A swing arm or cylinder that physically threads onto your lift’s arm assembly may still be the wrong load rating, the wrong stroke length, or built for a different frame contact height. Myth #2: Every Two-Post Lift From the Same Era Uses Interchangeable Cylinders

In reality, even lifts built in the same production run can carry different cylinder assemblies depending on whether they were configured as the power column or the idler column. An idler column cylinder is not the same part as the power side cylinder, even on an identical-looking twin-post rack. We’ve fielded quote requests where a shop needed a rebuild-versus-replace comparison across five units and each one turned out to need a slightly different assembly once we cross-referenced serials.

Myth #3: Cable and Sheave Dimensions Are Universal Across Brands

Equalizer cables and sheaves are where we see the most mismatched orders. A shop will send us a lift’s overall dimensions expecting that to be enough to find the correct cable set, but cable length, thread end type, and sheave bore diameter vary even within a single manufacturer’s model lineup. We’ve worked cases where a lift had zero identifying tags and the customer wanted just car lift parts based on dimensions alone — no breakdown existed that matched the cable specs they measured, because the lift wasn’t what they assumed it was.

The fix is methodical: measure cable length end to end under slight tension, measure sheave outer diameter and bore, and photograph the safety latch mechanism and its own separate cable if your lift has one — those are often sold and specced independently from the main lift cables. Flow rate, reservoir capacity, and valve porting all have to match your specific lift’s hydraulic architecture, or you’ll get uneven lift speed between columns, which is exactly the kind of inconsistency that ruins alignment rack repeatability.
