This is the more common setup we install for smaller footprints, and it tends to work better for shops mixing oil changes with tire rotations or brake work, since technicians can move between bays without walking the full length of the building. Parallel bays also make it easier to run a single air line and fluid reservoir system down the center aisle, cutting installation cost.

The downside shows up during busy hours — if both bays are running and a third car needs to wait, there’s often nowhere to stage it without blocking the entrance. The lower overall lift height compared to some heavier-duty two-post models also means techs aren’t reaching as high to release the arms, which reduces fatigue over a long shift. For a fluid-service operation, that ergonomic detail adds up over a full week of oil changes.

Overhead Clearance and Ceiling Height Considerations

One thing shops in older Cedar Rapids buildings run into is ceiling clearance. A lot of these fluid-service locations were converted from older service stations or retail spaces never designed with a lift in mind. Each Challenger 10K lift needs its own dedicated circuit sized to the power unit’s motor draw — daisy-chaining two lifts off one breaker is a common shortcut that trips circuits during peak hours, usually right when you’re busiest. We spec separate runs for every install, even when it costs a bit more upfront.

Air line placement matters too if you’re running impact tools or air-assisted fluid evacuation at each station. Running the lines overhead rather than through the floor keeps them out of the way of foot traffic and rolling carts, and it’s easier to service if a line ever needs replacing. We route these based on where the technician will actually be standing during a typical oil-change cycle, not just the shortest distance from the compressor.

Staging Area and Waiting Customer Flow

A layout that only accounts for the lifts themselves misses half the picture in a customer-facing quick-lube shop. Where do people wait? Where does the write-up desk sit relative to the bay doors? We’ve seen Cedar Rapids shops with a technically perfect Challenger 10K lift installation that still feels chaotic because customers are standing in the same walkway techs use to move between vehicles.

Ideally the office or waiting area has a sightline into the bay without putting customers in the traffic path.
