A heavy-duty truck shop owner in northwest Iowa called us in the winter asking about car lift parts for a full hydraulic cylinder rebuild on his shop’s two-post. The lift was a Rotary SPOA88 from the late 2000s that had been leaking around the piston rod for six months, and he’d finally reached the point where he needed to either rebuild the cylinders or replace the lift. He also wanted a real cost breakdown before he made the decision — not a ballpark, but line-item pricing on the rebuild kit, seals, fluid, shop time, and comparable-lift replacement costs. This article is that cost breakdown, with real dollar ranges and the tradeoff logic we walked him through.

What’s inside a two-post hydraulic cylinder

A two-post cylinder is straightforward but every part matters. Working from the outside in: a steel barrel welded to a mounting flange, a piston rod with a chrome-plated surface, a piston head that separates the pressure side from the return side, and a rod-end seal cluster that keeps hydraulic fluid inside the cylinder as the rod extends and retracts. The rod-end cluster typically includes a wiper seal (keeps dirt out), a rod seal (keeps fluid in), and a bushing (guides the rod). Inside the piston head are the piston seal and the wear rings that keep the piston from scraping the barrel.

Rebuild kits from Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak all include those seal components plus a wear ring set and a spring for the check-valve on models that use one. What rebuild kits don’t include is the piston rod or the barrel. Those are structural components. If either is scored, pitted, or bent, the rebuild kit won’t save the cylinder and you need a full cylinder assembly instead. That distinction drives the cost breakdown. A seal-only rebuild is a few hundred dollars in car lift parts. A full cylinder replacement is a few thousand. Diagnosing which one you need is the first step, and we don’t quote a rebuild until we’ve inspected the rod visually.

Diagnosing the leak: seals or barrel damage

Our northwest Iowa caller sent us photos of both cylinders before we quoted anything. The photos showed a wet spot at the top of both rod-end clusters — classic rod-seal leak. The rods themselves appeared clean in the photos, with no visible scoring or pitting, but photos can lie. We asked him to extend the rods fully, wipe them dry with a lint-free rag, and inspect the chrome under a flashlight. If the chrome is intact and mirror-smooth, seals are the whole answer. If there are visible score lines or corrosion pits, the rod is compromised and a seal rebuild won’t hold for more than a few weeks.

His inspection came back clean. Both rods were smooth chrome, no pitting, no visible damage. That put us squarely in seal-rebuild territory. We then asked him to measure the rod diameter with calipers because rebuild kits are sized to specific rod diameters, and there are three common sizes across the two-post market (1.5″, 1.75″, and 2.0″). He measured 1.75″, which matched the OEM spec for his lift model. From there the car lift parts quote was straightforward: OEM Rotary rebuild kits, two of them, plus fluid to top off after the rebuild. Total quote for the parts alone was under $600. Shop labor to do the rebuild in-house — because he’s a heavy-duty truck shop with mechanics who work on hydraulics daily — was zero. That’s the ideal rebuild scenario.

Line-item car lift parts cost breakdown for a rebuild

Here’s the actual line-item breakdown for the northwest Iowa rebuild, with rounded numbers because prices shift. Two Rotary rebuild kits: roughly $250 each. One gallon of hydraulic fluid (Dexron III equivalent, the spec Rotary calls out): about $30. Shop supplies (lint-free rags, brake clean, thread sealant): under $50. Labor at a customer shop rate for two hours per cylinder: about $400 for the pair, but $0 in his case because his own mechanics did the work. Miscellaneous fittings and hose clamps in case something needed replacement on disassembly: $50 line item.

Total car lift parts cost, no labor: about $580. Total with labor at customer rates: about $980. That’s the honest range for a two-cylinder rebuild on a Rotary SPOA88 or comparable. Add another $200 if you decide to replace hoses at the same time (which we recommend if they’re original to a lift over five years old). Add another $150 if you need to replace the reservoir breather filter. And if the diagnosis had come back with rod damage instead of seal wear, add roughly $1,800-$2,400 per cylinder for a full cylinder replacement instead of a rebuild. That’s a five-times price difference between the two outcomes, which is why the pre-rebuild inspection matters so much.

