A car lift in a private collector’s garage is a different purchase than a car lift in a commercial shop, and a Cedar Falls collector who bought one from us a year ago has been generous about sharing what the first twelve months actually looked like. He stores five vehicles in rotation, does his own tire work, and wanted the ability to keep a car up on the lift for weeks at a time to double his storage footprint. This is his first-year story, from the day he called about a 30-by-40 pole building with a fresh concrete pour to the tire rotation he did last weekend, and what he would do differently on the next install.

Where the Build-Out Started
He called us before the concrete was poured, which is the right time to call. A 30-by-40 pole building with 12-foot side walls is a common footprint in eastern Iowa, and it is workable for a four-post car lift, but the details matter. He wanted 4.25 inches of concrete at 3,000 PSI minimum in the lift footprint, and he wanted the pour flat within a quarter inch across the runway area. We sent him the anchor pattern PDF from the manufacturer before the concrete crew showed up, and he handed it to them. That single decision saved him a core sample later. The rest of the shop got a four-inch pour, which is fine for parking but not ideal for anchor work, so he laid the lift geometry into the plan from the start rather than retrofitting it. Every good home-garage car lift install we do starts with concrete that was placed knowing the lift was coming.
Choosing a Four-Post for Storage
He briefly considered a two-post because the price is lower and the footprint is a little tighter, but the deciding factor was storage. A two-post car lift holds the vehicle by the frame, which means you cannot leave a car up on it for weeks at a time without stressing the pinch welds and putting continuous load on the arms. A four-post car lift holds the vehicle by the wheels on the runways, which is the same loading it sees on the ground. You can leave a car up on a four-post for months and the vehicle will be happier than in a driveway. For a collector rotating five cars through storage that is not a nice-to-have, it is the whole point of the purchase. We quoted him a 9,000 lb four-post with drip trays, a jack tray, and a rolling floor jack sized to the runway spacing. The setup covers every vehicle in his stable including the heaviest one.
Install Day and the First Cycle
Install took most of a Saturday. Freight arrived the day before on a semi with a lift gate, and he had a friend with a small forklift on standby to move the column boxes to the back of the building. Our crew set the columns, plumbed and squared the base, drilled anchors, ran hydraulic lines and the power unit, and cycled the lift ten times empty. Then we put his daily driver up and cycled it three times under load. That break-in matters because new seals shed a little material in the first week and any cable slack that is going to develop shows up in the first ten cycles. We handed him the manual, the ALI Gold cert, and a short punch list of things to check monthly. He walked us out at four in the afternoon with the lift already holding a car six feet in the air.
The First Real Job: Tire Rotation
His first solo job on the lift was a tire rotation on the storage rotation vehicle. On a four-post car lift with a rolling jack, tire rotation is quicker than any shop appointment. Drive the car onto the runways, raise the lift to comfortable height, roll the jack under the crossmember, lift one axle, swap the wheels, drop, move to the other axle. He timed it at about 22 minutes end to end for the first attempt, which included stopping to read the jack manual once. By the third rotation he was under 15 minutes. That is the moment most home-garage lift owners realize the car lift will pay for itself in convenience if not in dollars. He does his own tire work now on all five vehicles in the fleet, and he is spec’ing summer and winter sets around the fact that swapping them is trivial.
Storage Rotation Through an Iowa Winter
The second half of the year is where the storage use case earned its keep. Iowa winters push driveway cars into garages, and a two-car garage that becomes a four-car footprint with a lift is a real gain. He put the summer car up on the lift over Thanksgiving with the tires off the concrete, ran a battery tender, and put the winter driver underneath. That configuration held through March. In April he swapped, and the summer car came down with the same air pressure it went up with because the tires had never sat flat. Nothing surprising, but the first winter cycle is the one that confirms the purchase was worth it. He told us in April that the car lift had already changed how he thought about the fleet, and that is the sentence every home-garage lift customer eventually says out loud.
What He Would Do Differently Next Time
Two things. First, he would have run 220V and a compressed air line to the lift bay when the electrician was on site anyway, rather than adding them after the fact. He needed the 220V for the lift itself, which we handled, but he ended up wanting a second 220V circuit for a welder near the lift, and running it later cost more than doubling it during the original wire pull. Second, he would have specified a drip tray package from day one. He added drip trays six months in when he realized every winter car dripped brine and water onto the concrete under the runways. Adding drip trays after the fact means removing the vehicles from the lift, which is annoying. Small stuff. The lift itself he would buy again exactly the same.
