A Cedar Falls weekend hobbyist called us about a car lift for his attached garage. He does his own alignment on a family fleet of four vehicles, a couple of college-kid hand-me-downs and a wife-approved wagon, and he was tired of jack stands and creepers. His question was simple: what should he check before he buys? We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, and this is the pre-purchase checklist we walk every Cedar Falls hobbyist through. Some of it is stuff you can measure in an afternoon; some of it will save you two thousand dollars in do-overs. All of it applies to any car lift purchase.

If a full 2-post will not fit your Cedar Falls attached garage, a scissor or mid-rise alignment lift is often the right hobbyist compromise.

Measure Your Ceiling, Twice

Attached garages in Cedar Falls run the gamut from 8-foot flat ceilings on a 1960s ranch to full 12-foot clear on a newer build with vaulted trusses. Before you shop for anything else, measure the actual clear ceiling height from finished floor to the underside of the joist or drywall. Then measure it again next to the garage door opener and the springs. Openers and torsion tubes eat 6 to 8 inches of clearance in the exact spot you want the lift.

Under 10 feet clear? A full 2-post car lift is off the table unless you go with a low-ceiling model like a Rotary SPO10-500 LC or a Challenger CL10-LC. Under 9 feet? Look at a scissor mid-rise, which tops out around 48 inches and works fine for alignment and brake work. Under 8 feet clear? You are into portable mid-rise or wheel-lift territory. The hobbyist we helped in Cedar Falls had 9 feet 4 inches — tight but workable for a low-ceiling 2-post with a 10-foot safety-hook height.

Test Your Slab Before You Order

A commercial 2-post car lift needs 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum. Home garages built in the 70s and 80s often have 3-inch or 3.5-inch slabs with unknown mix. Do this test before you buy: drill a 3/8-inch pilot hole in an inconspicuous corner of the slab and measure how deep you go before you punch through into subgrade. If you get less than 4 inches, you are either pouring a new pad, cutting out a section for a thicker anchor pad, or picking a lift that runs on a lower-slab spec (some 4-post storage lifts are freestanding and do not anchor).

For the Cedar Falls hobbyist, we found 4 3/8 inches of slab — just enough. We recommended the Rotary anchor kit rated for standard slab and told him to drill a test hole at the actual column location before committing. If that hole came up short, we would swap to a 4-post storage lift with no anchoring requirement.

Alignment Work in a Hobbyist Bay

Alignment on a home car lift is doable, but the setup matters. You need turn plates at the front axle, slip plates at the rear (for the toe-and-thrust), a flat and level lift platform, and enough headroom to walk around the vehicle with an alignment head or laser rig. A scissor alignment lift is the most compact option and gets the geometry right for under-$5K used or mid-range new. A dedicated 4-post alignment lift is the pro-shop answer and fits in a home garage if you have the ceiling.

The hobbyist wanted true alignment capability — he was learning string alignment for his college kid’s autocross car. We steered him toward a scissor mid-rise with an alignment package: 5,000 lb capacity, 65 inches of rise, turn plates and rear slip plates included. It fit under his 9’4″ ceiling with room to spare, and the whole car lift package landed in his budget.

Lift-Bay Layout for a Two-Car Garage

Two-car attached garages in Cedar Falls average 20 feet wide by 22 feet deep. A 2-post car lift needs at least 12 feet between columns and 24 feet of clear length front-to-back including door swing. That means one bay of the garage is dedicated lift bay, and the other bay is for the car that stays on the ground. Do not try to squeeze the lift into a corner and park a car next to it; you will lose door-open clearance every time and you will damage a fender within the first year.

A scissor lift is more forgiving on layout — it lives roughly in the middle of a bay and folds down under 4 inches at rest, so you can park over it. The tradeoff is you cannot spin wrenches under the car while another vehicle is on top of the lift, but for a solo hobbyist that is fine. Plan the layout with masking tape on the floor before you buy. Stand where you would stand to work. If you feel cramped with tape on the floor, you will hate the real install.

Electrical Check for the Attached Garage

Cedar Falls hobbyist garages usually have a 100-amp panel serving the house with a 20-amp branch out to the garage for lights and outlets. That is not enough to run a lift. You will need a dedicated 30-amp 240V single-phase circuit for a 2-post, or a 20-amp 240V for most scissor mid-rise units. Open the panel and count open double-pole slots. If you have none, plan on a subpanel or a service upgrade before the lift arrives.

A subpanel with 60 amps of headroom is the sweet spot for a serious home shop — enough for the lift, a shop compressor, a MIG welder, and shop heat without nuisance-tripping the main. Have an electrician quote that work at the same time you get the car lift quote so you can budget together. Do not order a lift and then discover the electrical adds a couple thousand more.

Doors, Openers, and Other Obstructions

An overhead 2-post crossbar hits at about 12 feet on a standard column. A residential garage door opener rail hangs down about 10 inches from the ceiling. If those two overlap in the same vertical zone, one of them has to move. Options: relocate the opener to a jackshaft-style unit on the side of the door (Chamberlain and LiftMaster both make one, and installers in Cedar Falls will retrofit for under $600), buy a floor-plate lift instead of overhead, or reposition the lift in the bay to clear the opener.

The garage door springs (the horizontal torsion tube above the door) can also cause trouble. If the lift columns want to sit near the door header, verify the springs’ horizontal reach does not intrude into the column’s swing zone. Get a laser and shoot the ceiling for obstructions before you commit to the lift location. Ten minutes with a laser saves you having to move the whole car lift after install.

Final Pre-Purchase Checklist Before You Order

Here is the punch list we handed the Cedar Falls hobbyist and the exact list we send every home-garage customer. Measure ceiling clear to the lowest obstruction (opener rail, torsion tube, HVAC duct). Test slab thickness with a pilot hole. Confirm panel capacity and open breaker slots for a dedicated 240V circuit. Mask off the lift footprint on the floor and stand in it for ten minutes. Confirm door swing on the vehicle you plan to lift most often. Check with your municipality whether a permit is required (Cedar Falls does not require one for a home lift, but Waterloo does for certain zoning).
