Why Slab Thickness Comes Before Any Car Lift Parts Order

Every lift installer in Iowa will tell you the same thing: no combination of car lift parts fixes a slab that’s too thin. Most two post lifts in the 9,000 to 10,000 pound class need a minimum of four inches of properly cured concrete, and that number climbs for heavier duty four post or in-ground setups. Our Ankeny customer had an older detached garage poured decades ago for a couple of daily drivers, not anchor bolts rated for lift loads. When we cored his slab to check, we found it was closer to three and a half inches with no rebar mat, just wire mesh sitting near the surface.

Rebar resists cracking under the point loads a lift’s anchor bolts create far better than mesh, which is really there to control shrinkage cracking, not carry structural load. That pad is what let every other part on this lift — the cylinders, the cables, the arm pins — actually perform to spec instead of working against a foundation that couldn’t hold anchors tight.

Choosing the Right Cylinders and Cables for Restoration Work

Once the slab was right, the actual car lift parts decisions got easier. For his use case — pulling engines, dropping subframes, doing metal work that means the vehicle sits on the lift for days at a time — we steered him toward a two post configuration with symmetric arms and standard duty cylinders rather than anything asymmetric built for quick in-and-out service work. Restoration work rewards stability and reach over speed.

We also spent time on cable spec, because collectors who keep cars on a lift long-term put more cumulative cycles on the equalizer cables than a typical shop bay. Galvanized aircraft cable with proper swage fittings, sized to the lift’s exact model, matters more here than most owners realize — mismatched cable diameter is one of the most common comebacks we see on used lifts with no identification tag. We logged his lift’s model and serial number in our records before the first bolt went in, specifically so future cable, sheave, or hydraulic hose orders wouldn’t turn into guesswork.

The First Service Call: What Actually Wears In Year One

Ten months in, our Ankeny customer called for his first service visit, not because anything broke but because he wanted a checkup before winter storage season. That’s smart ownership. What we found was normal break-in wear: arm restraint pins with a little play, safety latch cable tension that had settled and needed adjustment, and hydraulic fluid that was due for its first change. This is the value of a proper slab and correct installation up front. When the foundation and the initial part selection are right, year one service calls are maintenance, not emergency repair. We specify a grid pattern with bars roughly twelve to eighteen inches on center, positioned in the lower-to-middle third of the slab depth, not laid on the ground before the pour. Anchor bolts for the lift columns need adequate edge distance from the slab perimeter and from each other, and that spacing has to be checked against the specific lift’s base plate pattern before the concrete truck ever shows up.

For our Ankeny collector, this meant the contractor poured a bay large enough that column spacing wasn’t fighting the slab edge. We walked the layout with him before the pour, marking anchor locations against the lift’s actual base plate template rather than a generic drawing. This kind of coordination between the installer and the concrete contractor is where a lot of DIY installs go wrong — someone pours a nice slab, then discovers the columns don’t fit the intended spacing without hitting an edge or a control joint. Getting this right the first time avoids ever needing structural remediation, which is far more expensive than any car lift parts order will ever be.

Storage-Specific Wear Patterns on Restoration Lifts

Vehicles that sit on a lift for extended restoration periods create different wear patterns than daily service use. Arm locks see fewer cycles but longer static loads, which can let hydraulic seals develop a slight set over time if the lift sits raised for weeks. We advise owners in this situation to cycle the lift down and back up periodically even during long project stretches, just to keep seals and cylinder surfaces from developing flat spots.

Our Ankeny customer runs two project cars through his bay in overlapping fashion, so the lift rarely sits idle for more than a few weeks at a stretch, which actually works in his favor. Where we do see problems is with collectors who buy a lift, park one car on it for a year of slow restoration, and never touch the controls. That static load concentrated on one point in the cylinder stroke is exactly when seals start to weep. A five-minute cycle-down-and-up once a month costs nothing and adds years to seal life, delaying the day any car lift parts need replacing at all.

Building a Parts Relationship Before You Need One

This matters more for collectors than most people realize, because restoration hobbyists often buy used equipment secondhand, sometimes missing tags, sometimes repainted, sometimes with a model plate that doesn’t match anything in a parts breakdown. Documenting your lift the day it’s installed — photos of the tag, model number, serial number, even arm and cylinder dimensions — turns a future parts search into a five-minute phone call instead of a weeks-long identification project. It’s the single easiest thing an owner can do to protect their investment.

What We’d Tell Any First-Year Lift Owner

If you’re a year into ownership and haven’t had a service check yet, get one before winter. If you’re still shopping, get your slab checked before you fall in love with a specific lift model, because the concrete decides what’s even possible in your bay. And whatever you buy, keep the paperwork — model number, serial number, install date — somewhere you’ll actually find it in five years.

Our Ankeny customer’s first year cost him a new slab pour he didn’t budget for, but it also meant zero surprises on the equipment side. That trade-off is almost always worth it. A lift is only as reliable as its weakest link, and for a lot of first-time owners, that weak link isn’t the arms or the cylinders — it’s four inches of concrete nobody thought to check.
