Choosing a two post lift is the single decision that shapes how a service bay works for the next twenty years, and most people make it backward — they start with a price, then try to make the building fit the equipment. They’re about a lift that technically works but is wrong for the bay: arms that won’t reach a Silverado’s pinch weld, a carriage that stops six inches short of a transmission job, a column set that eats the walking space a tech needs to swing a door. This guide walks through what we actually check before we quote anything, in the order we check it.

Start With the Building, Not the Brochure
Every good lift decision starts with a tape measure. Measure your ceiling height at the lowest obstruction — not the peak, not the middle of the truss, the lowest thing over the bay. Ductwork, a light fixture, a garage door track in the open position, a sprinkler head. That number sets your ceiling of possibility. A clearfloor two post lift needs an overhead beam, which typically means 12 feet of usable height for a standard-rise model and closer to 14 for a tall-rise. If you’re at 10 feet, you’re looking at a baseplate model where the equalization cables and hoses run across the floor instead of overhead.
Then measure your bay width and depth. Columns need room behind them for the swing of a truck door, and you need aisle space so a tech isn’t squeezing sideways past a column with a caliper in his hands. We generally want at least 12 feet of width per bay, and 14 is better if trucks are in the mix. Depth matters too — a crew cab long bed on a two post lift is a long vehicle, and if the overhead door comes down on the tailgate, nobody’s happy. Write all these numbers down before you look at a single product page. Choosing a two post lift with real measurements in hand takes an afternoon. Capacity: Buy the Headroom You’ll Actually Need
The 10,000 lb two post is the workhorse of the industry and it handles the overwhelming majority of what rolls into a general repair shop. But capacity ratings are about more than gross weight. A 10K lift is engineered around a certain arm geometry and a certain distribution of load across four contact points. Put a dually on it with a service body and a full fuel tank and you’re not just close to the number — you’re loading one end harder than the other.
Our rule of thumb: if more than a quarter of your work is three-quarter-ton and up, go to 12,000 or 15,000 lb. The price gap between a 10K and a 12K is smaller than most people expect, and the columns, arms, and cylinders on the heavier unit simply live longer under the same duty cycle. For fleet shops, ambulance work, or anything with a utility bed, we push toward 15,000 or 18,000 lb every time. Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Arms
This is the detail that separates people who’ve used a lift from people who’ve only read about one. A symmetric two post centers the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms — great weight balance, but the doors open right into the posts. An asymmetric design rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and pairs short front arms with long rear arms, sliding the vehicle back so the driver’s door clears the column.
For a shop where techs are in and out of cabs all day doing diagnostics, asymmetric is worth every penny of the difference. For a shop lifting long trucks and vans where load balance and arm reach matter more than door swing, symmetric often wins. Plenty of modern lifts are versymmetric — the arms and column design let you run either way depending on the vehicle, which is what we recommend for a mixed-work general shop that can’t predict what’s coming through the door next Tuesday. The Slab Under It All
A lift is only as safe as the concrete it’s anchored to. Manufacturer specs for a typical 10,000 lb two post call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many taller or higher-capacity models want more — five or six inches, sometimes with specified reinforcement and a minimum cure age. We core-test when there’s any doubt, and we’ve told plenty of customers in Iowa that their 1960s farm-shop floor needs a poured footing pad before we’ll bolt anything down.
Watch out for control joints, expansion joints, and the edge of the slab. Anchors need a minimum distance from any free edge or crack, and “close enough” isn’t a thing when a truck is eight feet in the air. If you’re building new or repouring, this is the cheapest moment in the whole project to get it right — tell your concrete contractor where the columns are going and pour thickened pads. Choosing a two post lift for a building that doesn’t exist yet is actually the easy version of this problem, because you get to design the floor around the equipment instead of the other way around.
Clearfloor, Baseplate, and What You Trip Over
Clearfloor lifts run the hydraulic hose and equalization cables through an overhead crossbeam, leaving a completely open floor between the columns. That’s the configuration most professional shops want — you can roll a transmission jack anywhere, sweep the bay clean, and drag a floor creeper straight through. The tradeoff is height and the fact that the crossbeam limits how tall a vehicle you can pull in.
Baseplate lifts route everything through a low channel across the floor. They’re the answer for low ceilings and for anyone who needs to lift a tall van or a box truck without hitting an overhead beam. The floor plate is a minor nuisance — it’s a couple inches tall and covered, but you’ll notice it with a creeper. Neither is objectively better; they solve different building problems. Locks, Cables, and Parts You Can Actually Get
Every two post lift has consumables: equalization cables, lock release cables, lock dogs, hydraulic hoses, slider blocks, arm pins, and cylinder seals. Ten years from now, the question that matters isn’t how the lift looked new — it’s whether you can get a cable set in three days or three months. Ask about lock design too. Automatic mechanical locks that engage every few inches, a single-point release you can reach from either column, and a lock ladder you can visually inspect are all worth having. Look at how the carriage rides — bronze or composite slider blocks in a well-machined column channel wear predictably and replace easily. We’ve walked into shops with a no-name import lift where the only path forward was fabricating a part, and that downtime costs more than the whole savings on the original purchase. When choosing a two post lift, parts availability is a spec, not an afterthought.
Installation, Inspection, and Getting It Right the First Time
A two post lift is not a weekend project. It needs a level set, plumb columns, torqued anchors to manufacturer spec, cable tension equalized so both carriages rise together, a properly bled hydraulic system, and a functional load test before a customer’s vehicle goes on it. Certified installation also protects your warranty and gives you the documentation your insurance carrier will eventually ask for.
