The shop runs mostly Class 4 and Class 5 straight trucks with the occasional light-duty pickup, and the inspection bay had to handle both without a lift swap. That constraint drove the choice, and it drove the cost. Cost is not just the sticker on the lift — it is the electrical, the freight, the install labor, the first-year service, and the ten-year parts curve. Annual state inspections in Iowa require the vehicle in the air, lights functioning, brakes checked, and steering components examined. For Class 4-5 trucks that is a real load on a car lift — a stripped-chassis straight truck at empty weight sits around fifteen thousand pounds, and a loaded one can push twenty. That points to a heavy-duty two-post or a mobile column set, not a general-service two-post. The owner wanted the two-post approach so his tech could work full days from the same fixed lift.

We spec-ed a Rotary heavy-duty two-post with an eighteen-thousand-pound capacity, tall columns, and a wider column spread than a standard commercial two-post. That gave headroom on capacity and cleared any Class 5 straight truck he was likely to see. It also meant three-phase power, larger anchors, and a longer install than a light-duty lift. Every one of those items showed up in the cost breakdown.

Why Three-Phase Electrical Changes the Cost Picture

A heavy-duty car lift at fifteen-thousand-plus capacity typically runs a five- to seven-and-a-half horsepower motor. That kind of motor almost always wants three-phase power for reliability, lift speed, and current draw. Three-phase is standard in industrial buildings but not universal in shops — some shops run on single-phase two-hundred-forty-volt and would need a rotary phase converter or a static phase converter to run a three-phase motor. Those converters add cost and reduce motor life, so we prefer real three-phase where we can get it.

This Waukee shop had two-hundred-eight-volt three-phase already at the panel from an earlier compressor install. That saved several thousand dollars in electrical upgrade costs and let us wire the lift directly to a dedicated branch. If the shop had needed to bring in a new three-phase service or install a converter, the cost picture would have shifted a lot. We flagged that on the survey and confirmed the phase readings with a meter before quoting.

Breaker Sizing and Panel Load Calculation

A three-phase five-horsepower motor at two-hundred-eight volts draws roughly sixteen amps at full load. Standard practice is to size the breaker at one-hundred-twenty-five percent of full-load amps for continuous duty — around a twenty- to twenty-five-amp three-pole breaker. The wire size for that branch is typically number ten or number eight copper depending on run length, and the disconnect at the lift base is a fused or lockable non-fused switch to code.

Panel load also matters. The shop’s existing three-phase panel had capacity for two more circuits without a service upgrade. If it had not, the electrical scope would have grown to include a subpanel or a main upgrade. We worked with the shop’s electrician to confirm the load calc before the lift order went in. Getting the electrical settled before ordering the car lift is the difference between a smooth install and a lift sitting in the corner while the panel gets rebuilt.

Lift Purchase Tier: What the Car Lift Actually Costs

Heavy-duty commercial two-post car lift pricing runs in tiers. A light-commercial ten- to twelve-thousand-pound Rotary or Challenger sits in a lower tier. A fifteen-thousand-pound heavy-duty sits in a mid tier. An eighteen-thousand-pound to thirty-thousand-pound heavy-duty commercial two-post sits in the upper tier. This owner’s eighteen-thousand-pound Rotary landed in the upper tier, with the extended columns and the wide-drive arms adding a modest percentage.

Accessories add to the equipment cost. Pinch-weld pucks, tall pad extenders, arm restraint upgrades, and a lockable disconnect at the column are all worth having. On a heavy-duty car lift we always spec the tall extenders because the truck frames sit higher than a passenger vehicle and the arm-end needs to reach the correct pickup point. Skipping that saves a few hundred dollars up front and costs the shop days over the life of the lift.

Install Labor and Freight

Freight on a heavy-duty two-post ships on a full flatbed, LTL or dedicated, weight in the range of twenty-five hundred to three thousand pounds crated. LTL freight rates depend on distance and season — we quote freight at the time of order, and we get a discount rate through our carrier relationships that lands in a real range. This Waukee delivery came in on a dedicated flatbed with a lift-gate we did not need because the shop had a forklift.

Install labor for a heavy-duty two-post runs one to two days depending on whether the concrete needs cores, whether the electrical is ready, and whether the freight path is clean. On this job we installed in a single long day with a three-person crew. Anchor drilling, column set, cable tension, cycle test, and sign-off all happened in one go. That is normal for a heavy-duty car lift when the site survey is done right.

First-Year Service, Parts, and Annual Inspection

First-year service on a heavy-duty commercial car lift runs a modest fixed cost — annual inspection, cable check, cylinder seal check, and full ALI sticker refresh. Parts wear in the first year is minimal on a well-installed lift, usually just a lube on the sheaves and a torque check on the anchors. For this shop we set the annual inspection for the anniversary of install day and put it on the calendar with the shop’s other equipment inspections.

Parts availability matters for cost planning. Rotary and Challenger heavy-duty parts are stocked and shipped inside a few days for common items. Cables, seal kits, sheave bearings, and arm restraint kits are all off-the-shelf. That means a lift down for a common failure is back up within a week, not sitting for a month waiting on parts. That cost — downtime — is the biggest cost most shops forget to model.

Total Cost of Ownership Over Ten Years

Total cost of ownership on this eighteen-thousand-pound heavy-duty car lift includes purchase, install, electrical, annual inspection, and a cable replacement in year seven or eight. Over ten years, the amortized annual cost lands in a specific tier — call it a low four-figure number per year, spread across thousands of vehicle inspections. On a per-inspection basis the lift is a small line item. On a per-day basis the payback is very fast.
