Asymmetric configurations shift the columns back slightly so the front arms are shorter and the rear arms are longer, which opens up door swing on both sides — something restoration shops care about a lot more than a typical tire shop, since you’re getting in and out of these cars constantly to check panel gaps and fitment.

For a shop doing heavy metal work on trucks or classic cars with long doors, we lean toward asymmetric setups because the extra door clearance means you’re not squeezing sideways past an open door every time you check your work. But asymmetric arms also mean slightly more careful arm placement to keep the car centered, so there’s a small learning curve for techs used to symmetric lifts.
