What Actually Fails on a Lift — and What Just Looks Broken

The single most common thing we find on service calls is a lift that is not broken at all in the mechanical sense. It is low on fluid, the breather is plugged, the down valve is gummed with old oil, or the power unit is starved because somebody topped it off with the wrong hydraulic fluid five years ago. A two-post that raises slowly, chatters, or drifts down overnight is usually telling you about fluid and seals, not about a failed structure. We check reservoir level, fluid condition, and the down valve screen before we touch anything else, because roughly a third of the calls we run end there.

The genuinely serious failures look different. Frayed or kinked equalizer cables, a cylinder weeping steadily down the barrel, cracked welds at an arm pivot or at the base of a column, elongated anchor holes, and carriage rollers worn flat are all things we will not band-aid. Those are the findings where the conversation shifts from a quick fix to a real repair plan or, occasionally, to replacement. A good diagnosis separates wear items from structural problems, and that distinction is the entire point of a professional visit. How We Diagnose a Lift on the First Visit

We show up with the model and serial number if you have it, because that determines everything downstream — cable lengths, cylinder bore, seal kit numbers, arm pin diameters. Then we run the lift empty through a full cycle and listen. Hydraulic noise, a whine that changes with load, a hesitation at a specific height, or a bang when the locks release each point somewhere different. We watch both carriages to see whether they stay level, which tells us about equalizer cable stretch and slack adjusters long before a cable visibly frays.

After the cycle test, we go hands-on. Anchors get checked with a torque wrench and inspected for hairline concrete cracking around the base plate. Locks get tested at every position, not just the one you normally use. Arm restraints, pins, pads, and adapters get pulled and looked at. Overhead lifts get the shutoff bar and hose routing inspected because a chafed hose above a customer’s roof is a problem waiting to happen. We finish by writing down what we found, what we fixed, what we recommend next, and what can wait. That written record matters more than people expect — it is what an insurance adjuster or an OSHA inspector will ask for, and it gives you a maintenance timeline instead of a surprise.

Cables, Cylinders, and Power Units: The Big Three Repairs

If we replace a major component on an Iowa lift, it is almost always one of three things. Equalizer cables on a two-post stretch, corrode where they sit in the base trough, and eventually fray at the sheave. We replace them as a set, never one side, and we reset the slack safety and lock timing afterward. On a four-post, cables carry the load, so a single broken strand is an immediate stop-work condition. We stock common Rotary and Challenger cable sets and can usually get less common lengths within a couple of days.

Cylinders are next. A cylinder that weeps at the rod usually needs a seal kit; a cylinder that is pitted, scored, or bent needs replacement, and trying to reseal a scored bore just buys you a few weeks. Power units are the third — motor windings, pump gears, and the check valve assembly all wear, and a unit that hums but will not build pressure is often a cheaper fix than people fear. Across all three, availability is the real variable. Brand Differences That Change the Repair

Not every lift repairs the same way. Rotary and Challenger commercial lifts, which make up most of what we service in Iowa shops and dealerships, have documented parts trees, standardized lock assemblies, and available factory components going back decades — a mid-1990s Rotary SPO can often be brought fully back to spec. That predictability is why we recommend them for shops that plan to keep equipment fifteen or twenty years.

Home-shop equipment from BendPak and Atlas is also well supported, with the caveat that many home installations were done by the owner and we spend part of the visit correcting anchor spacing, slab thickness issues, or an out-of-level install that has been quietly chewing up rollers. Where car lift repair gets genuinely difficult is with off-brand imports that arrived through a marketplace seller who no longer exists. No parts diagram, no serial plate, no cable length spec. We can still often help by measuring and cross-referencing to a comparable known unit, but we tell customers honestly when a lift is not economically repairable. Safety Rules We Do Not Bend

A lift is one of the few tools in a shop that can kill somebody instantly if it fails under load. That shapes how we handle car lift repair. We will not certify a lift with mismatched cables, missing arm restraints, non-original anchors, or locks that do not engage at every position. We will not weld a repair onto a structural member without manufacturer guidance, because a field weld on a column changes the load path in ways nobody can calculate on a shop floor.

We also insist on the annual inspection cadence that ANSI/ALI guidance calls for. Most shops that call us for emergency work have gone three or four years without an inspection, and the repair bill reflects that — worn parts cascade into other worn parts. A lift inspected every year catches a stretched cable at eighty percent of life instead of at failure, and the difference in cost is not close. If a lift in your shop is out of service right now, tag it, pull the keys or lock out the power, and keep vehicles off it until somebody qualified looks at it. That is not liability language; it is how people stay uninjured.

What a Repair Visit Costs and How We Quote It
