When an RV and trailer service shop northeast of Cedar Rapids called us about their first real car lift, they had been doing exhaust and driveline work on jack stands and a pair of creeper boards for eleven years. Tow vehicles, dually pickups, cargo trailers with sagging spring hangers, the occasional Class C chassis that needed a U-joint — all of it done flat on the concrete. Their lead tech was in his fifties and his knees were done arguing about it. What follows is the honest version of their first year with us: how the freight showed up, what unloading actually took, what the install revealed about their slab, and how the work changed once the equipment was live.

What They Were Actually Trying to Fix
The shop’s core work is trailer axles, brake controllers, exhaust from the cat back, and driveline — carrier bearings, center support bushings, slip yokes that have been dry for a decade. Every one of those jobs lives on the underside of the vehicle, and every one of them needs both hands and a clear sightline. On jack stands you get neither. You get a flashlight in your teeth and a torch angle that fights you the whole way. Their average exhaust job was running about ninety minutes longer than it should have, and they were turning away driveline work in the winter because nobody wanted to lie on a cold slab.
So the first conversation had nothing to do with brands or model numbers. We asked what the heaviest thing they roll in weighs, how tall their door opening is, and whether they wanted vehicles up high enough to walk under or just high enough to work seated. Their answer — 3/4-ton and one-ton tow rigs, a 14-foot door, and full stand-up access — pointed straight at a clear-floor two-post in the 12,000 lb class. That is a very different machine from the 7,000 lb four-post a hobbyist orders for storage, and getting that distinction right on day one is what keeps a shop from buying twice.
Freight Is the Part Nobody Plans For
Here is the thing about ordering a two-post: the columns ship as a crated pallet that weighs more than a small car, and the carrier is not going to hand-truck it into your bay. A 12,000 lb clear-floor unit typically arrives as one long crate with the columns and overhead assembly plus a second smaller crate or banded bundle with arms, hardware, and the power unit. Total shipping weight lands somewhere between 1,800 and 2,600 lb depending on model. Curbside LTL delivery means exactly that — curbside.
This shop had a forklift because they handle trailer axles, so unloading was a non-event. Plenty of the customers we deal with do not, and that is where a $200 problem turns into a $900 problem. If you have no forklift, you have three options: pay the carrier for liftgate service and accept that a liftgate has weight limits that a long column crate can exceed, borrow a machine from a neighbor for an hour, or have us handle the delivery as part of an installed package so the equipment arrives on our truck with our gear. We tell people to sort this out before the order ships, not the morning the driver calls from the highway. We have watched a crate sit on a Cedar Rapids curb for two days because nobody had a plan, and freight carriers charge storage for that privilege.
The Slab Told Us Something They Did Not Know
Before install day we asked them to core or at least drill a test hole in the intended bay. Their building was a mid-1990s steel structure and everybody assumed six inches of concrete. Two of the three test spots came back closer to four and a quarter, with no visible rebar and a control joint running right where the passenger column wanted to sit. That is common in Iowa. Shops get built to a spec, then get expanded, and the addition gets whatever the concrete crew poured that week.
A two-post in the 12,000 lb range generally wants a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and manufacturers publish that number as a floor, not a target. Four and a quarter inches with a joint two feet away is not something we anchor into and hope. We had them cut and repour two pads roughly five feet square at eight inches with mat reinforcement, let it cure, and then we set the columns. That added about ten days and a modest concrete bill to the project, and it is the single reason their car lift has not moved a hair in the years since. The customers who call us with a machine that leans or an anchor that pulls almost always skipped this step. Pull a test core. It costs an hour.
Install Day and the First Week
Install itself was a one-day job with two of our techs. Columns set and shimmed plumb, overhead bar and cable routing, power unit mounted, hydraulic lines run, arms hung, then bleed the system and cycle it empty a dozen times. We adjust the arm restraints, set the overhead limit switch, verify both locks engage together, and torque anchors to spec with a calibrated wrench. Then we load-test it with an actual vehicle — usually the heaviest thing on the property — and run it up and down through the full travel.
The part shops underestimate is the first week of muscle memory. Their techs had eleven years of habit built around jack stands. We spent an extra hour walking them through arm placement on a dually, on a unibody crossover, and on a lowered car with plastic rocker cladding, because those are three completely different pad setups. We also drilled the boring stuff: never raise without checking overhead clearance, always lower onto the locks before going under, and never trust a lift you did not raise yourself. Two weeks in, their lead tech told us the exhaust job that used to take three hours was down to about seventy minutes. That is the whole return on investment right there, and it shows up in the labor log, not the brochure.
How Exhaust and Driveline Work Actually Changed
Full stand-up height is the thing that transforms driveline work. Dropping a two-piece shaft on a one-ton with the vehicle at chest height means you can support the center bearing with one hand and run the bolts with the other, instead of balancing forty pounds of steel on your sternum. Carrier bearing replacements that used to be a two-tech job became one-tech jobs. Same story for slip yoke service and U-joint work — you can actually see the phasing marks instead of guessing.
Exhaust benefited differently. On a two-post the wheels hang free and the whole underside is open with no rails in the way, so a full cat-back or a hanger repair on a long-wheelbase tow rig has nothing blocking the torch path. The shop did have to learn one limitation: a two-post is a terrible place to do alignment or anything needing wheels loaded, and it is not where you want a motorhome. For those they still use ramps and their pit. That mixed reality is normal. A single car lift does not replace every method in a shop; it removes the worst 60 percent of the misery. Month Nine: The First Real Service Call
About nine months in they called with a complaint we hear constantly: one side was drifting down slower than the other over a lunch break, and the locks were clicking unevenly. Nobody was hurt and nothing failed, but it is exactly the kind of symptom people ignore until it becomes expensive. We came out from Ames the following morning.
Cause was mundane. The cables had taken their normal initial stretch — every new two-post does this in the first year — and the equalization was off by roughly three-quarters of an inch, which threw the lock timing. We re-tensioned the cables, checked the sheaves for flat spots, topped the reservoir, and cleaned a slightly weeping fitting at the cylinder base. Total visit was under two hours. That is the kind of thing that should be on a calendar, not a crisis line. We tell every shop the same first-year schedule: check cable equalization and lock engagement at three months and again at twelve, grease the sheaves and slider blocks quarterly, and look at your hydraulic fluid level any time the lift feels slow. The urgent calls we get — like the four-post owner in Florida with a car stuck in the air and a leaking cylinder who did not even know the brand of his machine — almost always trace back to a machine nobody looked at for five years. What We’d Tell the Next Shop
Twelve months in, that Cedar Rapids shop added a second bay’s worth of capacity and is now looking at mobile columns for the trailer side of the business. Their advice to anyone considering the same jump, and ours, comes down to four things. Spec for the heaviest vehicle you actually service, not the average one — the price difference between 10,000 and 12,000 lb capacity is small compared to the cost of being under-specced. Test your concrete before you order, not after. Solve the unloading problem in writing before the crate leaves the warehouse. And budget for install and any concrete work as part of the project rather than a surprise.
