We install, service, and stock parts for every major lift brand across Iowa and the surrounding states, so we see the failures on both ends — the lift that got greased and inspected on schedule and lasted twenty-five years, and the one that got ignored until a cable snapped on a Friday afternoon with a customer’s truck in the air. The difference is almost never the brand. It is whether somebody spent a few minutes looking at the thing.

Start With the Cables — They Tell You Everything

On any two-post overhead or four-post lift, the equalizer cables are the single best indicator of overall health. On a two-post they keep the carriages synchronized; on a four-post they carry the load directly. Run a rag along the length of each one — carefully, with gloves — and feel for broken strands. A single popped wire that catches the cloth is called a fishhook, and it means the cable is on a countdown. Look at the sheaves too. If a pulley is worn oval, or if it does not spin freely when the lift is down and slack, it is chewing the cable every cycle and the replacement cable will fail early too.

Cable tension is the other half of the job. On a four-post, the runways should sit level within about an eighth of an inch front to rear and side to side. If one corner droops, adjust at the anchor nuts a half turn at a time and cycle the lift between adjustments so the slack redistributes. We have pulled twenty-year-old lifts out of Iowa dealerships where all four cables were original and still fine because somebody kept them tensioned and clean, and we have replaced two-year-old cables that were run loose and slapping. Among all the car lift maintenance tips we hand out, cable inspection is the one we would never skip — it is the failure that hurts people.

Hydraulic Fluid: Level, Type, and Cleanliness

The power unit reservoir is small — usually two to four gallons — and that means a minor leak becomes a starved pump fast. Check the level with the lift fully lowered, because a raised lift pulls fluid into the cylinders and will read low no matter what. Most manufacturers call for AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or in cold, unheated Iowa shops, ATF as an alternative if the manual permits it. Do not mix types and do not top off with whatever bucket is open on the bench. Contaminated fluid scores cylinder bores and kills seals, and a scored bore means a cylinder, not a seal kit.

Watch for the symptoms of a fluid problem before it becomes a repair. A lift that shudders or chatters on the way up is usually pulling air, either from a low reservoir or a loose suction fitting. A lift that drifts down overnight is either a leaking cylinder or a dirty check valve in the power unit. A lift that raises slow when the shop is cold and fine at noon is telling you the fluid is too heavy for the ambient temperature. Arm Restraints, Lock Pawls, and the Parts Nobody Looks At

Arm restraints are the small gear-and-pin assemblies at the base of each swing arm on a two-post lift. Their job is to keep an arm from rotating out from under a vehicle while it is raised. They wear, the teeth round off, and the pin stops engaging — and because the lift still goes up and down normally, nobody notices. Grab each arm at the pad and try to swing it while the lift is loaded a few inches off the ground. If it moves, that restraint is done. Replacement gears are inexpensive and the labor is under an hour per arm for most models.

The lock pawls are the same story. You should hear a clean, even series of clicks as the carriages rise, and both sides should engage audibly when you lower onto the locks. A lift that only clicks on one side is a lift that could drop one corner. Check the lock cables and springs while you are in there; on many Rotary and Challenger two-post columns the lock release cable stretches over time and holds the pawls partially retracted. Sliding blocks and carriage rollers also belong on this list — dry, worn slider blocks let a carriage rock in the column and accelerate everything else. These are the quiet items that turn a good set of car lift maintenance tips into an actual inspection routine.

Anchor Bolts and Concrete: Check the Torque Every Year

Every two-post lift in the field is held down by anchor bolts into a concrete slab, and those anchors loosen. Thermal cycling, side loading from off-center vehicles, and years of vibration back them off. Put a torque wrench on each one annually — most manufacturers specify somewhere in the 85 to 100 ft-lb range, so check your manual — and re-torque to spec. If a nut turns and turns without building torque, the anchor has pulled and needs to be relocated, not retightened.

Look at the concrete around the base plates too. Hairline cracking radiating from an anchor means the slab is working. Iowa shops built in the 1970s frequently have four-inch slabs, and a modern 12,000 lb two-post wants six inches of 3,000 PSI minimum with clean edges and no expansion joints under the base plate. If we come out to quote a lift and the slab is thin, we would rather cut and pour a footing pad than set a column on concrete that will spall in three years. Column plumb matters as well — a column that has drifted out of plumb loads the anchors in shear and puts uneven wear into the slider blocks and carriage.

Grease Points, Pivots, and Keeping Things Moving

Grease is cheap and dry pivots are expensive. On a two-post, hit the arm pivot pins, the extension slides inside each arm, and the sheave pins with a general-purpose lithium grease. On a four-post, the sheave axles and the cross-tube pivots need it. On a scissor or mid-rise, the pivot pins and the roller tracks. If an arm extension binds when you pull it out, pull the extension all the way, clean the old grease and grit out of the channel, and re-grease — a bound extension gets forced, and forced extensions bend.

The other half of keeping things moving is keeping things clean. Iowa road salt is brutal on lift hardware from November through April. Vehicles come in caked with brine, it drips onto columns, runways, and cylinder rods, and it eats plating. We tell shops to wipe down the exposed cylinder rod and the column interiors a few times each winter and hit the bare metal with a light oil. It is unglamorous and it doubles the service life of the components most likely to strand you. The Annual Inspection Requirement Most Shops Do Not Know About

ANSI/ALI ALOIM says every automotive lift in commercial service should be inspected annually by a qualified inspector, and it is not just a suggestion — it comes up in insurance audits, OSHA visits, and after any incident. The inspection covers structural welds, anchors, cables, locks, restraints, hydraulics, controls, and the labeling and operating instructions that are supposed to be on the lift. We handle these across Iowa and into neighboring states, and honestly, the report is worth as much as the sticker. It gives you a documented list of what to budget for next year instead of a surprise.

Between annual inspections, the practical rhythm we recommend is simple: a daily visual walk-around before the first vehicle, a monthly fifteen-minute check of cables, fluid, restraints, and locks, and a quarterly grease and torque pass. Write it down somewhere — a clipboard on the column works fine. When something fails on a documented lift, you know when it was last good, and that narrows the diagnosis fast. When Maintenance Stops Making Sense and Replacement Starts

There is a point where we tell people to stop spending money. A lift with a cracked structural weld, a pulled anchor pattern in bad concrete, obsolete parts with no source, or a discontinued power unit design can cost more to nurse along than to replace. Older inground lifts with unknown tank condition are the clearest case — environmental liability from a leaking buried tank dwarfs the cost of a modern surface-mount two-post. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your equipment sits on, because we would rather sell you the right thing once than sell you parts for a lost cause.

On the other hand, plenty of 1980s and 1990s Rotary and Challenger lifts are absolutely worth rebuilding. The structures were overbuilt, parts availability is still good, and a cylinder reseal, new cables, fresh restraints and a lock overhaul can put a lift back into another decade of service for a fraction of new equipment cost. That is the payoff of the car lift maintenance tips above — a well-kept lift is a rebuildable lift. A neglected one usually is not.
