When a third-generation family shop in Iowa City called us to spec a replacement car lift for the tire bay, the owner did not want a pitch. He wanted numbers. His grandfather had bought the original Rotary in 1972, his father had run it until 2004, and he had gotten another 22 years out of it before the arms finally aged out. The question was simple: what does the next 20 years actually cost? This piece is our answer, with the dimensions, duty cycles, and line-item maintenance we track on every car lift we install across eastern Iowa.

What a 20-Year Ownership Window Actually Looks Like

A commercial car lift installed correctly in 2026 should still be cycling in 2046. The Rotary SPOA10 and Challenger CL10 platforms we sell today share bones with 1990s designs — same column profile, same carriage roller pack, same overhead cable/hydraulic architecture — and we still service those 1990s units in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City every month. Twenty years is not aspirational. It is the boring, expected outcome if you buy the right lift and change the fluid.

Over that window, the family shop we work with will cycle roughly 22,000 vehicles across each bay. That works out to about four lifts per open hour on a busy day, which is normal for a tire and general repair shop of that size. Understanding that number is the entire game. A hobbyist doing 200 cycles a year has completely different priorities than a shop doing 1,100 a month. The car lift you buy should match the duty cycle you actually plan to run.

Column Dimensions and Bay Fit

A standard clear-floor 2-post car lift has columns roughly 118 to 120 inches tall for standard overhead, or 145 to 168 inches for tall models. The columns sit 132 inches on-center (11 feet) for asymmetric arm designs and 141 inches on-center (11 feet 9 inches) for symmetric. Drive-through clearance between the columns runs 96 to 100 inches, which fits every passenger vehicle and any medium-duty truck up to about a Ford E-450.

For the Iowa City family shop, the original 1972 bay was framed at 14 feet ceiling height with 13-foot clear span between purlins. That gave us headroom for a modern tall-column model and the option to lift high enough that a tech could stand fully upright under the running board of a lifted Silverado. If you are building a new bay from scratch, we recommend 14 feet clear ceiling minimum. If you are shoehorning a lift into a 10-foot ceiling — as many Iowa City residential garages have — you need a low-ceiling model like the Rotary SPO10-500 (the LC variant) with an 11-foot column and a lower duty rating on lift height.

Real Duty Cycle and Motor Life

A hydraulic power unit is rated for a duty cycle, usually 25% to 30%. That means for every minute the motor runs (lifting), it should rest three to four minutes. A full lift cycle to 6 feet takes about 45 seconds. On a shop floor with a car up for 40 minutes of work, the pump is at 2% duty cycle for that vehicle, which is nothing. Even a tire shop doing 32 cars a day is only cycling the pump 24 minutes total across an eight-hour day.

Motor life at that duty cycle is typically 15,000 to 22,000 cycles before brush wear or seal aging warrants a rebuild. The good news is a rebuilt hydraulic power unit runs $700 to $1,100 and is a straightforward swap. Owners often replace the entire pump-and-reservoir unit at year 12 to 14 as preventive maintenance and get another decade out of the same car lift.

Fluid, Cables, and Annual Service Line Items

Hydraulic fluid should be checked monthly and changed every 24 months or 3,000 cycles, whichever comes first. Cost: $60 in AW32 or Dexron equivalent, plus 30 minutes labor. Cables (the equalizer cables on the overhead crossbar) should be inspected every 90 days and replaced every 3 to 5 years depending on duty. A pair of OEM cables for a Rotary or Challenger runs $180 to $340 depending on the exact model. We stock them. Skipping cable replacement is the single most common reason a car lift becomes unsafe.

Add an annual ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) inspection at roughly $175 to $275 per bay, which is legally required in commercial settings and highly recommended for home shops with employees. The inspector checks safety latches, cables, arm restraints, hoses, and the anchor bolts. If any of those fail inspection, address them the same week. The shop that skipped the 2019 inspection is the shop that had the vehicle come off the arms in 2022.

The Real 20-Year Total We Track

For a commercial-grade car lift running a family shop duty cycle, the 20-year total looks like this: purchase and install in the mid four-figures to low five-figures depending on model, plus 20 annual inspections, 8 or 9 fluid changes, 5 to 6 cable replacements, one full power-unit rebuild or swap, and one set of new safety hooks. Add it up and you land in a total cost of ownership range that pencils out to roughly the equivalent of $2 to $5 per lift cycle over the 22,000-cycle lifespan.

Compare that to the cost of not having a lift — one tech on the floor, one back injury per decade of manual work, one lost tire customer who went to the shop with the drive-on rack. The car lift pays for itself inside the first two years on any shop doing more than five vehicles a day. Every year after that is pure margin.

Where the Cheap Option Costs You Money

Import 2-post lifts from unbranded overseas suppliers land at 55% to 65% of the Rotary/Challenger price. On paper that saves you $3,000 to $5,000. Over 20 years it costs you more, and here is the math. Cheap columns use lighter-gauge steel and lower-grade lock ladders. We have seen the lock hooks yield on a 5-year-old off-brand lift under normal load. We have also stripped hydraulic ports out of a cast-aluminum manifold on a cheap unit because the bolt threads gave up.

Parts availability is the second hidden cost. When a Rotary cable breaks, we ship one same-day from stock. When an off-brand cable breaks and the importer is out of business, the shop is down until someone fabricates a replacement — that could be a week or more of lost revenue on a busy bay. If you are buying a car lift for two decades of service, spend the money once on a brand with a real parts network.

How the Iowa City Shop Made Their Call

The third-generation owner chose a Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric 2-post with an 11-foot column and standard overhead. Delivered, installed, and inspected for a total that was inside his father’s estimate from 15 years ago adjusted for inflation. First fluid change scheduled for 2028, first cable inspection in 90 days, ALI inspection booked for January. He expects to be lifting Iowa City Ford trucks off it in 2046, and given the family history, we agree.
