Rated capacity is the maximum total vehicle weight the lift is certified to raise, and it is not a suggestion or a safety margin you get to eat into. Manufacturers build in engineering safety factors on the structure and the cables, but those factors exist to handle fatigue, shock loading, and decades of cycles, not to let you sneak a 12,000 lb dually onto a 10K lift. The moment you exceed the plate rating you’re outside the ALI certification, outside the warranty, and outside anything an insurance adjuster wants to hear about.
The other number people miss is per-arm or per-column capacity. On a two-post, total capacity is typically split evenly — a 12,000 lb lift means 3,000 lb per arm. For a general repair shop that does mostly commuter work and light trucks, it’s the right buy and there’s no shame in it. Where 10K falls apart is the heavy-duty pickup, and in rural Iowa those aren’t rare — they’re the tow vehicle, the grain-cart puller, and the daily driver. Concrete, Ceiling, and Anchoring Constraints You Can’t Ignore
Capacity is not just a lift spec — it’s a building spec. Every two-post we install transfers its entire load into a handful of anchor bolts and the slab under them. Most manufacturers call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10K lift, and heavier ratings push that to five or six inches with tighter reinforcement and edge-distance requirements. Iowa has plenty of older garages with cracked, thin, or unreinforced slabs poured decades ago over questionable base, and no amount of lift capacity fixes a bad pour. We core-test when there’s any doubt, and we’ve told more than one customer to budget for a saw-cut footing pad before we’d hang steel in their bay.
Ceiling height caps you too. A clear-floor two-post rated for heavy trucks needs enough overhead for the columns plus the crossbar plus the raised vehicle plus the overhead shutoff bar. That makes them forgiving with unusual loads — long-wheelbase trucks, cars with modified rockers, anything you’d rather not touch with an arm pad. Home-storage four-posts commonly run 7,000 to 9,000 lb, service four-posts run 12,000 to 18,000, and heavy-duty models go well beyond. Just be aware that rated capacity on a four-post usually assumes a maximum axle load too, not just a total.
Mid-rise and low-rise scissor lifts typically top out between 6,000 and 9,000 lb and are built for tire, brake, and body work rather than full driveline service — check both capacity and lifting-point footprint, because a short scissor pad set can’t safely reach the pinch welds on a long truck. Mobile column lifts are the other extreme: sold in sets of four (or six), each column carries its own rating, so four 18,000 lb columns give you 72,000 lb total for buses, RVs, and fire apparatus. If your work spans a bus one day and a Civic the next, the honest answer usually isn’t one lift — it’s two different tools in two bays. Warning Signs You Bought Under Capacity
Lifts tell you when they’re unhappy, and shops learn to ignore the symptoms. The first sign is slow or labored raising, especially in the last twelve inches of travel — that’s the hydraulic system working near relief pressure. The second is arm or runway deflection you can see, a visible bow under load that wasn’t there when the lift was new. Third is chatter, popping, or uneven rise between columns, which on a two-post often means the equalization cables are stretching under repeated overload. Fourth is any hesitation to lock, or locks that won’t engage evenly on both sides.
