A car lift purchase for an independent inspection shop on the Iowa-Missouri border came down to a straight question last quarter: does a small operation running annual state inspections plus general service work go with a 2-post or a 4-post, and which one costs less to own for two decades? We ran the side-by-side for the owner, who does roughly 1,200 state safety inspections a year plus another 800 general repair tickets. The answer surprised him, and it is not the answer most YouTube channels give, so we wrote it up in detail here for other shop owners running similar volumes in border-town Iowa and northern Missouri.

The Duty Cycle Question Nobody Asks First
Before you compare purchase price, look at what the lift is doing every day. An inspection shop lifts a car, walks around it for eight to twelve minutes, drops it, and pulls the next one in. That is a high cycle count, low dwell duty pattern. A general service shop lifts a car, works on it for one to four hours, then drops it. Lower cycle count, higher dwell. Most shops do both, but the ratio matters. This owner is 60 percent inspection, 40 percent service, so we ran the numbers both ways.
A 2-post car lift is faster to load and unload because the arms swing out of the way and you drive the car straight through. That saves twenty to thirty seconds per cycle. Multiply that by 1,200 inspections per year and you save six to ten hours annually just in cycle time. A 4-post is slower to align because the tires have to land on the runways, but it needs zero adapter positioning. For a mixed shop, the 2-post generally wins the cycle-time comparison.
Purchase Price and Install Cost Side by Side
A 10,000 lb ALI Gold clear-floor 2-post from a reputable manufacturer lands in the mid four figures for the lift itself. Install runs another mid-four-figures if the shop has a proper slab. Total delivered and installed is under $8,000 all in for a shop that pours a fresh 4-inch slab section under the columns. A comparable ALI Gold 9,000 lb 4-post lands closer to $6,000 for the lift, with a similar install cost, because the freestanding design does not require anchoring on new concrete. The price gap at purchase is small. Where the numbers move is in accessories. A 4-post needs rolling jacks to be useful for wheel-off service, and a good pair of rolling jacks adds a mid-three-figure line item. A 2-post is ready for wheel-off work out of the box. Add the rolling jacks to the 4-post budget and the two configurations end up within a few hundred dollars of each other at year zero.
Annual Maintenance and Parts Pipeline Costs
Annual inspection cost is roughly the same on both configurations if you use an ALI-certified inspector. A few hundred dollars per year covers the visit and small consumables like grease, hydraulic fluid, and lock pins. Cable replacement is the largest scheduled item on either lift, and both configurations use cables that we stock in Ames. A 2-post has two hydraulic cylinders and two equalizer cables. A 4-post has one cylinder and four lifting cables. Over twenty years, expect one full cable set replacement on the 2-post and one full set on the 4-post.
The 4-post is slightly cheaper to service because there is only one hydraulic cylinder to maintain and no arm restraint mechanism to inspect. The 2-post has four arm restraints, two cylinders, and a top or bottom cross-tube depending on clear-floor versus overhead. Over the twenty-year window, expect the 2-post to cost about a thousand dollars more in scheduled maintenance than the 4-post. On a per-cycle basis with this shop’s volume, that is negligible.
Where the 2-Post Wins Long-Term
The car lift most inspection shops in the Iowa-Missouri corridor end up buying is a 2-post, and the reason is not maintenance cost. It is throughput and floor space. A 2-post lets a tech access all four wheels, the exhaust, the frame, and the undercarriage from any angle without a runway in the way. State inspection includes tire tread depth, brake line integrity, exhaust condition, and steering component wear — every one of those checks is faster on a 2-post because nothing blocks sight lines.
The 2-post also gives you back roughly 20 square feet of shop floor when the car is up, because the arms fold in and the space under the vehicle is completely open. In a border-town shop where the building is fixed and the tech count is growing, that recovered floor space matters. The 4-post keeps the runways in place whether the car is up or down, so the footprint never shrinks.
Where the 4-Post Wins Long-Term
The 4-post wins in three specific scenarios. First, when the shop also stores vehicles overnight or over weekends — for example, if the inspection shop takes in customer cars on a Friday for Monday delivery. Second, when the shop takes in longer or heavier vehicles like fleet vans, dually trucks, or the occasional RV. Runways carry wheelbase and weight distribution better than a 2-post’s arm geometry. Third, when the tech doing the inspection is less experienced and has a tendency to misplace the 2-post arms — the runways are more forgiving.
None of those apply to a high-volume inspection shop, but all three might apply to a smaller rural garage that does inspection plus a lot of tire and fleet work. That is why we do not have a universal answer. The right car lift depends on the mix of work, not on which configuration has a better reputation online.
The Owner’s Actual Decision and Why
The Iowa-Missouri border shop ended up buying two car lifts: one 12,000 lb ALI Gold 2-post for the primary inspection bay and one 9,000 lb 4-post for the secondary service bay where longer jobs and vehicle storage happen. What Border-Town Shops Should Ask Before Signing

First, what is your annual ticket count and what percentage are inspections versus service? Second, what is your slab thickness and PSI rating, because both configurations have minimums we will not violate. Third, what is your ceiling height, because a clear-floor 2-post needs more headroom than an overhead 4-post. Fourth, what are your growth plans for the next five years — are you adding techs, adding bays, or adding heavier vehicles to the mix?
