Why a Site Survey Comes Before the Order, Not After

We’ve installed plenty of lifts in Iowa garages where the customer bought first and measured second, and it almost always costs more money to fix than it would have to plan ahead. A cl10 challenger lift needs roughly 11 to 12 feet of ceiling height to fully raise a vehicle depending on the column height and extension package you choose, plus another few inches of clearance for the vehicle itself once it’s up on the arms. If your garage has ductwork, a garage door opener rail, or a low truss running through the lift’s footprint, we need to know before the order goes in, not the morning of install.

The other reason we push a survey first is column spacing and door swing. A two-post lift needs enough width between the columns for your widest vehicle’s doors to open, and it needs enough depth in the bay for the arms to swing under the pinch points without the columns landing on a floor drain or expansion joint. When a customer in the Urbandale area calls us, we ask for photos, a tape measure reading on ceiling height at the exact install spot, and the garage door track height, before we ever quote equipment. That fifteen-minute phone call saves weeks of back-and-forth once concrete is already involved.

Slab Thickness and Concrete Condition

Most residential garages in central Iowa are poured at 4 inches, which is on the thin side for a full-rise lift rated for transmission and differential work. We typically want to see 4.5 inches minimum, with no visible cracking radiating through the anchor pattern, and a cure date old enough that the concrete has reached full strength — 28 days minimum, though older is better.

If your slab is original to a house built decades ago, there’s a real chance it’s thinner than code calls for today, or it’s got a rebar mat that’s too shallow to give anchors a bite. We check this on-site with a core sample or at minimum a visual inspection and a strength estimate before we bolt anything down. If your slab doesn’t pass, the fix is usually a 4×4 or 6×6 foot concrete pad poured specifically for the columns, not a full driveway tear-out. Better to find that out during the site survey than after the lift is sitting in your garage in boxes.

Power Requirements for the Hydraulic Unit

The cl10 challenger lift runs on a single-phase electric motor driving the hydraulic pump, and most residential garages already have the amperage available, but the outlet location matters more than people expect. We want a dedicated 220V circuit within reasonable cord length of where the power unit will sit, ideally on the same side as the columns so the hose routing is clean and doesn’t cross a walking path. Running an extension cord to a lift motor is a fire risk we won’t sign off on.

If your garage is only wired for 110V outlets, that’s not a dealbreaker, but it does mean an electrician needs to run a new circuit before install day, and that’s a cost and schedule item you want to know about weeks in advance, not the morning our install crew shows up. We’ve had jobs in the Urbandale and greater Des Moines area delayed a full week because the electrical work wasn’t scheduled ahead of the lift delivery. Get a licensed electrician out to look at your panel and confirm available capacity as part of your pre-purchase checklist, right alongside the ceiling height and slab measurements.

One thing that trips up first-time buyers is assuming every cl10 challenger lift comes in one configuration. It doesn’t. You can spec base column height or add two-foot, four-foot, or even six-foot extensions depending on your ceiling clearance and how tall you want the lift to run vehicles for underbody work. A weekend mechanic doing transmission and differential service on trucks and SUVs benefits from extra height; someone working mostly on sedans doesn’t need it and shouldn’t pay for it.

Order too much height and you’ll clip your garage door track or ceiling joists. Order too little and you’ll be stooping under the vehicle for oil changes and transmission drops for years. Arm Configuration for Transmission and Differential Work

Since you’re planning transmission and differential service specifically, arm reach and pad placement matter more than they would for a general-purpose lift. The cl10 challenger lift uses asymmetric or symmetric arm configurations depending on the model variant, and for drivetrain work you want enough arm reach and swing to get the vehicle centered with clear access underneath for a transmission jack to roll in. Cramped arm clearance turns a routine fluid service into a wrestling match.

We also recommend factoring in a transmission jack’s footprint and height when you’re planning your garage layout, not just the lift’s footprint. A lift raised to a comfortable working height for drivetrain removal needs floor space around it for the jack to maneuver, plus clearance to walk the transmission out to a bench or dolly. This is exactly the kind of detail that gets missed when people buy a lift based on price alone without picturing the actual job they’ll be doing on it every weekend.

Delivery Access and Assembly Logistics

A two-post lift arrives as a genuinely heavy shipment — columns, a power unit, arms, and hardware crated and palletized, often north of a couple thousand pounds total. Getting it off a truck and into your garage requires either a loading dock, a forklift, or a liftgate truck and a pallet jack, and your driveway and garage door width need to accommodate that path. We coordinate delivery logistics as part of every install we schedule in the Urbandale area, but it’s worth walking your own driveway grade and garage door clearance before you commit to a delivery date.

Assembly itself is not a bolt-together job we’d recommend DIYing unless you’ve done it before. Column plumb, anchor torque, cable or chain synchronization between the two columns, and hydraulic bleed procedures all affect how safely the lift operates once it’s holding a vehicle over your head. We install these professionally as standard practice, and we’d encourage you to budget for professional install rather than trying to save money on that step specifically.
