Choosing lift capacity for your shop is the one decision you cannot walk back cheaply. We install and service lifts all over Iowa out of our shop in Ames, and every year we get the same phone call: someone bought a 9,000 lb two-post because it was on sale, and now a three-quarter-ton crew cab with a service body is sitting in the bay and nobody wants to drive it onto the arms. Anchors are set, the concrete is cut, the electrical is run — and the capacity is wrong. Getting this right up front costs nothing but a few honest questions about what actually rolls through your door. Here is how we walk customers through it.

Start With Gross Vehicle Weight, Not Curb Weight

The single most common mistake we see is shopping against curb weight. Curb weight is the vehicle empty — no passengers, no cargo, no ballast, no toolboxes. That number is on a spec sheet somewhere and it looks reassuring. What actually rolls into your bay is a loaded vehicle, and the number that matters is gross vehicle weight rating, the manufacturer’s ceiling for how heavy that truck is allowed to be with everything in it. On a modern half-ton pickup, the gap between curb weight and GVWR is routinely 1,500 to 2,000 lb. On a three-quarter-ton with a utility body, a welder, and a full fuel tank, the gap gets ugly fast.

So when we sit down with a shop owner, we ask for the heaviest vehicle they realistically expect to service, then we use its GVWR — not its brochure weight. From there we look at how that weight lands on the lift. A two-post carries the whole vehicle on four arms, and the load is never split evenly; a front-engine truck can put well over 60 percent of its mass on the front pads. That is why load distribution matters as much as the total number, and why a lift’s front-and-rear rating on the data plate deserves a read. Choosing lift capacity for your shop starts with honest arithmetic about the worst-case vehicle, not the average one.

Build In a Real Safety Margin

A lift rated for 10,000 lb will hold 10,000 lb. That is not the question. The question is whether you want to run your equipment at 98 percent of its rating five times a day for the next fifteen years. We tell customers to plan on a working margin of roughly 20 to 25 percent above their heaviest regular vehicle. If your heaviest routine job is a 8,600 lb loaded three-quarter-ton, a 10,000 lb lift is technically fine and a 12,000 lb lift is the one we would install.

The margin buys you three things. First, it protects the hardware — cables, chains, cylinders, and equalization components all live longer when they are not constantly near their design ceiling, and we replace far fewer cables on lifts that were sized generously. Second, it protects your techs, because a lift running with headroom is a lift that behaves predictably when a vehicle is loaded oddly or an arm is not perfectly centered. Third, it protects your future. Trucks have gained weight in every generation, EVs carry battery packs that add 1,000 to 2,000 lb over comparable gas models, and a lift you buy today should still be right in a decade. When we quote a job, we would rather sell one extra capacity tier than come back in four years to rip out anchors. That is the whole logic behind choosing lift capacity for your shop with margin instead of precision.

The Real-World Capacity Tiers

In practice, capacity choices cluster into a handful of tiers, and knowing them shortcuts a lot of guessing. Nine and ten thousand pounds covers cars, crossovers, minivans, and light half-ton pickups — fine for a tire shop, a quick-lube conversion, or a home garage. Twelve thousand pounds is the workhorse of the independent repair trade: it handles loaded half-tons, three-quarter-tons, most cargo vans, and dually pickups if you spec the right arm configuration and column height. Fifteen and eighteen thousand pounds moves you into one-ton trucks, box vans, ambulances, shuttle buses, and light-medium duty commercial work.

Above that you are in genuine heavy-duty territory — 30,000 lb and up, usually mobile column sets or four-post platforms rather than a single two-post. We stock and install across all of it, and the tier that surprises people most is 12,000. Shops that assume they need 15K often do not, and shops that bought 10K almost always wish they had gone one step up. If most of your work is passenger cars but you take in three or four heavy trucks a week, the honest answer may be two lifts at different ratings instead of one compromise. Capacity Is Not the Only Number on the Data Plate

We have watched shops buy the correct capacity and still end up with the wrong lift, because capacity is only one of four numbers that decide whether a vehicle fits. Rise height determines whether a tech can stand under the vehicle instead of stooping. Drive-thru width between columns determines whether a dually or a wide-body van gets in at all — and on a symmetric two-post, that clearance can be tight enough to matter. Arm reach and minimum pad height determine whether you can reach the lift points on a lowered car and still clear the rocker on a lifted truck.

Then there is your building. Ceiling height caps how tall a column you can stand, especially with an overhead crossbar. Concrete thickness and strength govern anchoring — most commercial two-posts want four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, and heavier ratings want more, sometimes with a poured pad. Bay length and column spacing decide traffic flow. We measure all of it during a site visit because we would rather find a slab problem before the freight ships. Two-Post, Four-Post, or Mobile Columns

Capacity interacts with lift style more than most buyers expect. A two-post at 12,000 lb and a four-post at 12,000 lb are not interchangeable tools. The two-post gives you wheels-free access for brakes, suspension, exhaust, and tires, and it is the right call for the majority of general repair bays. The four-post carries the vehicle on its tires, which makes it superb for alignments, long-term storage, and heavy vehicles that would be awkward on arms — and its rating is often easier to reach in practice because the load sits on runways instead of four pads.

Mobile column sets are the answer when you need serious capacity but flexibility more than a fixed position. Four columns at 18,000 lb each gives you 72,000 lb of total lifting, and you can roll them out of the way when the bay needs to be a bay again. Fleet garages, municipal shops, and bus barns across Iowa run them for exactly that reason. Scissor and mid-rise lifts fill a different niche — fast tire and brake work in a small footprint, usually at lower capacity ratings. Some patterns hold up across our service area.
