A good collector garage lift layout is the difference between a garage that feels like a showroom and one where you’re constantly bumping mirrors and shins trying to squeeze between cars. We’ve installed lifts in a lot of Iowa garages built specifically to house a growing collection — everything from a two-car pole barn with a single lift to a six-bay heated shop with a mix of two-post, four-post, and storage lifts stacked to the ceiling. Start With Ceiling Height Before Anything Else

Every collector garage lift layout we’ve ever designed starts with a tape measure pointed straight up, not a floor plan. Ceiling height decides whether a four-post storage lift or a stacked two-post arrangement is even possible, and it decides how tall a vehicle you can park on the second level. We’ve walked into Iowa garages with 14-foot ceilings that felt generous until someone wanted to store a raised truck on top, and the math suddenly got tight. Get an accurate measurement to the lowest point — not just the trusses, but any ductwork, lighting, or door tracks that hang down — before you commit to a lift model.

Four-post lifts are simpler to load — just drive on — and many collectors use them purely for storage, stacking a daily driver underneath a project car that rarely moves. If your collection is mostly cars you tinker with, lean two-post. If it’s mostly cars you look at and rotate occasionally, four-post storage lifts usually win.

We often end up recommending a blend for larger Iowa collections: two-post Rotary lifts in the working bays where wrenches actually come out, and BendPak or Atlas four-post storage lifts along the back wall or a mezzanine level for cars that are mostly parked. This mixed approach in a collector garage lift layout gives you flexibility — you can rotate a car down from storage into a working bay without ever having to move three other vehicles out of the way first.

Column spacing is where a lot of DIY layouts go wrong. Concrete, Anchoring, and Floor Load Considerations

No collector garage lift layout survives contact with reality if the slab underneath it can’t handle the load. Traffic Flow and Working Clearance Between Bays

A collector garage lift layout has to work for people, not just cars. We ask owners to think through how they’ll actually move around the space: rolling a tool cart between bays, opening a trunk without hitting a post, walking a fender out for paint without clipping another vehicle’s mirror. It’s easy to fit the vehicles on paper and forget that a human with a floor jack also needs to exist in that space.

We recommend leaving a dedicated walkway of at least 3 feet along at least one full side of every lift, more if that bay doubles as a detailing or inspection area. In larger collections, a central aisle wide enough for a car to pass through while others sit lifted is worth the floor space it costs — it turns a static storage layout into one you can actually rotate cars through without a three-hour shuffle.

Power, Lighting, and Air Line Placement

Utility planning gets bolted onto a collector garage lift layout as an afterthought more often than it should. Hydraulic lifts need dedicated electrical circuits, and depending on the model, that can mean 220V drops at specific column locations. If you plan your electrical rough-in before the lifts arrive, you save yourself from running conduit across a finished floor later. We always ask for the lift spec sheets early enough to hand off exact amperage and location needs to an electrician before drywall goes up.

Lighting matters just as much in a collector garage. Overhead lift arms and stacked vehicles create shadows that a single centered fixture won’t reach. We suggest planning light placement around where the lift columns and raised vehicles will actually sit, not just evenly across the ceiling grid, so you’re not working under a raised chassis in the dark. Air line drops for impact guns and paint work should follow the same logic — plan them around the finished collector garage lift layout, not the empty slab.

Planning for Future Growth in the Layout
