Total cost is modest, well under a couple hundred dollars for the kit itself. The kits are packaged carefully because the seals must remain contamination-free until installation to work correctly and seat cleanly against the cylinder bore.
Compare that to the cost of a complete cylinder replacement, which runs into four figures easily and requires bleeding the entire hydraulic system, and the rebuild kit is dramatically the better path. A restoration tech might hold the same vehicle up for two days to weld a new floor pan into place. That is dramatically longer hold pressure on the rod seals. Multiply by hundreds of jobs over a decade and the cumulative fatigue on the seals becomes significant even under otherwise gentle conditions.
Metalwork also adds heat, spatter, and dust to the environment near the cylinder. Weld spatter that lands on a cylinder rod during the up cycle can be pulled past the rod wiper on the next down cycle and cause premature seal wear. Grinding dust settles everywhere and finds its way into hydraulic components over years of exposure. Restoration shops should clean the cylinder rods regularly, keep the rod wipers in good condition, and inspect the cylinder area at every regular service interval. Preventive Rebuild Cadence for a Restoration Lift

You avoid the surprise-downtime problem entirely and you keep the lift working through the middle of long builds instead of grinding to a halt at the wrong moment.
