Low hydraulic fluid, a loose electrical connection at the motor, a dirty filter, or a worn locking pawl often masquerade as much bigger problems. Before assuming you need a new hydraulic pump or cylinder, physically check fluid level, inspect wiring at the power unit, and confirm the arm restraints and locks are functioning correctly. This step alone resolves a surprising number of service calls we get from Iowa shops.

We also recommend checking anything with moving mechanical contact first — safety locks, latches, cables, and pulleys — because these wear gradually and give visible clues like fraying, corrosion, or uneven wear patterns. Hydraulic components tend to fail more suddenly and dramatically, so if you’re not seeing a leak or hearing a pump strain, don’t jump there first.

Isolate Hydraulic vs. Electrical vs. Mechanical

Hydraulic issues usually show up as slow operation, drift, or a lift that struggles under load but sounds normal. Testing each system independently matters. Run the motor with the lift unloaded and listen — a straining motor with no fluid movement points at the pump or a stuck valve. Reading the Hydraulic System Correctly

Hydraulic failures are the most common reason for a Challenger lift service call, and they’re also the easiest to misdiagnose. A weeping cylinder seal looks similar to a failing hose fitting from a few feet away, but they’re fixed completely differently. Get close, wipe surfaces clean, and cycle the lift slowly to watch exactly where fluid appears first. If it’s at a fitting, it’s often just a tightening or O-ring fix. If it’s along the cylinder barrel itself, you’re likely looking at a seal kit or full cylinder replacement.

Pressure loss under load without visible leaking usually points to the control valve or check valve rather than the cylinder. This is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed issues we see, because shops assume any drift means cylinder failure. A control valve is a far cheaper and faster fix, so confirming this before ordering saves real money.

Electrical and Control Box Troubleshooting

When a Challenger lift won’t respond to the up button at all, the diagnosis path shifts to the control box and motor. Check the obvious first: is the unit getting power, is the breaker tripped, is the up/down switch physically making contact. From there, a multimeter at the motor terminals tells you whether power is reaching the motor or stopping somewhere in the control box. If the motor hums but doesn’t turn, that’s usually a capacitor or a seized pump, not a control box problem at all.

Intermittent electrical faults are trickier — a lift that works sometimes but not others often has a loose connection vibrating in and out of contact, or a pressure switch that’s failing gradually. These require patience and a process of elimination rather than a single test, but they’re rarely solved by replacing the whole control box on the first guess.

Know When to Call In Help

Some Challenger lift issues are safe for a shop to diagnose and fix in-house — fluid top-offs, filter changes, tightening fittings, replacing worn pads. Others, particularly anything involving cylinder integrity, structural components, or safety locks, are worth a second set of eyes before the lift goes back into service. We’d rather walk an Iowa shop through a diagnosis over the phone for free than have that shop guess wrong on a safety-critical part.
