A Council Bluffs dealership service manager asked us for a technical deep-dive on car lift ownership economics: real dimensions, real anchor and slab specs, and a twenty-year total cost breakdown for a seasonal vehicle storage bay. Council Bluffs Dealership Storage Lift Requirements

The Council Bluffs dealership operates a service department with eight bays plus a detail and delivery area. Twice a year — spring and fall — they get requests from about 60 customers to store a second vehicle in-house, usually a classic car, a convertible, or a project vehicle that lives at the dealership between seasons. That storage capacity had been maxed out for three years, and the service manager was losing referral revenue every time he turned away a request. The plan was to add three stacking storage lifts in the back of the service building.

Real dimensions mattered from the start. The building had 14 feet of ceiling clear height under the truss chord, a slab thickness of 6 inches poured in 2008, and roof drainage that ran roughly overhead the target install location. We measured all three variables during a two-hour site visit, checked the electrical panel capacity, and confirmed the fire suppression sprinkler spacing would accommodate a car parked at 8 feet of platform height. Every one of those variables affects the specific lift model that can safely be installed, and skipping any single measurement can wreck an install.

Real Dimensions for Seasonal Vehicle Storage

A four-post storage lift needs three critical dimensions correct: platform width, platform length, and clear-height rise. Platform width has to accommodate the widest vehicle expected — for a dealership storing full-size SUVs, that is typically 80 to 84 inches between the outer runway edges. Platform length needs to be at least 175 inches for a full-size pickup, and preferably 190 inches for a heavy-duty long-bed. Clear-height rise is the vertical distance between the platform surface at full raise and the underside of the ceiling — you need at least 82 inches of clearance for the underside vehicle to allow foot traffic and safe walking room.

The dealership settled on a BendPak HD-9 series at 9,000 pounds capacity per lift, with 190-inch platforms and 82 inches of usable clear-height rise. That configuration accommodated a Ford F-150 SuperCrew parked over a Toyota Camry — the most common stacking pair for their customer base. For heavier vehicles like a Ford F-250 or Chevy Suburban 2500, the same platform footprint held up but required them to load the heaviest vehicle on the ground and the lighter one aloft. That is a common convention across every storage car lift install we do and worth planning for on day one.

Twenty-Year Total Cost of Ownership Breakdown

Twenty-year total cost of ownership on a properly installed four-post storage lift breaks into four buckets: acquisition, install, consumables and maintenance, and end-of-life. Acquisition is the biggest line item at roughly 55 to 65 percent of total. Install runs about 8 to 12 percent — anchor drilling, epoxy, electrical hookup, and commissioning. Consumables and maintenance over twenty years total about 15 to 20 percent, and end-of-life removal and disposal add another 5 to 10 percent depending on scrap steel prices at that future date.

On a per-year basis, a well-maintained four-post storage lift costs roughly 4 to 5 percent of the acquisition price in year one, drops to about 2 to 3 percent per year during years two through fifteen, and rises back to 5 to 8 percent per year during years sixteen through twenty as cables, sheaves, and cylinder seals reach end of service life. That is the shape of the curve for any car lift we sell in the storage category. Total lifetime cost, expressed as a multiple of purchase price, generally lands between 1.5 and 1.8 depending on how disciplined the owner is about preventive maintenance and how kindly the local climate treats the equipment.

Four-Post Storage Lift Structural Specs

The structural specs on a BendPak HD-9 storage lift are worth walking through in detail because they drive both the safety envelope and the maintenance schedule. Column height is 88 to 96 inches depending on configuration. Runway platform is a formed steel channel roughly 20 inches wide with a diamond-plate deck. Load capacity per column is 2,250 pounds — a total of 9,000 pounds across all four. Cable diameter is typically 3/8 inch on a 6×25 IWRC construction, rated for a minimum breaking strength of 15,100 pounds per cable.

Cable-to-load safety ratio is roughly 6.7 to 1 at full rated capacity, which meets ANSI/ALI standards with margin. Sheave diameter is 4 to 5 inches on a quality-tier storage lift, which extends cable service life significantly. Locking mechanisms are ratchet-and-pawl designs with a minimum of six lock positions between fully lowered and fully raised. Every one of those specs matters because it determines how the lift responds during a shock load, a partial cable failure, or a slow cable stretch over years of cycling. Understanding those numbers before you buy is the difference between owning a piece of equipment for twenty years and replacing it at year twelve.

Cable, Sheave, and Locking Mechanism Lifespan

Cable lifespan on a storage lift depends on cycling frequency more than raw age. A four-post lift that cycles 100 to 200 times per year — typical for seasonal storage — will see cable service life of 15 to 20 years before end-of-life replacement is required. A cable that cycles 1,000 times a year will need replacement around year eight to ten. Sheave lifespan is longer at 20 to 25 years, and locking mechanism pawls and ratchets typically last the full twenty-year service life if kept clean and lightly lubricated.

On the Council Bluffs dealership install, we projected roughly 120 cycles per year across three lifts, which puts cable replacement somewhere around year seventeen or eighteen. We wrote that projection into the maintenance schedule we handed the service manager. Sheave inspection is scheduled annually, and lock-pawl inspection is scheduled every six months. Total consumables cost over twenty years, spread across three lifts, penciled out to a modest per-lift annualized figure across the entire fleet. Concrete Load, Anchor Depth, and Ceiling Clearance

Concrete load is the single most-overlooked spec on a four-post storage lift install. Static load per column footprint under a fully loaded 9,000-pound lift is roughly 3,375 pounds distributed across an 8-inch by 8-inch base plate. That translates to about 52 pounds per square inch — well within the compressive strength of any 3,500 psi concrete slab. What matters is anchor pullout strength, and that depends on slab thickness and anchor embedment depth.

Minimum slab thickness for a 9,000-pound four-post storage car lift is 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete. Preferred is 5 to 6 inches for storage applications where the lift will hold a load for months at a time. Anchor embedment depth is 4 to 4.5 inches on a wedge-anchor system, and we always core-drill and epoxy the anchors on storage installs rather than using drop-in expansion anchors. That is a real difference in long-term hold strength and worth the extra thirty minutes per lift during install. Ceiling clearance requirements — 82 inches minimum, 90+ inches preferred — round out the physical envelope. The Council Bluffs install met all three specs comfortably.
