What the Challenger CL12A Actually Is
The CL12A is a 12,000 lb capacity asymmetric two-post lift. The “A” is asymmetric — the columns are rotated so the doors of the vehicle clear the column when you open them. Two columns, cable equalization, hydraulic power unit, ALI Gold Label certified. Standard column height around 12 feet with taller extension options for shops with the ceiling for it.
Where the Challenger CL12A earns the extra money over the CL10 is capacity margin. You are not just adding 2,000 pounds — you are adding beefier arms, thicker gussets, larger cylinders, and a heavier cable system. When you put a 9,500 lb dually on a 10K lift you are right at the limit. When you put that same truck on a CL12A you are well inside the envelope, and everything runs cooler and lasts longer.
Who Steps Up from a 10K to a 12K
Diesel shops, truck accessory installers, upfitter shops, and rural repair shops that work on farm pickups. If half of your bay time is spent on 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks, the 12K is the right lift. If you occasionally see a big truck but mostly do cars and half-tons, a 10K CL10 is still the sensible choice — do not overspend for capacity you rarely touch.
We also see the CL12A go into fleet shops that service medium pickups and light service trucks. And we see it in independent shops that took on a diesel repair contract with a local ag customer and suddenly needed real capacity. Asymmetric Design in the CL12A
Asymmetric means the columns are rotated 30 degrees so that when the vehicle rolls in, the driver’s door and passenger door both clear the column when opened. The arms are then set so that about 70% of the vehicle weight sits behind the columns and 30% sits in front. This layout matters for daily shop workflow — you can get in and out of the vehicle without walking around the column every time.
The trade-off with asymmetric geometry is that the vehicle has to be positioned correctly at drive-on. Pull too far forward or too far back and the arms will not reach the recommended lift points. This is why some shops keep floor markings on the concrete. It is a minor thing, but new techs sometimes need a couple of weeks to get the muscle memory.
Ceiling and Bay Requirements
Ceiling clearance for the Challenger CL12A in its standard configuration is about 12 feet 2 inches to the top of the column, plus vehicle height, plus lift travel. In a normal 14-foot ceiling you can lift a passenger car or half-ton pickup all the way up. Larger trucks or extensions eat into that clearance fast.
Concrete has to be 4 inches at 3,000 PSI minimum, same as the CL10. Bay width wants 12 feet clear between columns, and enough length that arms swing fully both fore and aft. Adapters, Truck Adapters, and Extensions
Every 2-post lift needs the right adapters for the vehicles you are lifting. Standard pads work for most cars and light trucks. For lifted trucks, cargo vans, and frame-on-body vehicles you often want tall truck adapters — stackable rubber or steel blocks that raise the lift point to reach the frame. The CL12A ships with a basic pad set; taller adapters are an add-on.
Column extensions are the other common add-on. 2-foot extensions are the most common in Iowa; 4-foot and 6-foot are ordered when the shop has a high ceiling and lifts a lot of tall vehicles. You have to order extensions with the lift — you cannot bolt them on aftermarket without changing the shutoff geometry.
CL12A vs Rotary 12K Options
The closest Rotary comparable to the CL12A is the Rotary SPOA10 in its 12K trim, or the higher-capacity Rotary SPOA12. Both brands make a solid 12K asymmetric 2-post. Performance is close; the differences are in arm restraint mechanism design, cable routing, and how the shop’s tech feels about the two brands.

Order to install runs about three to five weeks in most cases — deposit takes the crate off the shelf, balance is due at install.
