Buying a car lift for a hobbyist garage in southern Minnesota is a decision that mostly lives or dies on the concrete under the lift, and most weekend mechanics discover that too late. This checklist walks through the specific pre-purchase items to verify before you spend a dollar, with a focus on the seasonal-storage use case that dominates hobbyist buying in this region.

Item one: measure the actual slab thickness

The first checklist item is knowing what your slab actually is, not what it was supposed to be. Homeowner slabs in southern Minnesota built between 1980 and 2010 were often spec’d at four inches and poured at three-and-a-half, or spec’d at three-and-a-half and poured at three. That extra half-inch matters when you’re anchoring a car lift into it. The way to verify is either a core sample or a hammer-drill hole in an inconspicuous corner. Drill until you break through, measure, patch.

For a two-post lift, we want four inches of 3,000 psi concrete minimum. For a four-post storage lift, four inches is still the target but the load spreads across four base plates instead of two anchor patterns, so a marginal slab is more forgiving. If your slab measures three inches, the honest answer is either a slab saw-cut and repour for the lift pad, or a different lift type that doesn’t need floor anchors. Skipping this check and hoping the anchors hold is not a plan.

Item two: verify rebar or wire mesh reinforcement

Slab thickness is only half the story. Reinforcement is the other half. A four-inch slab with proper rebar on a two-foot grid is a strong foundation for a car lift. A four-inch slab with nothing but wire mesh half-inch down from the surface is a lot weaker than it looks. Southern Minnesota residential garages built as budget pours often have the wire mesh version, and the wire mesh version doesn’t do much for anchor pull-out resistance.

You can sometimes see rebar in a saw-cut edge if the slab has one. Otherwise, ground-penetrating radar from a local concrete contractor can map what’s in there without cutting. The cost is reasonable and the answer decides whether you can install a lift at all. If the reinforcement isn’t there, the fix is either a saw-cut and repour of the lift pad with proper rebar, or accepting that a lift isn’t going into that slab. Hoping the anchors will hold in unreinforced concrete is the version of this that ends badly.

Item three: check the ceiling height at the lowest overhead point

Ceiling height decides which lift configurations you can even consider. Measure to the lowest overhead obstruction, not the peak. That means garage door tracks, opener motors, light fixtures, and any HVAC ducting. A ceiling that looks like 12 feet at the ridge might be 9 feet at the door track, and the door track is what the lift crossbar or vehicle roof will hit first.

For a four-post car lift used for seasonal storage of a passenger vehicle underneath, plan on needing the fully raised height plus the stored vehicle’s height plus about two feet of clearance to walk around underneath. For most passenger vehicles that means about 11 to 12 feet of clear height minimum. Item four: plan for the electrical the lift will actually need

Most home garages have 110-volt outlets and maybe a 220 for a welder. Most car lift power units run on 220-volt single-phase, and they need a dedicated circuit sized to the pump motor. A shared 220 that also feeds a welder isn’t a legal or safe answer. Adding a new dedicated 220 circuit from the panel to the lift location is a task that should happen before the lift shows up, not after.

For a southern Minnesota hobbyist garage with an existing 100-amp panel, adding a lift circuit is usually straightforward but worth pricing before you commit to the lift purchase. For an older garage with a 60-amp subpanel from the house, you may need a service upgrade before a lift is realistic. That’s a conversation with an electrician, not a car lift installer, and it’s the kind of hidden cost that surprises buyers who didn’t put it on the pre-purchase checklist.

Item five: think seasonal about the storage use case

Seasonal storage is the specific use case that drives most southern Minnesota hobbyist lift purchases. The pattern is a summer project car, a track car, or a classic that goes on the lift from Halloween to the first warm weekend in April. During those five months, the vehicle sits at height and something else parks underneath. That use case wants a four-post drive-on with locking latches, not a two-post that holds the vehicle by the frame pads for five months.

Four-post lifts store on mechanical locks with the hydraulic system depressurized, which is what you want for long-term storage. The car sits on the runways with wheels supporting the load, not on frame pads with the arms holding tension. That’s the safe long-term configuration. Item six: budget for install and anchors, not just the lift

The sticker price of a car lift is not the total cost. Add professional install, floor anchors, the concrete work if the slab isn’t right, the electrical circuit, and any bay layout adjustments, and the total lands well above the equipment number. Hobbyists who budget only for the lift and then discover the install cost end up either delaying the project or cutting corners on install, and neither is a good outcome.

The last checklist item is thinking through how the winter-storage plan actually works. Where does the primary vehicle park when the project car is up on the lift? Is there enough clearance to open the primary vehicle’s doors with the project car overhead? Can you get to a workbench with both vehicles in position? These are the workflow questions that show up in year two when you discover the storage configuration you loved in the showroom doesn’t quite work in your garage.
