Installing a car lift in a new pole barn is less about the machine itself and more about sequencing — the concrete pour, the wall height, the door swing, and the electrical rough-in all have to line up before the delivery truck shows up. We recently walked an overlanding builder in northern Missouri through exactly that process for his 40×60 pole barn with 14-foot walls, and a lift he wanted commissioned before drywall went in. This case study is drawn from that install and a dozen others we have done across the Iowa-Missouri-Nebraska corridor over the last few years, and the sequencing lessons apply whether you are pouring a brand-new slab or retrofitting a garage you built ten years ago.

Why sequencing beats spec-sheet shopping
Most first-time buyers start by comparing spec sheets — capacity, arm reach, lift height, drive-through width — and get to the sequencing questions only after the machine arrives. That is backwards. A modern two-post car lift will bolt to almost any properly poured slab, but if the slab was poured too thin, if the ceiling headers land in the wrong spot, or if the 220V receptacle is thirty feet from where the power unit needs to sit, you are paying for problems that were solvable a month earlier for zero dollars.
Our northern Missouri customer had already framed his pole barn when he called us. The good news was 14-foot walls and a monolithic 5-inch slab poured on virgin subgrade. The bad news: his electrical sub had run the compressor circuit along the wall where the power unit needed to hang. We caught it during the phone walkthrough, moved the circuit before drywall went up, and saved him a service call after install. That is why we do a walkthrough with every buyer before the truck rolls, whether they are in Ames or three states away. Lock the boring stuff — slab, ceiling, power, drainage — before you argue about brand, and the lift itself becomes the easiest step in the build.
Slab thickness, PSI, and rebar are non-negotiable
Every manufacturer publishes a minimum slab spec, and every manufacturer means it. For a 10,000 lb two-post, we want to see at least 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured a minimum of 28 days, poured on properly compacted base. For 12,000 lb and up, we push for 5 to 6 inches. Rebar is nice; fiber mesh alone is not enough on the edges of an older slab. We also want to know where the control joints are — anchors set within three inches of a joint have a nasty habit of blowing a corner out on the first cycle.
Our northern Missouri customer sent us three photos of the pour, plus his sub’s ticket showing 4,000 PSI mix and #4 rebar on 18-inch centers. That is overkill for a 10K car lift and exactly what we want to see. Compare that to a retrofit call we handled outside Des Moines last spring, where the buyer had a 3.5-inch slab poured over dirt in 1978. We ended up cutting out a 6×8 pad in each column footprint and re-pouring to spec. Doable, but a week of extra work. If you are still in the design phase, over-pour the lift zone — it costs almost nothing and eliminates a whole class of headaches.
Ceiling height in a pole barn: 12, 14, or 16 feet
A common question we field from pole-barn builders is what ceiling height they actually need. The honest answer is 12 feet is a hard minimum for a standard-rise car lift, 14 feet is the sweet spot for lifting most passenger vehicles fully clear of the floor, and 16 feet is what you want if you plan to service tall SUVs, dually pickups, or occasionally raise a Class B RV. Our overlanding customer landed at 14 feet, and it was the right call — his built Tacoma with a roof-top tent barely fits under an 11-foot header when it is on the ground, let alone lifted.
The trap in a pole barn is trusting the nominal wall height. Trusses eat headroom. Purlins eat headroom. Ceiling-mounted lights and heat tubes eat headroom. When we quote overhead-style lifts we ask for the lowest obstruction inside the lift footprint, not the peak, and we recommend at least 6 inches of clearance over the shutoff bar. If you cannot get 14 clear feet, a floorplate car lift will save you 12 to 15 inches of overhead — a real option worth pricing before you re-frame the barn.
Rough-in the power before you close the wall
Almost every symmetric or asymmetric two-post car lift ships with a 220V single-phase power unit, drawing somewhere between 20 and 30 amps at startup. That is a dedicated circuit — not a shared branch with your compressor, not tapped off the shop lights, not a plug on an extension cord. We ask installers to land a 30-amp receptacle within 6 feet of the passenger-side column, at about 5 feet above the finished floor. That way the plug lives above splash level and the whip does not drape across the drive-through zone.
The Missouri customer ran his conduit in EMT and stubbed out where we asked. Total labor delta: maybe two hours for his electrician. Compare that to a retrofit outside Council Bluffs where the shop panel was on the wrong wall entirely and we had to trench the yard for a new sub-panel. Door swing, header height, and drive-through width
The biggest surprise for first-time buyers is the drive-through footprint. A 10K clearfloor two-post needs about 11.5 feet of clear width between columns, and the arms swing another 3 feet outside that when they are extended. If your overhead door is 10 feet wide and the lift sits 8 feet inside the door, you can drive in but you cannot swing the arms out fully to load a wide truck. Our northern Missouri customer had a 12-foot door, which was fine, but he did have to shift the lift eight inches south of centerline so the passenger-side arm could clear the door track.
Header height above the overhead door matters too. On overhead-cable lifts, the overhead beam sits at roughly 12 feet 4 inches with the arms down. If your door opener rail sits at 11 feet 6 inches, we route the beam behind it — but that only works if the beam has clearance to the truss webs. Send us photos of the door opener, the truss detail, and any hanging lights before you sign the PO, and we will confirm the fit in writing.
Sequencing the install into your build timeline
Here is the order we recommend for a new-build pole barn: slab poured and cured 28 days, electrical rough-in complete, walls closed, overhead door installed, then the car lift arrives. Doing it in that order means we can level anchors on a clean slab, plug the power unit into a permanent receptacle, and roll the vehicle in for a first-cycle test without stepping over drywall mud. Our northern Missouri install took one day on-site because everything was ready.
The failure mode we see most often is the buyer trying to install before the door goes in. It seems harmless — the lift is inside the building, right? Wrong. On install day we need the door opener, header, and floor all present so we can verify clearance dynamically, not on paper. If your builder tells you the door is delayed six weeks, delay the lift delivery too. We hold shipments free of charge when the build timeline slips, and it is far cheaper than a return trip.
What we bring on install day and what we need from you
Our install crew shows up with the lift, the hardware kit, a Hilti hammer drill for anchor holes, a laser level, torque wrenches, and a fresh set of anchors sized to the slab depth we confirmed on the phone. We do not bring: an electrician’s license (we plug into the receptacle you provide), a concrete saw for slab modifications, or a forklift to move the columns from your driveway to the install spot. If you are a shop owner with a forklift on-site, we love you. If you are a homeowner with two friends and a beer fridge, we bring pipe rollers and a come-along and it works out fine.
What we need from you: a cured slab, a working 220V receptacle in the right spot, clear floor space in the lift footprint, and an adult with a pickup title present to sign the commissioning paperwork.
