A restoration shop owner up on the Iowa Great Lakes emailed us last winter with a familiar setup. He had a 40 by 60 pole building, three project cars in various stages, and a growing side business restoring classic pickups for out-of-state customers. He needed a car lift and he wanted a decision tree, not a sales pitch. Start with budget, walk through slab and ceiling, land on configuration, and end with a specific model to quote. This article is that decision tree, applied to his shop and generalized so any restoration shop can follow the same path.

Step One: Budget the Whole Job, Not Just the Lift
Every car lift budget conversation should include the lift, freight, install labor, electrical work, any concrete work, first-year parts, and a small reserve for training and consumables. The lift itself is often only 60 to 70 percent of the total first-year outlay. For a restoration shop planning a single primary bay, budget the lift purchase, roughly 15 to 20 percent for freight and install, another 5 to 10 percent for electrical if a new circuit needs to be run, and a small reserve for any concrete work uncovered during the site survey. If the whole-job number lands within the owner’s capital budget, we move to step two. If not, we discuss financing at 12 months no interest and 90 days no payment, which lets the shop cover the lift out of restoration revenue while the equipment is already earning its keep.
Step Two: Confirm the Slab Will Hold a Lift
Restoration shops in pole buildings often have slabs that were poured for storage, not for a lift. The minimum slab spec for a 10,000 lb two-post car lift is 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete. For a 12,000 lb lift, it’s usually 4.75 inches. For a 4-post drive-on, it’s 4 inches minimum. If the slab is thinner than spec, or if it was poured without rebar, we saw-cut a lift pad and pour a reinforced footing under each column base. That pad is roughly 4 by 4 feet, 6 inches deep, tied into the surrounding slab with rebar dowels. It is not expensive relative to the lift, but it must be done before install day. On the Iowa Great Lakes job, the slab was 4 inches on the whole floor and the owner had no records of rebar. We drilled inspection cores, found no rebar, and quoted the pad pours as part of the install package.
Step Three: Check Ceiling Height Against the Configuration You Want
A restoration shop needs enough vertical clearance to lift a project truck all the way to full rise and still work under it. On a standard 10K two-post car lift, that means 12 to 13 feet of clearance minimum. On a low-ceiling variant, we can install in 11 to 11.5 feet, but full rise is reduced by roughly 6 inches, which matters if you’re working under a lifted crew-cab pickup. The owner had 14 feet at the peak but only 11 feet 4 inches at the truss chord on the outside walls. We placed the lift toward the center of the building where the truss height rose to 12 feet 8 inches, which gave us headroom for a standard two-post. Ceiling placement is a design decision that should happen before the concrete is checked, because moving the lift by 6 feet can change the slab requirement.
Step Four: Pick Two-Post or Four-Post Based on Work Style
A restoration shop that does teardown and long-term project work usually wants a four-post car lift as the primary. Reason: projects sit on the lift for weeks or months at a time, and a four-post handles static load better than a two-post. A restoration shop that does short-cycle mechanical work like transmission service, engine swaps, and exhaust replacement wants a two-post primary. The Iowa Great Lakes owner did both. His projects sat for months on jack stands anyway, so he didn’t need the lift for static storage. What he needed was full wheels-free access for transmission drops and driveline work. That pointed us at a 12,000 lb two-post asymmetric as the primary bay. Later, if his volume grows, we would add a four-post drive-on as a second bay for alignment and drive-over storage.
Step Five: Match Capacity to the Heaviest Vehicle You Expect
Capacity sizing on a restoration shop car lift should be based on the heaviest vehicle you expect in the next five years, not the heaviest you have today. Classic pickups get restored with modern drivetrains, which usually means heavier engines and heavier transmissions. A restored classic C10 with an LS swap and a 4L80E transmission can weigh 500 pounds more than the original. A restored classic bus or motorhome frame can weigh 8,000 to 10,000 pounds on its own. We recommend sizing at 12,000 lb minimum for any restoration shop that touches full-size pickups or classic trucks. On the Iowa Great Lakes shop, the owner had one classic square-body Suburban in the queue that was going to weigh close to 6,500 pounds after restoration. A 10K lift would have been technically legal but with a small margin. The 12K we recommended gave him breathing room for future projects.
Step Six: Transmission Service Configuration
Transmission service on a two-post car lift needs a transmission jack or a stand that reaches full lift height. A standard shop jack goes about 6 feet up. A telescoping transmission jack reaches 7 to 8 feet, which covers most two-post working heights on a classic pickup. If you plan to do a lot of transmission work, add a transmission jack to the initial equipment order rather than buying it later.
