First Year With a Four-Post Car Lift: An ALI Gold Ownership Story

Contact Us

A collector in southern Minnesota called us this past spring with the kind of question we love — he wanted a four-post car lift for his hobby garage but wanted to know exactly what “ALI Gold certified” meant before he wrote the check. He had heard the phrase in three showrooms and gotten three different answers. We spent 40 minutes on the phone walking him through it. Here is the first-year ownership story from that install, from spec sheet through his first oil change and fluid service on the new lift.

Every four-post we sell is ALI Gold certified and installed by our own crew — no drop-shipped units.

Why a southern Minnesota collector picked a four-post car lift

The collector had three vehicles he wanted to keep long-term — a 60s muscle car, a 90s sports car, and a modern daily driver — and about 1,200 square feet of insulated shop with 11-foot ceilings. A two-post would have let him work under any of the three, but a four-post would let him store one vehicle up high and park another underneath, doubling his usable floor. That is the classic collector math. We walked through capacity, drive-on runway length, wheelbase compatibility, and the option to add sliding jacks for wheels-off work later. He picked a 9,000-pound four-post from our ALI Gold list, standard height, with wide runways to fit his muscle car’s stance. That decision alone probably added two years to the shop’s usable life before he outgrows it. The car lift shipped freight to his address, we drove up, and we spent one day on the anchors, alignment, and safety-lock function test. Nothing exotic — just the right size unit installed the right way, which is what a first-year buyer needs more than any premium feature.

What ALI Gold certification actually verifies on a car lift

ALI stands for the Automotive Lift Institute. Its Gold Label is a third-party certification from ETL Intertek confirming a car lift has been tested against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard. That standard verifies structural strength, load holding, unequal loading tolerance, hydraulic pressure limits, safety-lock function, control response, and dozens of other real-world stress conditions. When a lift is ALI Gold certified, it means an outside lab has actually loaded that model to its rated capacity plus a safety margin and confirmed it did not fail. The certification is model-specific — you cannot just buy any Rotary and assume it has the label. It has to say ALI Gold on the plate, and the model has to be on the current ALI directory. We only sell ALI Gold units because the alternative — an uncertified import — is a lawsuit waiting to happen, and because the resale value of a certified unit is measurably higher when the owner eventually sells the shop or the collection. That is what the collector wanted written down before he sent the deposit, and that is what we delivered.

Installation day: what showed up on the semi

Four-post lifts ship in three main pieces — two runway assemblies, four column uprights, and a crossbeam/cable pack. Total shipping weight ran around 2,400 pounds. The semi met us at the shop and we forklifted the pallets in through the overhead door. Setup took two of our techs a full day. The runway alignment is the make-or-break step — if the runways are more than a quarter inch out of parallel, the lift binds under load and the cables wear unevenly. We use a laser level and a chalk line, not a tape measure. Anchors are 3/4-inch Hilti Kwik Bolt TZ2s into 4.25-inch concrete, torqued to 90 foot-pounds. Cables were pre-installed at the factory but we checked seating on every sheave before the first cycle. We ran the lift up and down empty five times, then loaded the collector’s daily driver and cycled it another three. The safety locks engaged clean on every position. That first-day commissioning is what every ALI Gold car lift install should look like.

The first oil change on the new lift

Six weeks after install the collector did his first oil change on the four-post. He called us afterward with two observations. First, drain pan clearance is different — the runways sit closer to the pan than a two-post’s arms do, so you angle the pan differently. Second, the height sweet spot for oil work is lower than most first-time owners set it. He was running the lift all the way up on his first change, which is fine but hard on his neck. We told him what we tell everyone: for oil changes on a four-post car lift, park it around 48 inches — high enough to walk under with the pan, low enough to keep your neck neutral. Filter access on his 60s muscle car was easy because the runways are further apart than a two-post’s arms. On the sports car he used a magnetic drain plug catcher we sell in the parts section. First fluid service done, no drama, no leaks. That is exactly how a first-year collector experience should go.

Fluid service tricks a four-post makes easy

Beyond engine oil, the four-post shines on transmission fluid, coolant flushes, and differential service — anything that involves draining a large amount into a large pan. The vehicle stays on its own wheels, weight distribution never changes, and you can leave it on the runway for a full 24-hour cool-down cycle if a coolant job needs one. Wheels-on work is a real advantage for owners doing brake fluid bleeds or ABS module service where you want the wheels turning freely without the suspension unloaded. The one job a four-post makes harder is anything involving pulling wheels — that is where the optional sliding jacks come in, and we spec them on almost every collector setup. For the southern Minnesota shop we added a pair of 4,500-pound rolling jacks about eight months in when he started swapping tires himself. That upgrade turned his car lift into a hybrid — four-post for storage and fluid work, jacks for tire and brake jobs.

Year-one wear items every owner should know

First-year wear items on a four-post are simple: cables, sheaves, and slack-cable safety switches. Cables want a visual inspection every 90 days for the first year — you are looking for broken wires (any single broken wire near a sheave means replace the cable), corrosion at end fittings, and slack. Sheaves want a wipe-down and a quick spin check to make sure nothing is dry or grinding. The slack-cable safety switch is the little trigger that stops the lift if a cable goes slack — test it once a quarter by lifting empty and pressing the switch by hand. Hydraulic fluid on year one usually does not need service, but the reservoir should get a visual level check monthly. That is it. A well-installed ALI Gold car lift does not need much in year one — most of the maintenance debt shows up in year three through five when cables and cylinder seals start showing their age. Our cable replacement guide and cylinder rebuild article walk through both.

What we sell to Iowa and Minnesota collectors

For collectors across Iowa and the southern Minnesota corridor we stock and install BendPak and Atlas four-post lifts for home garages and hobby shops. Standard capacities run 8,000, 9,000, and 12,000 pounds; runways come in narrow (car), standard, and wide (truck/lifted vehicle) configurations. We install every unit ourselves — no drop shipping to a homeowner and hoping they figure it out. Every unit we sell comes ALI Gold certified, with the certification plate on the column and the model number registered with ALI. For an average collector setup — 9,000-pound four-post, standard height, standard runway, installed with anchors and full commissioning — we deliver, install, test, and hand over the manual. If you are shopping in southern Minnesota, northern Iowa, or anywhere our crew regularly runs, call 800-674-9302 or click the store link above to see the four-post lineup.
