It depends on ratchet-bar mechanical locks versus hydraulic-release systems, how many lifts run in the bay, and how much downtime the shop can absorb if a lock ever hangs up mid-shift. Start With Duty Cycle, Not Price

The first branch in our decision tree isn’t the price tag — it’s how many times a day the car lift safety lock actually gets engaged and released. A racing team doing differential fluid changes might run a car up and down a dozen times in an afternoon between practice sessions. That kind of duty cycle chews through cheap ratchet mechanisms fast, especially if the crew is in a hurry and slams the release lever instead of easing it. For that use case, we steer shops toward a heavier ratchet-bar lock with a wider engagement tooth, or a hydraulic-release lock system that takes the guesswork out of manual actuation entirely.

Lower-volume shops — say, a satellite location doing occasional oil changes and inspections — can get by with a standard mechanical lock at a lower price point, because the wear pattern is completely different. We ask every caller how many vehicles go up per day before we even talk model numbers, because that single number changes the whole recommendation. Skipping this step is how shops end up either overpaying for capacity they don’t need or underbuying and burning out a lock within a year.

Two-Post Models: Mechanical Ratchet vs. Hydraulic Release

Most two-post lifts, including the Rotary SPO12 series we install regularly, use a spring-loaded mechanical ratchet bar as the primary car lift safety lock. It’s simple, it’s reliable, and when it’s adjusted correctly it engages every few inches on the way up. The tradeoff is that release requires a cable-actuated handle at each column, and if those cables stretch or fray, the lock can hang up — which is exactly the complaint we hear on service calls where a lift won’t release and a vehicle is stuck in the air.

Challenger’s commercial two-post models offer a similar mechanical setup but with a heavier-gauge bar for higher lifting capacities, which matters if the crew is working on anything beyond standard passenger cars. For shops that want to eliminate cable wear entirely, some configurations pair the mechanical lock with an auxiliary hydraulic assist that softens the release action. We spec that combination for high-cycle bays specifically because it cuts down on the binding we see when a lock is worked hard, day after day, without a break.

Four-Post and Inground: A Different Lock Geometry Entirely

Four-post lifts use a completely different car lift safety lock geometry — usually a pin-style lock that drops into slots along the runway at set height increments. We’ve serviced four-post units where one lock, out of four total, stopped releasing toward the bottom of the travel range after the lift was relocated in a shop. That’s almost always a cable or linkage adjustment issue introduced during the move, not a defect in the lock itself, but it illustrates why alignment matters as much as the lock design.

Inground lifts complicate things further because the lock release is often hydraulically actuated through a cylinder buried in the pit, and we’ve walked into shops where a previous installer or shop hand had zip-tied a lock release lever as a temporary fix that became permanent. That’s not a repair — that’s a safety lock that no longer functions as designed. If your inground lift’s release mechanism has ever been jury-rigged, it needs a proper cylinder replacement before another vehicle goes up on it.

Matching Lock Type to Your Actual Repair Mix

A shop specializing in differential fluid service and suspension work puts different stress on a lift than a general repair shop rotating tires all day. Differential work often means the vehicle sits at a working height for extended periods while fluid drains and refills, which means the car lift safety lock is under sustained load rather than quick cycling. That favors a lock design with a wide, flat engagement surface that distributes weight evenly rather than a narrow tooth that concentrates stress on one point.

If your bay mix also includes brake work or suspension teardown where technicians are actively pushing, pulling, and torquing on the vehicle while it’s elevated, we recommend erring toward the higher lifting capacity lock configuration even if the vehicles themselves are lighter passenger cars. The extra margin isn’t about weight — it’s about the dynamic loading a lock has to absorb when someone’s leaning a full body weight into a stuck bolt three feet off the ground.

Budget Tier One: Entry-Level Shops and Occasional Use

For a one- or two-bay shop near the Iowa-Missouri border doing occasional service work, an entry-level BendPak or Atlas home-garage-style lift with a standard mechanical car lift safety lock covers most needs at the lowest upfront cost. These units are built for lighter duty cycles and are a smart choice if you’re not running a lift more than a few times a day. The lock mechanism on these models is straightforward to inspect and adjust, which matters if you’re doing your own basic maintenance between our scheduled visits.

The tradeoff at this tier is capacity headroom. If your shop’s vehicle mix ever shifts toward trucks, larger SUVs, or race vehicles with aftermarket weight added, an entry-tier lift can get pushed to its rated limit faster than expected. We always ask about future plans, not just current inventory, before recommending a budget-tier lock configuration.

Budget Tier Two: Commercial-Grade for Daily High-Cycle Use

For shops running a lift dozens of times daily — which describes most of the crew-chief and race-prep shops we work with — a commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger two-post or four-post model with a reinforced lock assembly is worth the higher investment. These units are engineered for the kind of continuous engagement-and-release cycling that would prematurely wear a home-garage lock within a season.

We also recommend budgeting for an annual lock and cable inspection as part of this tier, not as an optional add-on. A commercial-grade car lift safety lock still needs the release cables checked for fraying, the ratchet teeth checked for wear, and the pivot points greased. Shops that skip this maintenance are the ones calling us mid-week because a lock suddenly won’t disengage and a customer’s vehicle is sitting stuck in the bay.
