A dealership service manager in Iowa City called us this spring asking a question we hear more often than you would think from franchised stores: whether the next round of car lift replacements in their fixed-op bays should be overhead or baseplate configuration going forward. The dealership is looking at replacing six aging two-posts across three different bay layouts, and the answer is not automatically the same for all six units. This is a technical deep-dive into what actually changes between overhead and baseplate with real dimensions, real clearances, and where each one belongs.

What overhead versus baseplate really changes on a car lift

The mechanical difference between the two configurations is where the hydraulic equalization runs between the columns. An overhead two-post routes the equalization cables and the hydraulic hose through a crossbar that connects the tops of the columns above the vehicle. A baseplate two-post routes the same equipment through a plate at floor level between the columns instead. Everything else is essentially the same across both configurations: the cylinders, the arms, the lock pawls, and the hydraulic power unit share designs.

That single difference cascades into three real dealership-scale decisions. First, the vertical clearance a vehicle needs to fit under the crossbar limits what you can lift on an overhead configuration when a tall vehicle rolls in. Second, the floor plate on a baseplate creates a small trip footprint and a place where fluid can accumulate over the years of drips. Third, the overall installed height of the assembly changes what ceilings you can put the lift under in an existing building. For a car lift going into an established dealership building with fixed ceiling heights, that third point is often what forces the answer.

Rise time, max rise, and under-arm clearance: real numbers

The Rotary SPO12 overhead has a maximum rise around 74 inches at the arm pad, an overall installed height near 145 inches or about 12 feet 1 inch, and a rise time from full down to full up of roughly 45 to 55 seconds depending on power supply. The baseplate version, where Rotary still offers one in the SPOA family, has essentially the same pad rise and rise time. The installed height drops by about 15 inches because the crossbar is not there overhead.

Under-arm clearance at full rise is where dealerships care most for tech workflow. With arms at 44 inches, you have about 30 inches of vertical work space under the vehicle’s frame for a technician standing under a lifted sedan comfortably. The same is true for both configurations. What differs is whether the vehicle roof, at full rise, contacts anything overhead. On a baseplate the answer is only the ceiling itself. On an overhead the answer is the crossbar, which sits about 14 inches below the ceiling and about 6 inches above a standard passenger-car roofline at full rise. That gap is what limits overhead usefulness on tall vehicles.

Ceiling height at a typical Iowa City dealership

Most Iowa City dealership service bays we walk through measure 13 to 14 feet floor-to-truss, with usable ceiling under lights and sprinklers around 12 to 12.5 feet at the low point. That is comfortable for an overhead two-post on passenger cars but tight for full-height SUVs and half-tons at full rise near the crossbar. For the dealership’s Sprinter service work and the occasional lifted truck coming in on customer pay, the crossbar clearance runs out well before the lift reaches its rated rise.

A baseplate car lift removes that ceiling constraint completely. You can rise the vehicle until its roof is inches from the ceiling itself, gaining a foot or more of practical service clearance on the tallest vehicles. For a dealership that services a mix of passenger cars and taller vehicles from the same bay, that flexibility is often worth the tradeoff of running a hose across the floor. Some dealerships insist on overhead configuration because it keeps the floor clean and the aesthetic looks more professional to walk-in customers. Others prioritize service flexibility and choose baseplate. Neither answer is universally right for every building.

Exhaust and driveline access on both configurations

Below the arms, the two configurations are functionally identical for the tech doing the work. Exhaust work happens between the columns with the vehicle at chest height, driveline work happens from front pumpkin to rear diff with the wheels hanging free, and neither the crossbar nor the baseplate meaningfully changes the access to the components. The one edge case is when a technician needs to stand between the columns at full vehicle rise for extended overhead welding. On a baseplate the hose is under his feet. On an overhead nothing is under his feet at all.

For a dealership doing high-volume exhaust and driveline PM, the practical impact is small in either direction over the long run. Techs adapt to whichever configuration the shop has installed within a week or two of daily use. What matters more is whether the arms and pad geometry give clean access to the OEM lift points for the vehicles the dealership actually services on a Tuesday morning. A car lift with the wrong arm swing on a compact hybrid will slow every tech in the shop. A car lift with the right arm swing will pay for itself in six months of small time savings.

Hose routing, floor obstacles, and technician workflow

The floor hose on a baseplate two-post is the single most-debated feature at any dealership install meeting we sit in. In practice it is a flat armored hose that runs across the drive-thru area between the columns, protected by a steel or composite cover strip. Techs walk over it hundreds of times per day for years without incident. It is not the trip hazard critics claim it will be, and in a well-installed baseplate the cover is flush enough that a floor jack rolls over it cleanly.

What does slow workflow on a baseplate car lift is if the shop uses drive-on ramps, portable exhaust extractors, or transmission jacks that were sized for a completely flat floor with no obstructions. Those tools work fine on both configurations but require slightly more care around the hose cover on a baseplate. For a new-build dealership shop with high ceilings, we usually recommend overhead unless ceiling height forces the baseplate. For a retrofit into an older building with a low truss or an obstructed ceiling, baseplate wins on utility.

Which manufacturers actually still make baseplate for 10K and up

The baseplate market has thinned out over the past decade of consolidation. Most manufacturers have consolidated their commercial two-post offerings around overhead configuration because it sells easier at auto shows and because the aesthetic argument tends to win with buyers who have not yet used both. Rotary still offers baseplate in select configurations across the SPOA lineup. Challenger’s dealer network can source baseplate in some capacities on request. BendPak makes baseplate primarily in their higher-capacity and home-shop lines rather than their commercial mainline.

For a dealership that specifically wants a 10,000 lb or 12,000 lb baseplate two-post, the choices narrow but they still exist in the market. What does not exist in serious volume anymore is a baseplate at 15,000 lb or above from a major manufacturer. That category is essentially overhead-only now for anything above heavy-duty light truck weights.
