A car lift spec comparison is the conversation most third-generation family garages skip and later wish they had not. In the Iowa-Illinois corridor we work a lot of shops that have run one or two aging lifts for 20 years and are finally replacing them, usually because a cable let go or a cylinder started weeping past the seals. When they call us, the question is always the same: which model do I actually need. This piece is the technical deep-dive we walk them through, with real dimensions, real capacities, and real headroom numbers pulled straight from the current install manuals for Rotary SPO series and Challenger CL series two-post car lifts.

Capacity and column height on the SPO10 versus CL10

The Rotary SPO10 and Challenger CL10 are the two most common 10,000-lb car lift models in Iowa-Illinois shops, and they compete head-to-head on paper. Both are ALI-certified at 10,000 lb evenly distributed with a maximum single-arm load of 5,000 lb. Both use a 2:1 cable-hydraulic drive with dual hydraulic cylinders and equalization cables. Overall column height on the SPO10 overhead is 145 inches, and the CL10 overhead is 144 inches. That one-inch difference does not matter for a bay with 13 feet of clear ceiling. It matters when the ceiling is tight.

Maximum lifting height at the pad, arms fully retracted, is 74 inches for the SPO10 and 73 inches for the CL10. Again, one inch. Where the specs diverge more meaningfully is minimum pad height, which is how low the arms drop to slide under a low-clearance vehicle. The SPO10 gets down to 3.75 inches at the pad, and the CL10 gets down to 3.5 inches. For a family garage that occasionally sees lowered classics or sports cars, that quarter inch is real. If your work is all trucks and SUVs, both are fine. Match the number to the lowest vehicle you will ever service.

Arm geometry and reach: Versymmetric versus asymmetric

Arm geometry is where the two brands make different design choices, and the choice matters more than the capacity number for most family garage work mixes. Rotary’s SPOA10 uses Versymmetric arm geometry, which combines symmetric and asymmetric reach in one arm design. The front arms fold into an asymmetric position for door-clearance and swing out to symmetric for long-wheelbase reach. Front arm reach ranges from 24 inches at minimum to 55 inches at maximum. Rear arm reach ranges from 34 inches to 65 inches. That combination handles a Miata and a Ram 3500 on the same lift.

Challenger’s CL10 uses a straight asymmetric arm set with slightly different numbers: front arms 24 to 51 inches, rear arms 38 to 60 inches. The shorter maximum reach on the front arms means the CL10 asymmetric is a better fit for a shop that sees mostly sedans and small SUVs and rarely a full-size crew cab. If your family garage mix leans heavily toward trucks, the SPOA10 Versymmetric is the better spec. If you see a broader mix with lots of daily-driver door-open work, the CL10 asymmetric has a slight edge on ergonomics. Neither car lift is wrong for a general garage. The mix decides.

Footprint and clearance between columns

Footprint dimensions matter when your bay is narrow, and a lot of older Iowa-Illinois corridor family garages are narrower than modern build-outs. The SPO10 has an outside column-to-column dimension of 141 inches (11 feet 9 inches) and an inside drive-through clearance of 111 inches (9 feet 3 inches). The CL10 overhead is nearly identical at 143 inches outside and 112 inches drive-through. Both need at least 12 feet of bay width to install safely with any working room, and 14 feet is more comfortable.

Baseplate versions of both models drop the drive-through clearance slightly because the connecting plate sits between the columns rather than above. Baseplate CL10 drive-through is 108 inches, and baseplate SPO10 is 109 inches. If you drive dually pickups through the bay, either baseplate configuration is going to be tight on mirror width. Fold the mirrors and go slow, or spec the overhead versions and enjoy the extra clearance. The dimensional differences between brands here are inside an inch or two, so pick on other criteria (arm geometry, warranty, service parts availability) rather than footprint alone. Nothing about the physical bay footprint should swing you between Rotary and Challenger at the 10K car lift level.

Power unit and cycle time under a real workload

Power unit spec is where family garage owners often overlook a meaningful difference. The Rotary SPO10 ships with a 2-HP power unit that cycles a full lift in approximately 45 seconds under load. The Challenger CL10 ships with a 2-HP power unit that cycles in approximately 50 seconds. On a single-lift day, five seconds does not matter. On a shop cycling one bay 30 or 40 times a day for brake service, that adds up to two or three minutes of cumulative cycle time. Not a deal-breaker, but real.

More important than raw cycle time is thermal behavior under repeat cycling. Both units have thermal cutouts that shut the motor off if it overheats. In our field experience, the Rotary unit runs slightly cooler under back-to-back cycles, which we think comes from the pump design and reservoir volume. The Challenger unit is more sensitive to ambient temperature, and in an un-heated Iowa-Illinois corridor bay in January it takes an extra minute to warm up on the first lift of the day. Neither of these differences change the buying decision for a family garage. They are worth knowing if you are picking between the two at spec-sheet level and the arm geometry is a tie. Cable and cylinder service life

Equalization cables and hydraulic cylinders are the two consumables on a two-post car lift, and both need to be replaced eventually. Rotary and Challenger both use 5/16 inch aircraft-quality braided cable, and both recommend annual visual inspection with replacement at 5 to 10 years depending on cycle count. Cable prices are similar between brands: a set of four cables runs a couple hundred dollars, and we stock both brands in our Ames warehouse. Cylinder rebuild kits are also both around a hundred dollars per side, and either cylinder is field-serviceable by a competent shop with basic tools.

Where the brands differ slightly is chain versus cable equalization design. Rotary uses a chain-over-sheave equalization system on some SPOA models that reduces cable stretch over time. Challenger uses cable-only on its CL series. In practice, the Rotary chain design gives longer service life between adjustments but costs more to replace when it does wear. Cable equalization is simpler to inspect and cheaper to service. For a family garage running one or two lifts, either system is fine, and the maintenance schedules are similar. Do not overthink this. Both brands are ALI-certified and both hold up for 20 years of family-garage service if you inspect the cables annually and change the hydraulic fluid at manufacturer intervals.

Warranty and parts availability in the Iowa-Illinois corridor

Rotary’s structural warranty is lifetime on columns and 5 years on cylinders and cables. Challenger’s structural warranty is 25 years on columns and 5 years on cylinders and cables. In practice, both companies stand behind their equipment through us, and we handle warranty claims on your behalf when something needs attention. Parts availability across the Iowa-Illinois corridor is better for Rotary because Rotary has a factory service center closer to our region and we stock more of their consumables in our own warehouse. Challenger parts we order in from Missouri, typically arriving in 2 to 3 days.

The reason we mention this is that if your third-generation family garage runs 60 miles from a paved road and cannot afford to wait a week for a cable set, Rotary is the safer buy from a service continuity standpoint. If you are in Davenport or the Quad Cities where next-day parts are easy, Challenger is a full-featured alternative and often costs a few hundred dollars less on the same class of car lift. Both are correct choices for the right shop.
