The first-year story from install to first service
The lift went in over a long weekend in a converted machine shed just south of the Iowa line. Ceiling was a hair over eleven feet, the concrete pour was fresh 4,500 psi, and the electrical service was already sized for a compressor and a plasma cutter — so the four-post lived in a good home from day one. The collector rotated three vehicles on and off the lift through the winter: a numbers-matching muscle car, a driver-quality convertible, and a pickup used as a parts hauler.
By month ten he called with the first real service item — a slack cable and a locking-latch cam that wouldn’t release cleanly on the passenger side. That’s typical. The first year of a four-post is mostly break-in: cables stretch and reach steady tension around 60-90 lift cycles, and locking latches settle into their final geometry. Neither is a defect, but both mean the same thing: it’s time for a first-year inspection, an oil-and-filter change on the power unit, and a cable-tension adjustment. What ceiling height and door swing mean for parts access
People forget that ceiling height doesn’t just cap what fits under the lift — it also decides whether you can service the lift itself without dropping the columns. On this collector’s build, the eleven-foot ceiling meant we could pull a cable and re-string it from the top without dropping the crossbeam. On a ten-foot ceiling with the same four-post lift, the same job takes twice as long because you have to work through the beam end-caps from below.
Door swing matters for a related reason. When it’s time to replace a hydraulic hose or the power-unit valve block, you need clear line-of-sight to the rear column from the shop door. Overhead doors that roll straight up are easier than swing-out barn doors, because the door track doesn’t interfere with a ladder near the column. Cables and equalizer parts collectors actually wear out
On a four-post used mostly for storage, cables don’t break — they stretch. And stretch is a bigger problem than most owners realize, because the equalizer sheaves at the crossbeam are what actually keep the platform level. Stretched cables mean uneven cross-beam travel, which means the safety locks engage at different heights, which means one corner of the platform hangs half an inch lower than the others. On a stored car, that shows up as a suspension the owner doesn’t trust and a car that sits crooked for six months.
The fix is cheap if you catch it early. Hydraulic power unit and lowering-valve service
The power unit is the least-loved component on a storage lift, because it runs for maybe forty seconds a week and gets ignored the other six and a half days. That’s exactly why it fails at the worst possible moment. Ninety percent of power-unit failures we diagnose over the phone come down to one of three things: a lowering valve that’s stuck open from varnish in old fluid, a solenoid coil that’s cooked from a stuck contactor, or a filter that hasn’t been changed since install.
The maintenance answer is dead simple. Change the hydraulic fluid every three years even if it looks clean — condensation is invisible and corrosive. Cycle the lift full travel once a month even when no vehicle is on it, because sitting is worse than working. And keep a spare lowering-valve solenoid and a filter on the shelf; those two car lift parts are the difference between a Saturday repair and a two-week wait for freight. Sourcing car lift parts when there’s no brand tag
Every third call we take starts the same way: “I bought this lift used and there’s no ID plate on it.” That’s fine. Most lifts trace back to one of a handful of Asian OEMs even when the badge is missing, and dimensions plus a few photos tell the story faster than a serial number. We ask for four measurements: cable diameter and length, column width and height, crossbeam length, and the piston rod diameter at the cylinder. With those four numbers and a couple of clear photos of the sheaves and the power unit, we can usually pin down the family within two or three known builds.
From there, sourcing car lift parts is a matter of matching the wear item — cable, sheave, cylinder seal, hose, valve — to a compatible aftermarket. We don’t try to sell a badge-matched replacement when a generic will fit; we sell what works and stands up. If the lift is truly one-of-one and no aftermarket exists, we’ll tell you that too, and usually the answer is to replace the lift when the current one is at end-of-life rather than to keep it alive with custom-machined pieces.
Winter storage load and what stresses the lift
Storage lifts see a strange duty cycle: they hold the same weight for six months without moving, then get cycled hard for a weekend of spring maintenance. That pattern stresses two things the manufacturer’s manual doesn’t emphasize: seal fatigue in the cylinder and cable-lay in the sheave grooves. The cylinder seals dry out slightly when the piston sits at the same position for months, and the cables develop a memory in the grooves where they rest against the sheave under load.
The mitigation is to lower the lift to its lowest safety-lock position for long-term storage rather than parking it at working height. Weight on the safety latches is fine; keeping the cylinder extended and the cables under tension for six months is what accelerates the wear. If the storage plan is truly stationary from November to April, take the vehicle off, lower the lift to rest position, and inspect the cables at the sheaves before you load it back up. Keeping a collector spare-parts kit on the shelf
The best advice we give collectors on the Iowa-Missouri border and beyond is to build a small on-shelf kit before you need it.
