Classic car lift pad placement is not something you can eyeball the way you might on a late-model unibody sedan. Old muscle cars, trucks, and pre-war frames were built differently than anything rolling off a modern assembly line, and if you set the pads in the wrong spot you risk a dented rocker, a bent floor pan, or worse, a car that shifts and falls off the arms mid-lift. Why Classic Frames Need Different Pad Points

Modern unibody cars have factory-marked pinch welds a lift arm can hook right up to, but a lot of classics were built on full frames, partial frames, or unibody structures with reinforcement in places you wouldn’t expect. That means classic car lift pad placement has to start with identifying whether you’re dealing with a body-on-frame car, a unibody, or something in between, because the safe contact points move depending on the answer. A 1967 Camaro is not built like a 1957 Chevy, and neither is built like a modern Mustang.

On full-frame classics, the pads generally go on the frame rails themselves, at reinforced sections near the factory jack points if the car still has them. On unibody classics, you’re hunting for the pinch welds along the rocker, but many of those cars have thinner, more rust-prone sheet metal than what you find on newer vehicles, so even a correctly located pad can crush metal that’s already weakened. We always tell owners to physically inspect the metal at the contact point before trusting it, tapping it and looking for flex or rust-through, because classic car lift pad placement is only half the equation. The other half is metal condition.

Frame Contact Points on Body-On-Frame Classics

For true body-on-frame classics, the safest approach is contacting the frame rail directly rather than the body. Look for the factory jack point notches, often near the front and rear leaf spring perches or just behind the front wheels and just ahead of the rear axle, since those areas were engineered to carry concentrated load. These points are consistent across a lot of American classics from the 1950s through the 1970s, though exact locations shift by model year and body style.

Avoid setting pads on floor pans, rocker panels, or exhaust crossmembers on these cars even though it might look tempting when the frame is hard to reach. Floor pans on classics are rarely built to carry the full weight of the car, and a lot of them have patch panels or filler from past repairs that won’t hold. We also recommend tall rubber pad blocks or wood cribbing on older frames so the contact surface is wider and the load isn’t concentrated on one small square of rusty metal. Getting this step right is the difference between a smooth service lift and a shop-floor disaster.

Pinch Weld Points on Classic Unibody Cars

Classic unibody cars, especially imports and some domestic compacts from the 1960s and 1970s, rely on pinch welds along the rocker panel similar to what you’d find on a modern car, but the metal gauge is usually thinner and more prone to rust. Correct classic car lift pad placement on these cars means finding the reinforced seam right behind the front wheel well and just ahead of the rear wheel well, then using a wide rubber pad adapter to spread the load rather than concentrating it on a narrow lip.

Because rust is such a common issue on cars this old, we tell owners to check both sides of the panel, inside and out, before trusting a pinch weld with the vehicle’s full weight. If there’s any doubt, it’s worth getting the car up on jack stands first at a lower height to visually confirm the seam isn’t crumbling under light pressure. Once you know the seam is solid, a set of adjustable arms with the correct pad height gets you a stable, repeatable lift point every time you bring the car in for service.

Using Adapters and Cribbing for Extra Protection

Standard rubber lift pads are designed for the ground clearance and contact geometry of modern vehicles, and they often don’t sit right under a lowered classic or a truck with a raised suspension. Tall rubber adapter blocks, sometimes called pucks or extensions, close that gap and let you reach the correct frame or pinch weld point without the arm itself colliding with ground effects, exhaust, or suspension components. This is one of the most overlooked parts of classic car lift pad placement, and it’s an easy fix once you know it’s an option.

Wood cribbing is another old-school trick that still works well for wide, flat frame sections that don’t have a factory notch to grab. A properly sized wood block spreads the load across more surface area, reducing the chance of denting or crushing thin metal. Common Mistakes That Damage Vintage Bodies

The most common mistake we see is rushing the setup and placing pads by feel instead of checking a reference point first. Another frequent issue is using standard-height pads on a lowered or modified classic, which forces the arm into an awkward angle and puts uneven pressure on one corner of the contact point instead of spreading the load evenly across all four pads.

We also see owners trust old restoration work without inspecting it first. A rocker panel that looks solid under fresh paint can be hiding thin patch metal or filler that won’t support real weight. Before every lift, walk around the car, tap the contact areas, and look underneath with a flashlight if you have any doubt at all. It takes two extra minutes and it can save you from a repair bill that dwarfs whatever you were bringing the car in for in the first place.

Two-Post vs Four-Post for Classic Cars

Two-post lifts give you full underside access for suspension and exhaust work, but they demand more precision because the car’s entire weight rests on four small contact points. Four-post lifts, by contrast, drive the car up onto runways, distributing weight across the tires rather than the frame or rockers, which makes them a lower-risk option for owners who mainly need to store or move a classic rather than perform underbody service. For long-term storage of a valuable classic, a lot of collectors prefer four-post lifts specifically because it removes the pad placement question almost entirely.

That said, two-post lifts remain the better choice for actual mechanical work because they leave the underside completely open. If you’re doing brake jobs, exhaust work, or suspension rebuilds on a classic, a two-post with correctly located adapters and cribbing is still the right tool, you just need to be more deliberate about setup.
