This checklist is the one we send anyone who calls with that question, and it is built around twenty-year total cost of ownership, not the pallet price on day one.

Step One: Weigh Your Heaviest Vehicle Honestly
The single most common mistake we see on farm-shop car lift purchases is under-sizing capacity by looking at curb weight on a dealer sticker. A three-quarter-ton diesel pickup that shows 7,800 pounds on the sticker weighs closer to 8,600 pounds with a full fuel tank, a plow prep package, and the toolbox and fuel transfer tank most farm trucks carry in the bed. Buy for what the vehicle actually weighs, loaded, on the day you need to service it.
For a farm shop that mixes light-duty pickups with heavier crew-cab diesels and the occasional service truck, we recommend a minimum 12,000 pound rating on a two-post, and 14,000 pounds is not overkill. The incremental cost between a 10K and 12K is modest at the equipment level and disappears entirely across twenty years of use. Buying too small means every service on the heaviest truck in the fleet becomes a stress event, and stressed steel eventually fails. The rating headroom is the cheapest insurance on the whole install.
Step Two: Look at Parts Availability, Not Just Purchase Price
A car lift is not a consumer appliance you replace when it breaks. It is a twenty-year capital tool, and the honest question to ask before buying is whether you will be able to get cables, sheaves, arm restraints, and hydraulic components for it in 2045. That is a legitimate concern with off-brand imports, where the importer may not exist in five years, let alone twenty. Step Three: Match Arm Configuration to the Work You Actually Do
Wheel bearing service on a solid front axle tractor is very different work from a passenger-vehicle brake job. The specific detail that matters is arm reach and pad style. For farm shop work that mixes traditional pickups with the occasional utility tractor or skid-steer, we recommend triple-telescoping asymmetric arms with adapter stacks that can reach frame-rail jacking points on tall vehicles. The arm reach spec should extend at least 44 inches from column center at maximum extension, and 22 inches at minimum for compact vehicles.
Pad style matters too. A rubber pad works for passenger vehicles. A polyurethane or steel-face adapter works better for frame-rail contact on trucks. For farm shop wheel bearing service specifically, we recommend a lift with adapter stacks that let you clear the tire from the pad location, which is a common problem on lifted trucks when the front tire lands right where the arm pad wants to sit. Step Four: Install Quality Determines Half of the Twenty-Year Cost
A well-built car lift installed poorly will need major service in five years. A mid-tier lift installed correctly will run twenty years with normal maintenance. The two install items that dominate long-term reliability are the anchor pattern and the column plumb. Anchors need to bite into sound concrete at full embedment depth, and columns need to sit within a quarter-inch of true plumb over the full column height.
The DIY install path is legitimate on a home-shop lift if you have the equipment and the patience to shim columns and verify anchor torque. It is a lot more common that a self-install ends up out of plumb by an inch or more, at which point the arm-swing geometry is wrong and the lift wears its own components at an accelerated rate. Step Five: Plan for Wheel Bearing Service Access Before You Buy
A specific farm-shop scenario worth thinking through in advance is wheel bearing service on the heaviest truck in your fleet. That job needs full clearance under the vehicle to swing a wheel off, and enough vertical space for a full arm swing plus a tire dolly. On a two-post, the arm envelope with a wheel pulled sweeps a wider arc than most people realize, and column-to-column spacing that is fine for basic maintenance can pinch a bearing job.
We recommend a column-to-column drive-through width of at least 108 inches (nine feet) for farm-shop use, which gives you room to walk a bearing race, a puller, and a torque wrench around the wheel hub without banging the column. Ceiling height for a wheel-off bearing job on a lifted truck should be at least 12 feet clear, which is not tall for a pole-barn shop but is worth verifying against your truss height before signing paperwork. A car lift that pinches your worst service job every time is one you resent for two decades.
Step Six: Warranty and Ongoing Support Matter More Than Discount
A lift that comes with a five-year structural warranty from a brand that will still be around to honor it is worth substantially more than a two-year warranty from an unknown importer. Rotary and Challenger both offer generous structural warranties and cylinder warranties on their commercial two-posts, and we back the install with a workmanship warranty of our own. Combined, that stack of coverage is real financial protection against the low-probability but high-cost failure modes.
The ongoing support side is subtler but often more valuable in the long run. When a cable set needs replacement in year seven, or a cylinder seal fails in year twelve, you want the phone number of an installer who knows your lift and can dispatch a tech with the right parts on the truck. Step Seven: What Twenty-Year Total Cost of Ownership Really Looks Like
When we walk a farm-shop customer through the actual twenty-year total for a mid-tier commercial two-post, the numbers usually surprise them in a good way. Purchase and install lands in one range on day one. Preventive maintenance across twenty years, done annually, adds a modest incremental cost. One cable set replacement around year seven or eight is a small line item. A cylinder seal service at year fifteen is another small line. Total across twenty years is typically less than a single major service on the lift you cannot get parts for.
The comparison against a five-year replacement cycle on a cheap import lift is not close. Buy right once, install right once, and the car lift becomes background infrastructure in your farm shop for the rest of your working life.
