If you run a farm shop anywhere around the Iowa Great Lakes and you’re finally ready to stop crawling under trucks on ramps, a challenger 10k lift is probably at the top of your list — but before you spend a dollar, you need to know what’s under your feet. We’ve walked into too many pole buildings around Okoboji, Spirit Lake, and Spencer where the slab looked fine until we pulled out the tape measure and the rebar scanner. Why Slab Thickness Matters More Than the Lift Spec Sheet

Every challenger 10k lift ships with an anchor bolt pattern and a minimum slab thickness requirement, usually 4 inches of properly cured concrete at a minimum PSI rating — but that’s the floor, not the target. Rural shops built in the 80s and 90s often poured a 4-inch slab because that’s what the pole building kit called for, with zero thought given to a future two post lift. When we’re quoting a challenger 10k lift for a shop out toward Milford or Arnolds Park, the first question we ask isn’t about bay width. It’s how old the slab is and whether anyone kept the original pour records.

We ask every farm shop owner the same question before we quote equipment: do you have any paperwork from the original pour, even a handwritten note from the contractor? Most don’t, and that’s fine — it just means we test in place. For driveline and exhaust work specifically, where techs are often standing under the vehicle for extended stretches with the lift at full height, we don’t cut corners on this step. Exhaust and driveline jobs mean you need clear space under the vehicle, unobstructed swing arm reach, and enough overhead height to actually work standing up rather than hunched. We spec column height and arm reach based on the actual truck lineup in your shop — a fleet running mostly 3/4-ton pickups and grain trucks needs different arm geometry than a shop servicing smaller service vehicles.

The other overlooked factor is runway clearance to driveshafts and exhaust systems when the arms are set. Some lift configurations put the cross tube or arm mounting closer to the middle of the vehicle than driveline work wants. We walk through your actual repair mix before recommending column height and arm length, because the right challenger 10k lift for one shop’s exhaust bay isn’t always right for the next. Anchor Bolt Pull Testing Before You Trust It

Every reputable installer pull-tests anchors after setting a two post lift, and it should be a non-negotiable line item in your installation quote. This isn’t paperwork theater. Pull testing verifies the actual holding strength of every anchor bolt at the torque spec the manufacturer requires, and it catches slab problems that visual inspection alone will miss. We’ve had anchors pass torque but fail pull test in slabs that looked completely normal on the surface.

If a contractor quotes you a challenger 10k lift installation without mentioning pull testing, ask why. It takes an extra hour and it’s the difference between a lift that’s certified safe and one that’s a guess. For farm shops especially, where the same crew might use the lift daily for years without a second thought, that hour of testing up front buys peace of mind for the life of the equipment.

What a Pre-Purchase Slab Checklist Actually Looks Like

Before you commit to a challenger 10k lift, walk your bay with this list: measure actual slab thickness at multiple points, not just one; check for visible cracking anywhere within eight feet of your planned lift footprint; confirm reinforcement type if any records exist; check overhead clearance including any doors, joists, or lighting; and measure bay width against the lift’s full footprint with arms extended. Rural shops sometimes discover mid-quote that a support post or feed line runs exactly where a column needs to go.

The most common fix is a localized reinforced pad poured specifically for the lift footprint, tied into the existing slab or isolated depending on soil conditions. This adds cost and a curing wait, typically two to four weeks depending on weather, but it’s far cheaper than dealing with a failed anchor down the road.
