minutes, and had everything staged inside the shop by 8:15 a.m. Anchor layout got marked at 8:30. Drilling and torqueing wrapped by 10:30. Post erection and cross-bracing finished at noon. Lunch break. Power unit mount and hydraulic lines by 1:30. Fluid fill, bleed, cycle test, and lock verification by 2:30. Customer walkthrough and Q&A by 3.

Total: eight hours from freight truck to fully commissioned car lift ready to hold a customer’s classic. That is the target we aim for on every install, and we hit it about 90% of the time. The 10% of installs that go longer usually involve a slab issue (bad concrete, unmarked rebar), an electrical surprise (subpanel maxed out, wrong voltage), or a freight problem (damaged crate, missing hardware). The Freight and Logistics Bottom Line

For a restoration shop buying a car lift for the first time, freight and logistics is not something to figure out at the curb. It’s something to plan alongside the purchase itself. The three questions to answer before you order: how will the crates come off the truck, how will they get into the shop, and where will they sit if delivery beats install day. Answer those three questions and freight becomes a non-event.
