For a dealership service manager in Ankeny weighing whether to buy a used or new car lift, the answer usually comes down to volume, warranty timing, and how much technical detail the buyer is willing to verify before signing. Ankeny Dealership Volume and the Real Cycle Load

A domestic-brand dealership service department in Ankeny running 25 to 40 ROs per day is cycling each service bay lift 50 to 80 times daily. That is roughly 15,000 to 20,000 cycles a year per bay. Over a ten-year equipment life, a single dealership car lift accumulates 150,000 to 200,000 duty cycles. That number is the anchor for every used-versus-new conversation we have with dealership service managers.

For comparison, an ALI-certified two-post lift from Rotary or Challenger is engineered for a design life well above 200,000 cycles under proper maintenance. That does not mean every lift makes it that far — a mistreated lift with skipped inspections falls apart at 80,000 cycles. And a well-maintained lift can run past 250,000 with only wear-item replacements along the way. But 200,000 is the honest planning number for a dealership environment. A used lift with 100,000 documented cycles behind it is halfway through its design life. A used lift with unknown cycle history is a gamble. We ask every used lift seller for a maintenance log, an annual inspection history, and a cycle counter reading where available. Absent that documentation, we discount the value assuming worst-case cycle usage.

New Two-Post Lift Dimensions and Specifications

A brand-new Rotary SPO12 — the workhorse 12,000 pound overhead two-post for domestic dealerships — has documented dimensions worth memorizing. Column height is 145 inches (about 12 feet). Overall width at the arms retracted is 132 inches. Drive-through clearance is 100 inches between the columns at floor level, closing to 96 inches at chest height because of the column taper. Full rise height is 74 inches from the pad top to the floor, giving the tech a working platform at shoulder level for a full-size pickup.

The Challenger CL12 runs similar numbers. Column height is 143 inches, drive-through 100 inches, rise 74 inches. Both lifts anchor into a slab measuring 12 feet by 6 feet minimum with 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete. Both use a 220-volt single-phase 30-amp electrical drop. Both include ALI Gold certification and a two-year manufacturer warranty on structural and hydraulic components. Weight class options branch from there. A 15,000 pound car lift adds column height and requires 6 inches of concrete under the anchors. A 20,000 pound heavy-duty two-post goes to 155 to 160 inches column height and typically requires 8 inches of concrete. If a dealership service manager plans to lift any HD dually with a service body, spec the 15K or 20K from the start.

What to Actually Check on a Used Lift

A used car lift walk-through is a specific list, not a general vibe check. Start with the ALI Gold label: is it present, legible, and current? Then the column welds: any cracks, any deformation, any signs of a prior collision? Then the arms: any straightness deviations under load, any restraint slop? Then the cables (on cable-equalized two-posts): any fraying, corrosion, or broken strands?

Move to the hydraulic system. Cylinder rods should be clean, straight, and free of pitting. Any oil weep around the seal packs means seals need replacement — not a deal-breaker, but a repair line item to price into the buy. Hydraulic hoses should be within their manufacturer service life (usually 5 to 7 years); expired hoses are a mandatory replacement. Then the safety systems. Every safety cam should engage audibly at every notch. Every arm restraint should hold under a manual pull test. The cam release cable should retract fully with normal handle pressure. Finally the anchors. Are the base plate bolts torqued to spec? Have they been overtorqued and stripped? A used lift with damaged anchor points is a lift that needs new anchor drilling in a new location — usually a deal-breaker unless the price accounts for it.

Refurb Cost Math: Anchors, Cables, Hoses

A used car lift that passes the visual walk-through still typically needs refurb before it goes back into daily dealership service. The predictable line items are hydraulic hoses, cable equalizers, cylinder seal kits, and arm restraint kits. Add in labor for the refurb, typically a full day for a two-person team, and the total refurb tab lands in the low four figures depending on which components need attention.

That number matters because it is the delta between the used-lift purchase price and the equivalent new-lift purchase price after taxes and install. If the used lift plus refurb comes within 20% of a new lift’s total delivered cost, the new lift is usually the smarter buy because of warranty timing and cycle life. The unpredictable line items are the ones that catch service managers by surprise: rusted anchor holes that need re-drilling in a different pattern, column welds that show fatigue and need manufacturer inspection, hydraulic power units that were replaced with off-spec parts by a prior owner. Any of those turns a modest refurb into a major one. Which is why we prefer to inspect any used lift a dealership is considering before the buy, not after.

Warranty Timing: New vs Used Manufacturer Coverage

A brand-new Rotary or Challenger car lift ships with a factory warranty — typically two years on structural components, one year on hydraulic and electrical components, and lifetime on the column welds. That warranty is a real dollar value: if a hydraulic cylinder fails at month 14 on a new lift, the manufacturer covers the part and pays a labor allowance. On a used lift, that same failure is entirely on the owner.

Some used lifts come with transferable warranty coverage from the original owner. This is more common on lifts less than three years old that were maintained through an authorized service network. If a dealership service manager can find a two-year-old lift with documented annual inspection and remaining transferable warranty, that is a genuine value buy. Most used lifts on the secondary market do not have transferable coverage, which means the buyer is on the hook from day one. For a dealership doing high-volume brake and rotor work, warranty timing matters a lot. A hydraulic failure that takes a bay out of service for a week during a busy season costs the shop tens of thousands in lost gross profit. Manufacturer warranty coverage often includes expedited parts shipment and priority service dispatch. Those are the things that reduce downtime when a failure happens.

Cycle Rate and Duty Life Expectancy

The design life of an ALI-certified two-post car lift is expressed in cycles, not years. A cycle is one full rise-and-fall event under load. Manufacturers rate their commercial-duty lifts for 200,000 to 250,000 cycles under maintained service. Home-garage lifts are rated much lower — typically 50,000 to 75,000 cycles — because the duty expectation is different.

For a dealership environment, only commercial-duty ALI-certified lifts should ever be in the conversation. Home-garage or light-commercial units cannot sustain the daily cycle load. That eliminates a big chunk of the used-lift market: anything that came out of a private garage or a low-volume specialty shop is not a candidate for a high-volume Ankeny service bay. Within the commercial-duty category, cycle life comes down to maintenance. A lift with a documented annual inspection history and clean maintenance log will hit its design cycle number. When Used Makes Sense (and When It Does Not)

Used makes sense when the price delta versus new is at least 40% after refurb, the seller has documented maintenance history, and the lift model still has manufacturer parts support for another decade. It also makes sense as a stopgap for a service manager who needs a lift immediately to cover a broken bay while a new-lift order is in production. Used lifts move on shorter lead times than new lifts in most cases.

Used does not make sense when the dealership is standing up a new bay from scratch. In that scenario, the incremental cost of a new lift is a small fraction of the total build-out, and the warranty and cycle-life advantages are worth every dollar. It also does not make sense when the used candidate has unknown history: no inspection records, no maintenance log, no original ownership chain. Buying blind on a life-safety piece of equipment is not a decision a service manager should carry into a five-year budget cycle.