Cost breakdown: replacement lift comparable

For comparison, a new Rotary SPOA10 (the current-model equivalent of his SPOA88) delivers to northwest Iowa in the mid five-figure range for the base lift, plus another few thousand for installation if he doesn’t do it himself. Add ALI Gold cert, factory power unit, and the standard accessories and you’re looking at close to $15,000 out the door for a shop with his infrastructure already in place. A used lift of similar quality from another closing-shop’s inventory could come in at half that, but you inherit whatever hidden wear the previous owner didn’t disclose. Our northwest Iowa customer put the math side-by-side. Rebuild cost him $580 in car lift parts and cost him one shop day of his own mechanics’ time. Replacement would have cost twenty-five times as much and cost him a full week of shop downtime for install. The rebuild bought him at least another five years of lift service, and probably closer to eight if his ongoing maintenance stays disciplined. That’s the honest tradeoff. Rebuild almost always wins the immediate cost battle. Replacement wins only when the cylinders can’t be saved, or when the lift itself is at end of useful life for other reasons (bent columns, cracked welds, obsolete ALI listing).

When rebuild wins and when replacement wins

Rebuild wins when the rods are clean, the barrels are undamaged, and the lift’s other components (cables, sheaves, columns, safety systems) are within service life. Rebuild also wins when the shop has hydraulic experience and doesn’t need to pay an outside tech to do the work. Rebuild wins in cash-constrained years and wins for shops that plan to sell the shop within a few years and don’t want to leave depreciable capital on the table.

Replacement wins when the rods are damaged, when the columns are compromised, or when ALI cert is important to the shop’s customer story and the current lift is no longer listed. Replacement wins when a shop is scaling up and needs higher capacity or newer features (upgraded controllers, integrated air lines, better arm geometry). Replacement wins when insurance carriers push for newer equipment. Our northwest Iowa customer isn’t in any of those situations. Rebuild was obviously the right answer, and the cost breakdown proved it before he even started. If you’re weighing the same decision, do the same math. List the actual car lift parts costs against the actual replacement costs, and then honestly evaluate whether the current lift has other end-of-life factors.

Northwest Iowa shop considerations

Shops in northwest Iowa have a couple of considerations that don’t apply everywhere. First, winter access. Parts shipping into the northwest corner slows down between January and March, and if you’re mid-rebuild during a blizzard week you can lose a full week to shipping delays. We recommend ordering rebuild parts a week before you plan to do the work, and keeping backup shipping options in mind. Second, cold-weather cylinder behavior. Shops that don’t heat their bays overnight see hydraulic fluid thicken in the winter, which puts extra stress on cylinder seals during the first cycle of the day. Cold-weather shops benefit from either heated bays or a lower-viscosity fluid spec.

Third, the parts supplier ecosystem in northwest Iowa is thinner than in the metro corridor. Fewer local shops mean fewer chances to borrow a rebuild kit from a neighbor or grab a fitting from a parts counter in town. That makes stocking spares more valuable. We tell every northwest Iowa customer to keep a small parts shelf with common wear items: a spare seal kit, a spare hose, a couple of common fittings, and a gallon of hydraulic fluid. That shelf covers 80 percent of urgent car lift parts needs and turns a two-week wait into a same-day fix.

What the rebuild timeline actually looks like

Two-cylinder rebuild in a working shop, if you know what you’re doing: half a day per cylinder. Our northwest Iowa customer scheduled it over a slow Wednesday-Thursday in mid-winter. Wednesday morning he pulled the passenger cylinder, disassembled it on his workbench, cleaned every component, replaced the seals and wear rings, reassembled with fresh fluid, and reinstalled. Wednesday afternoon he cycle-tested it twenty times under no load and confirmed no leaks. Thursday morning he did the driver-side cylinder the same way. Thursday afternoon he cycle-tested both under progressive load — first empty, then with a customer pickup on the pads, then with the pickup at full working height for two hours.

By Friday morning the lift was back in customer service and he was doing brake work on a farm truck. Total downtime: 40 hours. Total car lift parts cost: under $600. Total labor: his own mechanics, no outside billing. That’s the payoff of a well-planned rebuild on a lift that was otherwise sound. He’s told us since that he expects to do another rebuild in five to seven years and then start evaluating replacement. In the meantime the lift runs clean and the seals show no fresh leaks after four months. That’s a rebuild that worked. Not every rebuild does — some come back with weeping seals within weeks, which almost always means the barrel or the rod had unseen damage that the pre-inspection missed.
