The first question we got from a collector outside Council Bluffs was not about a car lift at all — it was about his floor. He had six vehicles, a heated outbuilding he had finished himself, and a nagging suspicion that the slab his builder poured for “storage” was not going to hold up a four-post with a Corvette parked on top and a truck underneath. He was right to worry. We drove over from Ames, cored a plug, and found three and three-quarter inches of concrete over compacted fill with no reinforcement anywhere near where the posts wanted to land. This is the story of that first year, from the core sample through install day to the brake job that finally justified the whole thing.

The Core Sample That Changed the Budget

Coring concrete is a twenty-minute job that saves people thousands of dollars, and almost nobody does it. We pulled two plugs — one near each end of the proposed footprint — because slabs are rarely uniform. The near-door plug came back at 3.75 inches. The back-of-building plug came back at 4.25. Neither one had wire mesh or rebar in it. The base underneath was decent compacted fill, which was the good news, but the variation across twenty feet told us the pour had been done fast and screeded by eye.

For a four-post storage unit, the load is spread across four base plates rather than concentrated in two columns, which is genuinely more forgiving. Most manufacturers of 8,000 to 9,000 lb four-post models spec a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and some do not require anchoring at all for the freestanding versions. But “does not require anchoring” assumes a flat, sound slab. On a floor that varies half an inch across the footprint, you are shimming, and shimming a tall four-post to level is where a lot of owners create their own problems. We told him the honest version: he could probably run it as-is with careful shimming, or he could cut and re-pour four pads and never think about it again. He chose the pads, and a year later he still says it was the right call.

Rebar, Mesh, and What Actually Reinforces a Pad

There is a lot of confusion about reinforcement in garage floors. Welded wire mesh, the stuff that comes in rolls, does very little if it ends up laying on the ground instead of suspended in the middle of the pour — which is what happens on most residential jobs. Rebar tied in a grid and set on chairs at mid-depth is a different animal. For the four pads we cut, we ran #4 rebar on roughly twelve-inch centers, doweled into the existing slab with epoxy-set pins so the new concrete would not simply float independently, and poured to six inches.

Depth matters because anchor bolts need embedment. A typical wedge anchor for lift duty wants three to three and a half inches of embedment plus room below so the anchor is not bottoming out on subgrade. On a four-inch slab you are right at the edge. On six inches with rebar you have margin, and margin is the entire point. Cure time is the part people rush. Concrete gains most of its strength in the first week but keeps gaining for a month. We would not anchor a car lift into a pad younger than seven days, and in a cold Council Bluffs January we would want ten to fourteen days with the building heated. Anchoring green concrete is one of those mistakes that does not announce itself immediately — it shows up two winters later as a column that has developed a wobble.

Choosing Four-Post Over Two-Post for a Collection

He originally called about a two-post because that is what his buddy had in a commercial shop. For a collector storing vehicles, the four-post is almost always the better answer, and the reasoning is worth spelling out. A four-post is drive-on, which means you can park a car on it in ninety seconds without positioning arms under pinch welds. It does not care whether the vehicle underneath is a truck or a sports car. And it can be fitted with casters, so if you need the floor for something else you roll the whole thing to the wall.

Capacity was the next conversation. His heaviest vehicle was a three-quarter-ton pickup at about 6,800 pounds. The instinct is to buy exactly enough, and the instinct is wrong. We steered him to a 9,000 lb model rather than a 7,000, because headroom in capacity means the hydraulics are not working at their limit every cycle, cables see less stress, and if he buys something heavier in five years he is not shopping again. The price gap between those tiers is real but modest compared to the cost of replacing the whole setup. Ceiling height decided the rest — his building had 12-foot sidewalls and a flat ceiling, which gave him just enough room to put a low sports car on top of a mid-height vehicle underneath, but ruled out stacking two SUVs. We measured to the bottom of the light fixtures, not the ceiling, because that is what actually stops you.

Install Day in a Finished Building

Installing in a finished, heated, insulated outbuilding is different from installing in a bare commercial bay. Everything you do makes dust or noise that somebody is going to live with. We tented the cut area, ran a vacuum on the saw, and hauled the spoil out the overhead door rather than through the shop. The four pads went in on a Tuesday. We came back the following Thursday to set the equipment.

The actual assembly on a four-post is straightforward: set the two powered posts and the two idler posts, level the base plates with steel shims, install the runways, thread the cables over the sheaves, hang the power unit, fill and bleed, then cycle it empty a dozen times while checking that all four locks drop into the same notch at the same moment. That last step is where a self-install usually goes sideways. If one cable is a turn and a half tighter than the others, one corner rises early and the runway sits out of plane. It works, it feels fine, and it slowly beats up the sheaves and the lock ladders. We spend a solid hour on cable equalization on every four-post we set, and we show the owner how to check it, because cables stretch during the first month of use and will need one adjustment. He called us at about week five to say one corner was lagging. That was exactly on schedule, and it was a twenty-minute visit.

Living With a Car Lift as Storage

The first several months were pure storage. Car on top, project truck underneath, floor space recovered. A few things surprised him that surprise most collectors. First, the drip tray situation: if the vehicle up top leaks anything, it lands on the vehicle below. Optional drip trays that sit between the runways solve this and are cheap. Second, tire flat-spotting on long-term storage is still a thing even in the air, so he rotates which car goes up. Third, the runways collect dust and grit that grinds into the lock ladders. A shop broom once a month handles it.

The maintenance rhythm on a four-post used for storage is lighter than a service unit but not zero. Cables want a visual inspection for broken strands and a light coat of penetrating lubricant a couple times a year. The hydraulic cylinder seal is the component that tends to announce itself first — we get calls almost weekly from owners whose cylinder started weeping and who now have a vehicle stuck in the air. That situation is fixable, but it is a lot more stressful with a car up there. Catching a seep early, while the equipment is empty and down, turns an emergency into a scheduled repair. We stock cylinders and seal kits for most brands and can usually match a part off photos even when the owner has no idea what brand their equipment is.

The First Real Job: Brake Service and Rotor Swaps

Nine months in, the front rotors on the Corvette were done and he decided to do the job himself rather than trailer it somewhere. This is where the four-post limitation shows up: the wheels are sitting on the runways. You cannot pull a wheel until you get the vehicle off its tires. Rolling jacks are the answer — a pair of hydraulic or air-over-hydraulic jacks that bridge the runways and lift the car by its frame points so all four wheels hang free.

He had skipped them at purchase to save money, which is the single most common regret we hear from collectors. He bought a pair that spring. With rolling jacks in place, a rotor swap on a lift at chest height is a genuinely pleasant job — no crawling, no jack stands, no wondering if the car is going to shift. He described the difference as the first time the purchase actually felt justified, which is fair. Storage is nice. Working on a vehicle at a comfortable height without getting on the floor is what changes how often you actually do the work. What We Would Tell the Next Council Bluffs Buyer

Looking back at the whole year, the decisions that mattered were made before anything got bolted down. Core the slab. Do not guess. If the concrete is thin or unreinforced, cut pads and pour properly with rebar — it is a one-time cost against a lifetime of not worrying. Buy a capacity tier above your heaviest vehicle. Measure ceiling height to the bottom of the lowest obstruction. And decide honestly whether you are storing vehicles or working on them, because that answer drives whether you need rolling jacks, drip trays, or a two-post in a second bay.

The things that did not matter as much as he expected: brand prestige, exotic finishes, and the last five hundred pounds of capacity. The things that mattered more: level installation, properly equalized cables, and having somebody local who stocks parts.
