Why a third-generation Dubuque shop redid the front bay

When a Dubuque family garage we work with rebuilt their front bay, the grandson of the guy who started the place sat across from us and said what most third-gen owners eventually say: the old drive-on ramps are killing our backs, and we need real column lifts before another decade goes by. That’s the honest driver behind almost every upgrade we see. Suspension work is the tipping point. Once you’re pulling struts three times a week, the crouching, the jack stands, and the awkward angles turn into a labor cost that shows up on the schedule. Proper lifting equipment changes the math on every ticket that touches control arms, sway bars, coilovers, or shocks. Arm restraints — what they actually do

Arm restraints are the piece most owners never think about until we point at them during a walkthrough. Their job is simple: keep the lift arm from swinging out from under the vehicle once you’ve set the pads. Every certified lift on the market has some version of a restraint — typically a spring-loaded gear that drops into a fixed pin ring at the base of each arm. When the arm rotates, the gear ratchets over the pin ring; when the vehicle is lifted and weight settles, the gear locks the arm’s position. It’s mechanical, not electric, which is exactly why we trust it. On the Dubuque install, one of the older techs asked why the new equipment felt so much stiffer than their previous drive-on. That stiffness is the restraint doing its job. If you can rock a raised arm side to side by hand, the restraint is worn or fouled. That’s a same-day parts call to us, not a next-week problem. Restraints wear slowly, but they do wear, and pretending they don’t is how a vehicle ends up sideways.

Safety-cam engagement, tooth by tooth

The safety cam is different from the arm restraint, and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes we hear on service calls. The cam is the internal locking ladder in each column — that clunk you hear as the lift rises. Every four to six inches, a spring-loaded cam drops into a locking position, so if a hose fails or a cable stretches, the vehicle doesn’t come down on the tech. On a typical 10K two-post, you’ll count somewhere between 20 and 30 cam positions over the full stroke, depending on column height. When you lower, you release the cams by lifting the handle, then bleeding the hydraulic side. If the cams don’t release cleanly on both columns, stop. That’s a synchronization issue and it means one column is drifting ahead of the other. On used equipment, safety cam wear tells you almost everything about how the previous owner treated it. Rounded teeth, sloppy engagement, springs that don’t snap back — those are red flags we call out on every inspection.

Real car lift dimensions that fit an Iowa pole building

For the Dubuque shop’s suspension bay, the numbers we actually measured were column spread (about 133 inches between columns for a clearfloor design), column height (around 145 inches, which cleared their 12-foot side walls with room to spare), rise height (about 74 inches under the pads), and drive-thru width (about 100 inches inside the columns). Those figures matter because a car lift that can’t fit a Ford Super Duty won’t serve a shop that services both cars and half-tons. Three-stage front arms reached far enough for short wheelbases, and rear arms extended out for longer chassis. The shop’s concrete was 4 inches thick — the minimum most manufacturers spec — and we did a core sample to confirm before signing off. Ceiling clearance is where a lot of Iowa pole buildings surprise their owners. If your side walls are 12 feet but the truss chord drops to 11 feet, the truss is the number that matters. Suspension work — where lift design earns its keep

Suspension jobs are where a good two-post pays for itself fast. Struts, shocks, control arms, tie rods, ball joints, sway bar links — every one of those gets faster and safer with the wheels hanging free. A two-post with three-stage arms and swing arms that clear the rocker pinch weld gives you room to actually swing a torque wrench at the top strut nut. We hear from shops running four-post or scissor equipment that they end up needing rolling jacks for suspension, which adds cost and a second lifting device to the workflow. On a two-post, gravity is on your side. A tech we worked with in Dubuque said his shoulder pain dropped noticeably in the first month after the switch. Anecdote, not medicine — but repeated across every technician we know. If your bay is dedicated to alignment and general service, a scissor might beat a two-post. If suspension is a real part of your book, a two-post car lift is almost always the answer. Match capacity to the heaviest vehicle you’ll actually put on it, then add 20 percent for headroom.

Daily checks that keep restraints honest

We tell every shop we install for that the arm restraints and safety cams get a five-second visual every morning. It’s the cheapest maintenance in the business. Look at each arm — the restraint gear should be seated, the pin ring shouldn’t be chewed, and the spring should still snap the gear back into position when you lift and drop the arm by hand. On the safety cam side, listen for the clunk as the lift rises. If you hear it on one column and not the other, a cam has fouled and needs attention before another cycle. Once a month, wipe the columns down and shoot a light penetrating oil onto the cam pivot — not the tracks themselves, because dust sticks to grease. Once a year, we recommend a full service call: cable tension check, cylinder inspection, hydraulic fluid top-off, and equalization test.
