A lot of shop owners assume certification is a one-time thing that happens when the lift is manufactured. That’s only half true. The lift itself is designed and built to meet ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards, but the certified lift status on your shop floor depends on proper installation, anchoring, and ongoing inspection. We’ve walked into Urbandale shops where the lift was a genuinely good unit — a Rotary SPO12 or similar — but it had never been anchored to spec, or the arms had been swapped from a different model. That equipment is not a certified lift no matter how good the brand name on the column is.

We also document everything with photos and a written report tied to the lift’s serial number, so the shop has a paper trail if an insurance company or a customer ever asks. This is especially important for shops that get audited by their insurance carrier or work with fleet accounts that require proof of certified lift status before they’ll bring vehicles in. A thorough walkthrough usually takes under an hour per lift, and it either confirms the equipment is good to go or gives the shop a clear, specific list of what needs to be fixed.

Common Certification Failures We See in Iowa Shops

That means daily visual checks by techs, a documented quarterly inspection by a manager, and a full professional walkthrough at least once a year — more often for high-cycle shops running general daily maintenance work back-to-back.

When a shop can hand an inspector or an insurance auditor a complete history, the certified lift conversation is quick and painless. When they can’t, it turns into a much longer process.
