Every good install starts the same way: with a car lift installation checklist and a tape measure, not a drill. The jobs that go sideways almost never fail because of the lift itself. They fail because somebody found out on install day that the slab was four inches thick, the overhead door track sat exactly where the crossbar needed to live, or the only power in the building was a single 15-amp circuit shared with the compressor. Start With Concrete, Because Nothing Else Matters If It Fails

The first line on any car lift installation checklist is the slab, and it is the one item you cannot fake. Most two-post lifts in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb class want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and a lot of manufacturers now specify more than that for higher capacities or for asymmetric configurations that concentrate load at the posts. Four-post lifts spread the load across four base plates and are more forgiving, but forgiving is not the same as unlimited. We have core-drilled slabs in older Iowa shops that measured a hair over three inches with no rebar and gravel fill underneath, and no anchor on the market fixes that.

Check thickness with a small test hole or a rotary hammer bit and a depth mark, not by guessing from the garage door apron. Look at how old the pour is — anchors need fully cured concrete, and 28 days is the standard wait on fresh work. Then look at where the seams and control joints run. Anchoring within about six inches of a joint or a slab edge is asking for a blowout when you torque the bolts. If the slab does not measure up, the fix is a saw-cut footing pad poured to spec under each post. It is a day of work and it is cheaper than a lift that walks.

Measure Ceiling Height Three Different Ways

Nominal ceiling height is a bad number to plan around. What matters is the lowest obstruction in the path of the lift and the vehicle. In a residential garage that is usually the door opener rail, the header above the overhead door, or a light fixture nobody thought about. In shops it is often a truss chord, a heater tube, sprinkler heads, or a run of conduit that got added after the building went up. Measure from the finished floor to the underside of the lowest thing in the bay, and measure it in three spots — front, middle, and rear of where the vehicle will sit.

Then match that against real numbers, not marketing numbers. A clearfloor two-post lift needs overhead room for the crossbar plus whatever the tallest vehicle you plan to service adds on top of full rise. A baseplate model moves that structure to the floor and buys you a couple of feet of vertical, which is why it shows up so often in home garages with eight- or nine-foot ceilings. Four-post storage lifts need enough height to park a second car underneath the first, and that math is unforgiving. We would rather tell you on the phone that the lift you picked will not fit than show up with it on the trailer. If ceiling height is your limiting factor, a mid-rise scissor or a low-rise setup may do the work you actually need.

Bay Layout, Column Spacing, and Swing Room

Draw the bay before you buy. Post-to-post width and the drive-through clearance on a two-post determine what you can pull in, and the arms need room to swing to their full reach without hitting a wall, a bench, or a floor drain. Leave at least a couple of feet of walking room behind each post so a tech can get to the release handle and the safety locks without turning sideways. We have relocated more than one air line, parts washer, and welding cart because they landed exactly where the driver’s door needed to open at full rise.

Think about the whole floor, not just one bay. If you are adding a second or third lift, keep the columns on a consistent line so vehicles track straight and so hose and cable runs stay clean. Watch floor drains and trench drains — you cannot anchor into a drain, and lifts installed too close to one tend to sit unlevel. Note the slope of the slab too; most shop floors pitch toward a drain, and a post base that sits on a quarter-inch-per-foot slope needs shims to bring the columns plumb. Shimming is normal and expected, but it needs to be planned and it needs to be steel, not scrap plywood. This part of the site prep checklist saves more callbacks than any other single item.

Power, Air, and What the Electrician Needs to Know

Most single-phase power units in this class run on 208-230V and want a dedicated 30-amp circuit. Some smaller home units run 110V, and a few commercial setups are three-phase. Know which one you bought before the electrician quotes the job, because rewiring after the fact is pure waste. Tell your electrician where the power unit will mount — usually on the driver-side column or a nearby wall bracket — and have the disconnect within sight of the operator. Motor rotation matters on three-phase; if the pump runs backward it will not build pressure, and that is a two-minute fix if you know to look for it.

Air matters too. Most lifts use a shop air line to release the mechanical safety locks, typically wanting somewhere in the 90 to 120 PSI range with a clean, drained supply. If your compressor is at the far end of the building through fifty feet of undersized line, the locks will be sluggish. Running a dedicated drop to the lift column while the walls are open is easy; doing it later is not. And keep water out of that line. Iowa humidity puts real moisture into shop air, and moisture in an air-release cylinder means corrosion and a lock that sticks halfway.

The Anchor and Torque Section of Our Car Lift Installation Checklist

Anchoring is where a careful crew separates itself. Use the anchors the manufacturer specifies — the correct diameter, the correct embedment depth, and the correct quantity per base plate. Substituting a shorter wedge anchor because it was on the shelf is how columns loosen over the first year. Drill the hole to full depth, blow it out completely with compressed air or a brush, and set the anchor so the threads sit at the right height for a washer, nut, and any shims you added. Dust left in the hole cuts holding power dramatically, and that is not a theoretical concern.

Then torque to spec with a real torque wrench and write it down. Most lifts in this range call for somewhere between 85 and 150 ft-lbs depending on anchor size, and the number is in the manual for a reason. Check plumb on both columns with a four-foot level before final torque, adjust shims, and re-check after. If an anchor spins and will not hold, do not keep cranking on it — move the hole and abandon the failed one properly. Cables, Hoses, Locks, and the Startup Sequence

With the columns down and plumb, the mechanical work begins. Route equalization cables over their sheaves without twists, set the hydraulic hose runs so nothing rubs a moving carriage, and torque the cable ends evenly so both carriages rise together. Fill the reservoir with the specified hydraulic oil — usually an ISO 32 or a compatible ATF depending on the brand — and bleed the system by cycling the carriages to full rise and back several times. Air in the cylinder shows up as jerky travel and uneven carriage height, and it takes a few cycles to purge.

Then set the safeties. Every lock should engage audibly and release together when air is applied. Cycle the lift to each lock position and confirm both sides catch at the same tooth. Test the overhead shutoff bar on a clearfloor model. Run one loaded cycle with a real vehicle at moderate weight, listen for anything binding, and re-check anchor torque afterward — anchors sometimes take a small amount of additional turn after the first load. Label the bay with capacity, hang the manual where somebody will find it, and walk the operator through lock engagement and lowering. A lift that everyone knows how to use safely is the actual finish line.

Documentation, Inspection, and Handing Off the Bay

Paperwork is the least exciting part of a car lift installation checklist and the part that protects you. Keep the installation manual, the anchor torque record, the model and serial numbers off the column data plate, and the date of first use in one folder. When a part fails in year four, those serial numbers are what let us pull the correct cable, cylinder, lock ladder, or carriage slide block the first time instead of guessing from photos. Set up the maintenance cadence before you get busy. Daily visual on cables and hoses, monthly lubrication of sheaves and slide blocks, and an annual inspection to ANSI/ALI standards by someone qualified.
