The honest answer is that it depends on four things — what you actually do with vehicles, how tall your ceiling is, how thick and healthy your concrete is, and whether the lift needs to hold a car for two hours or two years. Start With the Work, Not the Lift
Before ceiling height, before concrete, before price — tell us what happens to the vehicle once it’s in the air. If your day is brakes, exhaust, suspension, transmissions, and anything that requires the wheels hanging free, a two post is the tool. Nothing beats having all four wheels off and completely unobstructed access to the underside. Techs work faster, tire and wheel work becomes possible, and there’s no runway in the way when you’re dropping a tank or pulling an axle. Every general repair shop we’ve built out in central Iowa runs two posts as their primary bays for exactly this reason.
If your day looks different — alignments, oil changes, exhaust inspections, detail work, or long-term storage of a project car or a collector vehicle — the four post earns its keep. A drive-on lift is faster to load, requires no arm setting, and holds a vehicle by its tires, which means it’s the safer choice for anything parked overnight or for months. We’ve got customers running a hybrid setup: one two post for service, one four post along the wall for storage and alignment. When someone tells us they’ll do a bit of everything, that’s usually where we land. Ceiling Height Is the First Hard Limit
Concrete you can fix. Ceiling height you generally cannot. A standard clearfloor two post wants roughly 12 feet of clear height to raise a truck to full lift and still have the overhead crossbar clear the roof. Baseplate models move the hydraulic line and equalization cables down into a floor plate, which drops the requirement into the 11-foot range and sometimes lower depending on the model. If you’re in a residential garage with a 9-foot ceiling and a garage door track eating into it, you’re not getting full-rise service height out of anything — and that’s the conversation we have on the phone before anyone spends money. Four posts are a bit more forgiving because there’s no overhead structure at all on most models — the crossmembers run underneath the runways. The limit becomes the vehicle plus the runway height plus whatever headroom the tech needs. For storage-focused four posts, you can even go shorter: if the goal is stacking two vehicles in one footprint, you only need enough height for the bottom car plus the top car’s ground clearance. We’ve fit storage four posts into 10-foot ceilings in Ankeny and Ames garages more times than we can count. Measure to the lowest obstruction — door opener, light fixture, truss bottom, HVAC duct — not to the peak.
Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Hear About
A two post transfers the entire vehicle load into two columns and a handful of anchors per baseplate. That’s a lot of concentrated force. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of commercial units want more — five or six inches, cured at least 28 days, with no cracks or expansion joints running through the anchor field. We test slabs on site with a hammer drill and a core check when there’s any doubt, because we’ve seen 1970s farm-shop floors that turned out to be three inches over gravel. If the slab isn’t there, the fix is a cut-and-pour pad, which is a real cost but a one-time one.
Four posts spread the same weight across four columns and, in most cases, don’t require anchoring at all for portable storage use. That’s not a small thing. For a rented building, a garage where you might rearrange later, or a slab you don’t fully trust, a freestanding four post can be the only workable option. We still anchor commercial four posts used for alignment because you need the geometry to stay locked, but the flexibility is real. Capacity, Footprint, and Truck Reality
Iowa is truck country. Half the vehicles that roll into the shops we serve are three-quarter-ton or bigger, and that changes the math. A 10,000 lb two post handles most light-duty work fine, but if you’re regularly putting a loaded dually or a service body in the air, we’re pushing you to 12,000 or 15,000 lb — and asking about arm reach, not just capacity. Asymmetric arm designs let you shift the vehicle back so the doors open past the columns, which matters enormously in a tight bay.
Four posts scale up more comfortably. Runway length is the constraint instead of arm geometry, and longer runways mean crew cab long beds sit stable without any thought. Footprint is the tradeoff: a four post eats floor space whether it’s in use or not, while a two post leaves you a mostly open bay when the arms are swung in. In a two-bay shop, that difference decides layouts. What Choosing Between Two Post and Four Post Lifts Costs You
Sticker price is only part of it. Entry-level four posts in the 8,000 lb home-storage class typically land below a comparable two post because the engineering is simpler and there’s no anchoring labor. Move into commercial territory and the two post is usually the better dollar-per-productive-hour buy, because a tech working on a two post finishes brake jobs faster than one working around runways. Over a year of billable hours, that gap swamps the purchase difference.
Installation cost diverges too. Two post installs mean anchor drilling, torque verification, shimming columns plumb, running the overhead or floor plate, and a full cycle test — figure most of a day for our crew. Four post installs are faster when they’re freestanding, though leveling matters more than people expect on an older slab. Then there’s ongoing service: two posts need cable and equalization checks plus arm restraint inspections; four posts need cable tension and slack-safety checks on all four corners.
