What a leak actually tells you about the cylinder
Hydraulic cylinders on automotive lifts are simple machines: a barrel, a rod, a piston, and a stack of seals that keep fluid on the pressure side of the piston. When fluid shows up outside the barrel, one of three things has failed — the rod seal at the gland nut, the barrel-to-gland threaded joint, or a fitting or hose connection at the base. Internal seal failure is a different animal entirely and doesn’t leak onto the floor at all; it leaks past the piston inside the cylinder, which is why a lift can drift down overnight while the concrete stays perfectly dry.
Knowing which category you’re in changes everything about the repair. External weeping at the rod is usually a worn or nicked rod seal and a straightforward rebuild. Fluid at a fitting is often just a loose JIC connection or a failed O-ring that takes ten minutes with a wrench. But a barrel that’s pitted, scored, or bulged is telling you the cylinder itself is done. We’ve pulled cylinders out of Iowa shops where the rod was so badly scored from years of dirty fluid that it chewed a new seal apart in a week. That’s why we always ask what the fluid looks like — dark, gritty, or milky oil means contamination, and contamination is what killed the seal in the first place.
The five causes we see most in Iowa shops
First and most common: contaminated fluid. Shops top off with whatever’s on the shelf, water condenses in the reservoir over an unheated Iowa winter, and abrasive particles act like sandpaper on seals and rod plating. Second: rod damage. A dropped adapter, a swinging exhaust pipe, or a technician using the rod as a step leaves a nick that slices the seal on every stroke. Third: age. Nitrile seals harden and shrink after ten to twenty years of thermal cycling, and a lift that’s never leaked will start weeping the same season it turns twenty.
Fourth: overloading. A 9,000 lb two-post that regularly lifts a 3/4-ton crew cab with a service body is running pressures the cylinder was never spec’d for, and the rod seal is the weakest link. Fifth: alignment. On two-post lifts especially, worn slide blocks let the carriage cock in the column, side-loading the rod and wearing the seal unevenly on one side. We can usually tell which one it is by where the leak shows up and how the rod looks when we pull it. Is it safe to keep using the lift?
This is the question we get asked before anything else, and the honest answer is: it depends, but you should assume no until you’ve verified otherwise. A slow weep at the rod seal that leaves a dime-sized spot after a full day is a maintenance item — annoying, messy, and on the clock, but not an immediate hazard as long as the lift holds position on its locks and the reservoir stays full. Every ANSI-compliant lift is designed to be supported by mechanical locks, not hydraulic pressure, once it’s raised to a locked height.
Where we draw a hard line is any leak that causes the lift to drift, sag unevenly, or fail to hold at a lock position. That combination means either an internal piston seal failure or a locking system problem, and either one can put a vehicle on the floor. Rebuild the cylinder or replace it?
We make this call on every service trip, and it comes down to the condition of three surfaces: the rod plating, the barrel bore, and the gland threads. If the rod is smooth and the chrome is intact, if the bore has no scoring you can catch a fingernail on, and if the gland nut threads clean up, a seal kit is the right answer. Seal kits are inexpensive relative to a whole cylinder, and a rebuilt cylinder with fresh fluid and a new breather often outlasts the original because the fluid going back in is clean.
Replacement makes more sense when the rod is pitted from surface rust — extremely common on lifts stored in unheated Iowa buildings where humidity condenses on cold chrome — or when the barrel has been damaged. It also makes sense on older inground and some obsolete models where seal kits are no longer manufactured, in which case we source a modern equivalent cylinder and adapt the mounts. Labor matters too: if pulling a cylinder means dropping a carriage and disassembling half a column, the incremental cost of new versus rebuilt is small compared to the time already spent. Getting the right part for your lift
Cylinders are not interchangeable across brands or even across model years within a brand. Bore diameter, stroke length, rod diameter, port size and orientation, and mount style all have to match, and being off by half an inch of stroke means the lift won’t reach full height or will bottom the piston hard at the top. Then it’s disconnecting the hose, pulling the cylinder pins or bolts, and getting the unit out of the column, which on some designs requires removing the top cover, the equalizer cables, or the sheave assembly. Once it’s on the bench, the gland comes off, the rod and piston come out, and every seal, wiper, and O-ring gets replaced.
Reassembly is where the details matter. Seals get lubricated and installed with the right lip orientation, the gland torques to spec, and the cylinder gets bench-cycled before it goes back in. After installation we flush and refill with the correct grade of hydraulic fluid or ATF depending on the manufacturer’s spec, bleed the system through several full cycles, and then load-test the lift and verify every lock engages simultaneously. Preventing the next leak
The single highest-value habit is fluid management. Check the reservoir level monthly, change the fluid every two to three years on a busy commercial lift, and use a breather cap that’s actually intact so the reservoir isn’t inhaling shop dust and moisture.
